Eyes that Speak is a revealing, behind-the-scenes, through-the-lens perspective on some of the famous eyes that have "spoken" to the world. While having the honor of capturing amazing moments and events in history during the course of a thirty-year photographic career, photo-journalist Christy Bowe has always learned something from each of her subjects. The power of the camera has transported her to places and exposed her to situations that most people only read about.
In an intimate and personal journey that spans photographing subjects from a declared terrorist to Queen Elizabeth II, separated by only a few yards and security personnel, this book captures those moments when a subject's eyes speak to the world through photographic images. Eyes That Speak is a compelling, pictorial look into the work of a Washington-based photojournalist as she shares life lessons gained while capturing some of the most significant moments in history.
Christy Bowe is a White House photographer, and she features her work in Eyes that Speak.
I LOVE photography, and even more, I love photojournalism involving historical events and backdrops. Christy Bowe has now photographed five US presidents. As if that wasn’t enough, she’s accomplished so much more, and Eyes that Speak is a fascinating glimpse into her life’s work.
The old cliche about envisioning people’s souls through their eyes feels authentic here with this book. Through only this lens, you can feel emotions, determination, wisdom, heart, beauty, uncertainty, sacrifice.
I’ve reviewed several photojournalistic books the last few years, and this one is most definitely a standout and one I will cherish. It simply has to be experienced, and my words are inadequate.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words; well the photographs that photojournalist Christy Bowe has captured speak volumes!

Eyes That Speak is a spectacular journey through Christy Bowe's career as a photojournalist. Mentored by the late Sarah McClendon, Christy started ImageCatcher News Service and has earned her place in the elite circle of the White House Press photographers. Her pictures have been featured in magazines, preserved in the George W. Bush Presidential Library, and have even won the 2021 Paris Photo Prize for her pictures of the January 6 insurrection.
What a wonderful and comprehensive collection of the past thirty years of history! I was absolutely amazed going through this significant book and reading all the behind the scenes of each and every one of these pictures. In the hypercompetitive journalistic world, Christy shares with her readers her passion, insight, and her ability to "know when to flash it and when to stash it."
Christy has photographed five presidential terms from Bill Clinton to Joe Biden and has captured so many incredible moments of history in between. Some highlights include coverage at the Pentagon after the 9.11 attack, the funeral of former President Ronal Regan, former President Barack Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the sad passing of Ruth Bader Ginsberg, three Impeachment trials, and the January 6 insurrection.
What makes Eyes That Speak so remarkable is not only Christy's persistence and vigilance to find the perfect photo opportunity, but of her insight and compassion in sharing the stories behind her incredible photographs. From sharing a Namaste moment with the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, shaking Nelson Mandela's hand, earning a wink from George W. Bush, to holding Mother Theresa's hands, Christy shares with her readers the humanity and beauty behind the scenes.
What an incredible documentation of a full and successful career by a dedicated and talented female photojournalist!
I think that all of us can appreciate a meaningful picture and acknowledge the effort that goes into taking a picture that will portray the meaning of the book or event we want to share with our audience.
So, for all of you that love photos and all those that want to know what goes on in the trenches for a photojournalist in Washington, D.C., this will be a book that you will enjoy and re-immerse yourself in for countless hours.
Christy Bowe is a White House photographer and has been covering presidents since Bill Clinton. In this beautiful coffee table book (or I am keeping it on my coffee table), Christy uses her photographs as well as her written experiences to portray the events and people that she has covered while in Washington, D.C.
It’s hard to tell if my favorite part of this book is the photos themselves or Christy’s writing about the events and people. I think the combination of both is a perfect balance.
I also wanted to share one of my favorite chapters, but again, each event and the accompanying photos are interesting and unique so it’s hard to choose.
This is a great gift or beautiful and decorative book that is also a joy to read.
Christy Bowe has been a photojournalist on the Washington beat for the last 30 years! She gained her up-close access to the last 5 presidents with the assistance of non other than the late Sarah McClendon.
The author tells behind-the-scenes stories and gives the reader an up-close view of the presidents and various influential guests of the White House since the Clinton administration. She shares photos of inaugurations, quiet first family moments, behind the scenes meetings, state visits, celebrity visits, and more! My entire family enjoyed looking through this book and reading the stories.
This would make an excellent gift or coffee table book. It is bound to start conversations. If you enjoy reading short, interesting stories about the presidents and other influential people, this book is for you!
My sincere thanks to the author, @christy.bowe.1 and @suzyapprovedbooktours for my gifted copy of this wonderful book. My thoughts are my own.
