This book incorporates all of the text and most of the illustrations from "The Building of the Castillo de San Marcos" by Luis Arana and Albert Manucy, published by Eastern National in 1977. We have enlarged the format, used larger type, added historical maps, historical photographs, modern color photographs, and some additional text.
My husband and I visited St Augustine in 2022. We knew nearly nothing about the fort, so my reading this booklet aloud post-visit benefitted us both. I was impressed with all the research that went into writing this. It's pretty intense, with lots of dates and names and architectural terms. Worth reading if you're interested in Spanish/Floridian history.
When I visited St. Augustine, Florida, I knew it claimed to be the oldest city in the USA but I didn’t know the history behind it, so I bought this book. The book explores the historical events surrounding and the building of the Castillo de San Marcos, the fort built to defend the city that you can visit today. Although I learned a few things, the book was not very engaging.
Good read with great pictures and diagrams. It is odd that none of these show direction (North, South...) and I think that even the author became confused at one point.
A very interesting & informative book on the Castillo de San Marcos. Enjoyed seeing the fort when I was in St. Augustine & the book added to my enjoyment. Glad I read it.
