Juniper Unraveling #2

Calico Descending

Rate this book
In a world of suffering and brutality, she's the key to his humanity ...

I was fourteen when I was sold to the men in black uniforms. Too young to understand I served a purpose beyond that of the other girls they’d taken.

For the greater good.

Now, after four years in Calico, I’ve seen more death and suffering than during my days of surviving out in the Deadlands against the threat of Ragers and famine. I didn’t think this world could get any bleaker. Didn’t think it could take any more from me than it already had.

Not until I finally learned my purpose.

That same day, I walked the dark halls in the bowels of this hell, where the suffering is in silence, and ghosts of the dead whisper through the walls. A place where nightmares are real.

A place where I met my Champion—the most revered Alpha in S-Block—locked away in his dark cell.

For the greater good.

He’s their weapon, their only line of defense against the mistakes of the past: the mutations that could wipe out all of what’s left of us.

Me, I’m his whipping girl. His reward for good behavior.
And his punishment for acts of defiance.

Calico Descending is the follow up book to Juniper Unraveling, a full-length dystopian post apocalyptic romance.

He is pain and agony wrapped in fire, but his lips are sheer bliss.
He’s the flame that burns inside of me, the single spark that ignites my soul.

I simply cannot describe to you the sheer brilliance that is this book. It's not your run of the mill romance, it's so much beyond that. It's a gripping and vivid tale of pain and survival in a brutal world the likes of which only the evil genius mind of Keri Lake can create. Think Resident Evil meets romance.

Keri Lake created a dangerous, violent and desolate world that's so vivid, the entire book is like a movie reel unfolding behind your eyes. I thought I loved Juniper Unraveling but Calico Descending absolutely blew me away. The romance that blossoms in the very pits of hell is one of the most stunning stories I've read to date. It was torturously beautiful and heart breakingly emotional. Even if you've never read Dystopian Romance before, Calico Descending will make a new fan out of you. It's an absolute must read.

If you've read Juniper, then you've already been introduced to this dark and evil world that shows the worst of human ambition, survival and depravity. And if you didn't, I'm not sure what you're waiting for. But also, you wouldn't be entirely lost starting with this book. The timeline of the books runs parallel. But where Juniper shows the world outside of Calico, this takes you into the very pits of its darkness.

We get introduced to Cali, a woman that's been surviving her situation day by day while enduring one terrifying experience after another. Then you also get taken deep into the heart of the Alpha project and meet Valdys, Cadmus and Titus. I don't want to tell you too much about this story, but prepare yourself for a gut wrenching read. Much like Juniper, this starts as an ember and soon ignites to a fiery conclusion. It's a slow building, character driven story with plenty of action and a sizzling romance to boot. It was everything I could have hoped from a sequel to one of my all time favorite books and so SO much more!

**** 4.5 Stars!!!!****

I love a dark, gruesome dystopian story, and the second book in this series delivered plenty of gore and despair. If you are looking for a flowery romance, you will not find it here. There is love that develops during the pain, devastation, and torture that our beloved characters endure. The thing is though, this story isn’t pretty and it turned my stomach more than once... but that made the glimpse of passion and love even more cherished when I finally got to witness it happen between Cali and Valdys.

I would love to go into all the details that make up this horrific world; but it is one of those books that you need to experience without spoilers. I will mention that this is not a standalone... you must read the first book as there is a huge amount of history and information that you would miss out on if you didn’t. My reason for docking is Half a star was that I found it a bit slow in the first half. Even in saying that, I was hooked from the get go!

Now I have to wait for the conclusion which comes out in December! I can’t wait!!! This is a series I won’t ever forget!

Wow!!! mind blown completely if the first book managed to completely bowl me over this one blew me away with its sheer brilliance.
Calico Descending is book two in the series and it can technically be read as a stand-alone read as though it is set in the same world as its predecessor it involves a completely different set of characters, Saying that this series is just so good you most definitely want to read them all.
This is book one in a two-parter, I believe this concludes in December and I for one can't wait for the conclusion here it was that good.

Genre-wise this is a dark dystopian romance set in a post-apocalyptic future and it doesn't pull its punches one little bit.
This was every bit as horrific as its predecessor with wicked and cruel intent throughout.
The cruelty and total depravity visited on these young adults and children completely shocking to experience, where humanity has evolved to the point it is devoid of all ethical morality and the lack of conscience observed here simply unimaginable.

This story is told in two separate time-frames the then and the now of four years later.
After the raid on her hive by Ragers and the death of her mother Fourteen-year-old Calithea along with her ten-year-old sister Bryani are left to fend for themselves until they are both tricked and captured and taken to the medical facility at Calico for processing.
This is the beginning of Cali's story, placed in the Alpha program Cali is assigned to a champion (Valdys).
Her only function now a potential tool to control a powerful weapon, one who will do what he must to protect her from danger.

This wasn't always easy reading with its dark themes but I was so emotionally invested in these tragically complex characters.
Imaginative and so original this story dug in its claws and infected me, it was one hell of an emotional rollercoaster and it deserves every one of its five-stars, I highly recommend this it was just so bloody amazing.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of Calico Descending (Juniper Unraveling, #2).

Honestly, I wasn't going to read this book. I was pretty satisfied with the happy for now ending I got for Wren and Six and when I found out this book wasn't even about them, I didn't see the point. But then I realized that I wasn't quite done learning about this messed up world that Keri Lake created. For a woman who avoids everything remotely scary, for some reason, I can't look away from this series. I'm truly hooked and so I took the dive back in and learned what I could about these new characters. Valdys, Camdus and Titus didn't disappoint!

☠️ Calico is no Wonderland. It's a place full of corrupt and immoral people doing evil things to their own kind
☠️ more twisted and disgusting experiments
☠️ I got to know more about the Alpha program. For every scar that marked their bodies, I thought of all that Six had to live through
☠️ I couldn't get enough of Valdys and would have given my left boob (the largest) to get his perspective in this story

I didn't like Cali. She didn't endear herself to me and although I was sympathetic to her losses and to her abuse, it wasn't enough to make me care about her. The fact that she was the narrator and I was still able to love this story is a testament to this author's talent. It didn't hurt that the men of her creation were so intriguing!

So much didn't happen for a lot of this book and yet so much did happen. The connections that grew between these characters was almost tangible, I'm not a fan of the convenient plot device introduced (estrous) because it took away rather than added to the strength of this story, but it wasn't enough to make me turn away. I also didn't like that Cali was THE ONE for everyone. Really? And from what I've gathered from the reviews for Kings of Carrion, which I do intend to read, it only gets worse. Please, please, somebody please tell me that it gets better. I don't want to dislike Cali anymore than I already do.

Genre:  Romance Dystopian
Type:  Book 2 of 4 from Juniper Unraveling series
POV:  First Person – Female

"Paradise is an illusion in our world, a mirage, one in which only fools and the truly delirious trust."

Calico Descending takes place in the Juniper Unraveling world; we meet Calithea who at only fourteen years old has seen death and nothing really surprises her.  When she lost her mother she knew she had to be strong for her and her younger sister if they wanted to survive the disease.

"I wish I could be that innocent.  So young and naive.  Blind to the dangers I can see through this false shroud.  What bliss it would be to pretend that this is the kind of place where friends are made and life is better than outside the walls."

Calithea and her sister get abducted and taken to the clinic who was responsible for the disease in the first place.  They had no choice but to do what they were told if they wanted to survive.   At first they didn't thought it was too bad until much later Calithea realize all the madness she was being part of.

"We're savages to them.  Animals, basically.  The experiments they perform on me, in their eyes, are no different than them being performed on a rodent who happens to talk."

We meet three alpha males in this story which was part of the experiments in the clinic and I honestly was conflicted choosing a favorite alpha, I wanted all three haha.  Obviously I preferred one but the other ones were just so broken I couldn't helped feeling for them.  The author gives us a very detailed and vivid story of everything that went inside the clinic and the experiments which made the story interesting.

"Time is the thief who comes in the night, silently chipping away a the present.  And love is the killer of hearts."

Overall, this book was so good and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I loved the world where the story takes place, reading the story from the inside of the clinic makes this book more realistic and interesting to me.  Readers looking for a dystopian story will find this book appealing.

Genre: Dystopian Romance
Type: Book 1 of 3 from Juniper Unraveling series
POV: First Person - Female
Rating:

All her life, Calithea only knew a world where everything was volatile. Being a subject in the Alpha project at Calico means a minor privilege but still won’t save her from Valdys, one of the most dangerous Alphas in the facility. With his questionable humanity, she must find a way to survive or become just another casualty of the broken world they lived in.

I read Juniper Unraveling (book 1) a long time ago and it was good going back into the world. This time around, the story focused on the people from the other side.

“He won’t become attached. Why would he? You’ve destroyed him! You’ve destroyed whatever small bit of humanity was left in him!”

Calithea and Valdys were both victims of power and desperation. I sympathized with both of them with what they had been subjected to. I liked him but I wanted to know more of his background to feel more for him and the connections between them as a couple.

I won’t stand by and let this place destroy him. This is my silent vow, a promise I will keep to myself. No matter the cost, I won’t let them hurt Valdys.

What I loved the most about this book was the world they lived in. I enjoyed all those experiments and the humanity factors of the story. That’s why Cadmus is my favorite character in this book. I also loved how the author didn’t hold any punches in portraying the dark and violent nature of their living situation.

Calico Descending examines the characters’ defiance and the will to survive. It would appeal to readers who enjoy a dark dystopian romance.

Set in the same dystopian world in Juniper Unraveling, the storyline continues a few years later where hives are still being raided and the unsuspecting are introduced to a tortuous life at Calico Hospital, all to find a cure against the Dredge contagion. At 14 years old, Calithea is captured and learns her new role at Calico. As years pass, she endures painful experiments, but she makes a connection with her Champion, Valdys.

“He is pain and agony wrapped in fire, but his hands and lips are sheer bliss. I won't stand by and let this place destroy him. This is my silent vow, a promise I will keep to myself.”

As the timeline shifts between past and present, the narrative builds with Calithea’s immersion to a more realistic view of the hopelessness she is facing. However, with knowledge, the idea of taking a great risk comes to the surface. Together, Cali and Valdys fight for their freedom knowing there can be deadly consequences.

“I can see why you were so cruel.” My lips twitch with a tearful smile, as it occurs to me, staring down at his gaping lips and shocked expression, how one can take pleasure from watching another suffer.”

What I enjoyed most about this plot is the overarching theme of inhumanity versus compassion and how those who are corrupt also have much to lose. The circumstances of the Alphas is quite intriguing. I liked their camaraderie but also wanted more background about them.

Calico Descending is a dystopian romance with gripping action that pushes boundaries of physical and mental challenges. I look forward to reading the next book, in this series.

EXCERPT

A hard thumping sound startles my muscles, and nearly dropping the tray, I snap my head to the right, to see dust falling from the ceiling in front of one of the many thick, iron doors that line each side of the corridor. A second thump from the left swings my attention to another door across from the first.

“W-What is that?” I ask, curling my fingers tight around the tray handles.

“Alphas.” Medusa’s flat and cold voice only adds to the fear snaking through my bones. “They smell you. Keep moving.”

Yet another shove from behind kicks me forward, and I swear, if I don’t drop these dishes before I get there, it’ll be the only miracle I’ve witnessed in this place.

Each door we pass thumps and rattles, as if whatever is on the other side might plow through it, all the way until we reach one of three doors on the end.

Medusa steps between me and a keypad on the wall, and above that, the outline of a hand. “Don’t make eye contact. Don’t talk too much. Don’t cry. Don’t laugh. Don’t make any loud noises. If he approaches you, don’t move. Attempt to fight, or engage him, and you’ll die. Down here, he’s known as Valdys, but don’t call him by name. Ever.” She draws a breath and exhales through her nose, her eyes more stern than ever. “And under no circumstances should you touch him.”

Calico Descending is the second book in the Juniper Unraveling Series. As always, Keri Lake has delivered a captivating story full of passion, intrigue, and non-stop action! Calithea, our heroine, has witnessed terrors and heartbreak her entire life. Held captive by the clinic where the search for the cure continues, Calithea is introduced to three powerful Alphas. Valdys, a powerful Alpha, and Calithea are drawn to each other and even through the disfunction and twisted world in which they live, somehow, they find solace in each other.

"No matter the cost. No one will hurt you."
Told in Calithea's POV, Calico Descending offers a magical dystopian romance with complex characters living in a treacherous world. The dynamics between the characters are extreme as the stakes are high for them to survive. The writing is colorful and will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire read.

"He's the flame that burns inside of me, the single spark that ignites my soul."
Overall, I simply cannot get enough of Keri Lake's writing and I simply CANNOT WAIT for the next book in the series to be released! If you are a dystopian fan, you will enjoy every moment spent in this magical world!

RATING: 4.5 'My Alpha' HEARTS!

Calico Descending is—in true Keri Lake fashion—dark, heartbreaking, and a journey of trials and tribulations for its characters, yet it is also full of beautiful hope that blossoms into a semaphore of love flourishing in spite of a cruel world.

“He’s the flame that burns inside of me, the single spark that ignites my soul.”

Both Cali and Valdys are exemplar of human nature, two souls who come together in a time of loss, pain and turmoil to present an inspiringly united front against those determined to knock them down. And, this is why Ms. Lake’s writing is provocative and tremendously brilliant—she has the ability to craft an intricate relationship between reader and characters despite their fictional proclivity. While Cali and Valdys’ eventual culmination has a sense of urgency and foreboding from its origin, we can’t help but be completely consumed by their love and passion, and root for their happily-ever-after.

“..[T]ime and love are criminals who spare no one--not even the most desiring.”

Overall, Calico Descending is riveting, intense and sexy, leaving us at a precarious cliffhanger, yet also instilling in us the utmost belief that Ms. Lake has an exhilarating conclusion in wait for our beloved characters, and I am thoroughly looking forward to that apogee in the next book.

- 4.5 stars -

Calico Descending is the sequel to one of my favorite reads of 2017: Juniper Unraveling. That stand-alone didn’t feel completely finished so I’m happy that Keri decided to dive into this dark dystopian/post-apocalyptic world again. Keri doesn't hold back and really does a phenomenal job in creating another dark and gritty story. I love that it is unpredictable and really anything can happen at any time. Like the previous book this one had me in tears a couple of times. The author really takes risks and I think they paid off. This book focuses on a different set of characters, mainly Calithea, and the story is told from her POV. I loved the flashbacks that were included because it gave us her background information, and showed her character development. She already has gone through a lot and life is continuing to give her a very difficult time. When she is given to the Alpha Valdys, she doesn't know what to expect. However, over time she understands that like her he doesn't have a choice in the things that have been done to him or the things that he has to do to stay alive. She feels a connection to him and this grows stronger over time. Eventually they know that they need to escape the facility if they want to stay alive. However, it is easier said than done.

"No matter the cost, I won't let them hurt Valdys. I can't He's the flame that burns inside of me, the single spark that ignites my soul."

This is a very strong and great sequel to Juniper Unraveling and I loved being back in the world Keri Lake has created. It sometimes is very difficult to read some scenes, but it also add to the atmosphere of a dystopian world. I was wishing for more scenes between Calithea and Valdys, however there is a sequel to their story, so I am hoping that we will get more of that in the next book. I also loved the two other Alphas Titus and Cadmus, I am especially intrigued by Cadmus who is a bit of an anti-hero with a lot of trauma. I really enjoyed learning more about the world and what is going on at the research facility. I am expecting even more action in the next book, and I am ready for it. I really look forward to what will happen in the next book, and how the characters will grow even more. This book like the previous one is very though-out and creativity of the author is amazing. The dystopian/post-apocalyptic dark romance genre is one of my favorites and unfortunately there aren't many books in this particular subgenre.

It’s a wonder we fall in love, at all. Sometimes, I think we’re all just innately drawn to heartache. Why else would we dare to fall so deeply, knowing what consequences may lie ahead?
This was darker and gorier than the previous one.

3.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Back at Calico, we get to learn about the things that happen there from the inside. Cali is in the Alpha program. She has been experimented on for 4 years in order to make her prime and to bind her to 3 Aplhas: Valdys, Titus and Cadmus. She chooses Valdys. They fell in love despite all the terror and pain around them. They found solace in eachother in a very dark place.

Did I loved this one as much as the first book? well no. I didn't believe in this couple as much as I did with Wren and Six. Maybe it was because this one took a turn towards omegaverse in my perspective. With all the estrus and the smell and the binding. I love omegaverse but I felt like the author tried to mashup this 2 genres too hard. I wanted the vibe from the first book. Now, I m not saying this was bad, just less. Also, Cadmus and Titus. I know now that Titus will have his hea, but Cadmus seems to have a very strong connection with Cali which was a bit awkward at times considering this is not mfm. Cali made some pretty dumb decisions in my opinion, and I really don't get why all of them followed her blindly like she had all the fucking answers and the sun in her hands. I think Valdys should have taken the major decisions, or any of the other alphas.

They go thru alot during this book and I have to read the next one to find out how it ends for them. Apparently the action in this book went in parallel with the first book , concluding with the happy ending for some and despair but also hope for others.

Re-read 8th - 9th October 2020.

Juniper Unraveling was an amazing and unforgettable book. Despite taking me well outside my comfort zone I found I loved it.

This book is more of the same. Yes it’s dark and disturbing. And once again my comfort zone was a mere speck in my rear view mirror. But I couldn’t get enough.

Calithea and her sister Bryani are captured and taken to Calico. In Juniper (which definitely has to be read first) only boys were taken. All girls were killed. This always seemed an incredibly shortsighted strategy. Now however they practice a more equal opportunity kidnapping.

Life inside Calico is hell. The monsters here rival any found in the world outside. They just hide it better.

This is a world decimated by the Dredge. A virus or prion designed to spread. And spread it did annihilating over half the population. The “zombies” here are Ragers.

Calithea is experimented on. She’s put into something they call their Alpha programme.

It’s straight onto Kings of Carrion now.

Calico Descending takes us once again into a dark, depressing and dangerous world. Those in charge are experimenting with human lives and I find myself thinking yet again that death is the route I would rather travel but then Keri shows us a small flicker of life and I think that's why humans have the instinct to live. The ending broke my heart but the wait is short and the conclusion Kings of Carrion will be released soon.

3 stars. The author is to be commended for the world building but I felt there were a couple of things kept this from being… believable? It’s a dark and horrible world but the first book was more compelling to me due to a bit of “mystery” about Dani/Wren. And Six was a great character, swoony. Even if Wren felt compelled to save Six after 3 meetings, if didn’t feel as “Insta” to me.

This story is set in the same world and runs parallel to the first story but somehow doesn’t deliver. It felt hard to follow when the story kept switching between 4 years past and then present. Also, it felt like Cali fell for her “Champion” too fast. I know she was genetically altered to want him but to break him out of the facility after only a short time felt - contrived?

And damn if this monster wasn’t a considerate lover! What?!? Brutal was expected. And for them to both have such deep love and devotion to each other so fast, again- not as believable.

And when they escape- soft spoiler, sorry- the marauders that capture them- it was all nasty and depressing. I really lost and desire to continue the series after they escape, find a magical hidden waterfall that no one knows about and then are captured again?

And to be “binded” (her words) to all 3 of these Alphas? It just is too much. I would have been happy to leave this world after getting a HFN with Wren and Rhys. Oh well.

Time to switch it up to something lighthearted - like Vampires!

Calico Descending was totally what I needed to get out of my head. Being immersed into the Calico world isn't really a walk in the park but the journey is so worth it!!! With this second opus (after Juniper Unraveling two years ago), I loved going back to Keri Lake's dystopian universe.

The atmosphere, dark and gritty, surrounds the reader right away. Simply put, Calico is such a powerful component of the story, that it could be a character on its own.

Infected by the Dredge, a disease that renders the population zombie-like, survival instincts kick in.  People adapt, react, accommodate. I loved the questions about science that arose when I read that book. How far is too far? Science versus conscience?

The main characters were incredibly endearing. Calithea is a feisty and strong young woman who knows to choose her battles with intelligence.  In the company of Valdys, a young man turned into a war machine, they formed a duo I loved to read about. The stress, danger, threats gripped me to no end. The unknown absolutely enhanced their connexion, their intimacy. Their feelings swirled and grew in spite of the the creeping doubts.

Calico Descending is a story about love and frienship that will make you think. It will transport you in a ruthless world. Keri Lake once again beautifully played with the strengths and vulnerabilities of her characters. If you like possessive menacing Alphas and a resilient heroine, this read is for you.

My goodness SHE DID IT AGAIN.

I lapped this book up in under 24 hours and enjoyed every single bit. Like in the first book, Keri does not spare words when it comes to this gruesome world and everything that happens in it. She keeps it true like a real champ and I can never convey how much I admire that.

Keri’s heroines are quickly becoming my absolute favorites. Just like Wren, Calithea is a strong lady who is ready to risk it all for her love. I’m truly touched by the way hers and Valdys’s love story is written; it’s so real, so visceral, at times I felt like I was going to burst. Also; Cadmus, Titus and Valdys own my heart.

Love that is against all the odds, unbelievable friendship bonds (I’m actually crying about this tidbit), a world in a universe of its own.

This series is a must read, people. I will bet all my money that you will never read anything this unique and amazing. I guarantee you that.

So yet again, here I am, thanking Keri about this book and praying that Kings of Carrion hurries up to me!

I absolutely love Keri Lake's words. She has such a phenomenal way of telling a story that you feel as if you are amidst the dark and gritty worlds she builds. I legit died for Juniper Unraveling as the story was so raw and powerful and filled with the dark dystopian edge that I love. For that reason Calico Descending was the absolute perfect follow up book in this world. This story was so raw, gritty and vivid. I was overcome with despair for Cali but could not be more in awe of her determination and dedication to live. Valdys and Cali were absolutely amazing! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time!

OMG I don't think I could love Cali and Valdys any more than I do right now! Lord was this story epic. It was violent and edgy but filled with a prevailing sense of hope that these two people who found themselves in a bleak world could find their own happiness under the stars. I was addicted to every word!! I loved how the most dangerous and hardened warrior in S-block still had a speck of humanity in him when it came to his woman. I was swept away by this story and seriously can't wait for book two.

Overall, Lake wrote an unbelievable sequel to Juniper Unraveling and in the process showed us that in every bleak existence and dark and dangerous underbelly, a small speck of hope can burn bright and provide the will to live. This is unique and powerful storytelling at its best! Bravo! 5 stars! ~Ratula

Calico Descending is brutal. The violence within or anything for that matter is not sugarcoated in any way, shape or form. I shouldn't admit how much I loved it but I did, I loved it quite a lot. It had me completely invested from the very beginning. I practically devoured it in one sitting and cannot wait for the conclusion to this story. I highly recommend to those who love fucked up dark romance with a side of gory scenes.

❝Life gave him those scars, but for some strange reason, I suddenly want to be the one who heals them. I want to crawl inside his darkness and illuminate the parts that have never felt the warmth of the light.❞

WOW! This is one of those books I couldn't stop thinking about since the very first time I heard it was going to be written!! I simply love this world!

When I finished Juniper Unraveling in 2017, I was riding a book high. I named it  my favorite read of 2017.  So when Keri Lake announced a follow-up book -- "Calico Descending", I was both thrilled and terrified. Because OMGEEE a follow-up to this amazing book what could be better? and OMGEEE what if it doesn't measure up? No, really! Would it MEASURE UP?! Let me assure you, Calico Descending surpassed my expectations. It left me in a puddle of tears, feeling broken and shredded. I'm a little freaked out right now that I have to wait for the release of the next book to read how this ends.
❝He is pain and agony wrapped in fire, but his hands and lips are sheer bliss. I won't stand by and let this place destroy him. This is my silent vow, a promise I will keep to myself. No matter the cost, I won't let them hurt Valdys.
I can't.
He's the flame that burns inside of me, the single spark that ignites my soul.❞

The story smartly unfolds as it flips between past and present. Keri Lake slowly guides you through the incidents of the past to catch you up with the present. We learn about Cali's mother and sister, what happened to them and how they ended up at the "hospital". I think this was so important as it laid the foundation for why and how Cali gained her strength.
❝She is the breath of air, when you're drowning. The warmth on your skin, when the world feels colder. The sun that draws the universe into her embrace.❞

Truth be told, this dystopian world is eerie and unsettling. My heart raced while I caught myself holding my breath, as I waited to find out what happened next.

Cali, Neela, Roz, Valdys, Titus and Cadmus -- Oh, my aching heart. What absolutely stunning characters! They were so cleverly written.

If you're looking for a heart-wrenching, mesmerizing, character-driven dystopian love story, you have got to add Calico Descending and the Juniper Unraveling series to your TBR!
❝But time and love are criminals who spare no one -- not even the most desiring. Time is the thief who comes in the night, silently chipping away at the present. And love is the killer of hearts.❞

I was provided a review copy by Keri Lake; this did not influence my opinion of the book.

4.5 stars!

The timeline of this book runs along with Juniper Unraveling but where Juniper Unraveling shows the world outside Calico, Calico Descending shows what goes inside.

Calithea was sold to the Calico when she was fourteen years beginning the obvious suffering until turned eighteen she learns of her purpose. Valdys an Alpha who choses (gets forcedly manipulated) to Champion Calithea. Juniper Unraveling says little about Alphas but is specific to point out that the Alphas were the most unfeeling, dangerous and feral. In this book we meet the Alphas. Valdys and other Alphas are mutated and trained to be used to eradicate humanity and other mischivious acts. Calithea's purpose is to mate Valdys where the mad doctors control him using her.

Calithea casts a strong character. She is of courage and goodness surviving each day of terrifying experience. I enjoyed most parts of the book but couldn't connect with the heroine. At times I did find her to be an idiot and silly.

Concluding, this story was gut wrenching. So much suffering, agony and loss. Keri Lake made a fabulous story; using great talent to drive the characters to situations heartbreakingly emotional. I'm looking forward to what happens to Calithea and Valdys.

Edit: LMAO 2 years later and I’m re-reading this review. It’s so funny. Now that I’m wiser I recognize I’m okay with polyamory, but not a fan of Omegaverse. Y’all stay safe out there ✌️

*RETCH*

Okay... and this is where I hop off this train.

This review is going to be more of a story about my experience with this series, okay? This is after reading books 1 and 2, and skimming parts of book 3 (which, thank GOD I did or I would have wasted so much time of my life). These five star reviews on GR are so misleading. The Juniper Unraveling series is kinky times disguised under sci-fi themes. Like, deadass erotica. All everyone thinks about in this book is sex.

At first I could handle it in Juniper Unraveling. At its essence was still a romance and I enjoyed the character's relationship. I even thought the sex bits were hot. And I had MANY problems with the world-building but didn't mind. I gave it 3.5 stars! But it all goes down after Calico Descending.

SPOILERS FOLLOW
(but read along if you want for the ~sensationalism~, because that's why I wanted to keep up with the series)

In Calico Descending, we're in the past and present of the main character Calithea who is reactive to a fault and honestly so stupid. If not for her biological make-up, she is useless as a character. There was no growth in the story and the romance was just *retch* -- horrifyingly described. She had a younger sister who died and she was stupid enough to believe the sister still lived after being SHOT IN THE STOMACH... even after four years. She has no survival skills, no willingness to fight, and utter passitivity in every moment. AND FOR THE WHOLE BOOK.

GET. THIS.

In the next book, biological imperatives mean that she has sex with another guy who is NOT the love interest in this book and it basically becomes a polyamorous romance between her, Valdys, and Cadmus (your kinks are showingggg, readers & authors). Me? I don't play that way. Like seriously, I was really unhappy at this surprise. From the reviews I read, Cali doesn't get smarter in book 3 either. Y'ALL. None of the GLOWING five star reviews gave ANY indication of this romantic situation - what's the point of giving reviews if all of them are going to say, "WOW. Wow, wow wowowow wow. This was so beautiful, so touching, talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, showstopper, spectacular, never done before, totally unique." I'm not even mad at the story at this point - I'm mad at the misleading reviews.

And then we get to the main problem. Using biological explanations to justify the kinks going on in this book. Look, I'm a "whatever floats your boat" kinda gal, I just like to stay away from the things I don't vibe with. But I drew the line at using fake biology to create this kind of situation. I just--- it just feels so blasphemous. I study biology, so yeah I might have taken it to heart. But you CANNOT say "we inserted a part of his DNA into yours so you guys complete each other" and not expect me to RETCH. I could write a full essay on how WRONG that sentence was, and many others in this series, and I'm also thinking, HOW is this sexy? The whole basis of the romance in this book was animal attraction between Cali and the three strongest fucking Alphas that want to impregnate her. Just TYPING that sentence makes me want to wash my hands and grab some mouthwash. Talk about a Special Snowflake?

Anyway, Valdys "claims" her, but she ends up fucking Cadmus anyway in the next book, and I am astonished at how the author made Cali's body have estrus (basically ovulation but you're "in heat"... it's for animals) and the fact that she will SUFFER/PROBABLY DIE if she doesn't have sex (btw, this part of estrus doesn't happen with other animals). Y'all... we are moving dangerously into the realm of bestiality here. (And you know, I guess if it's werewolves/shifters it's one thing, but I think the author took WAY too many liberties with science in this book.) This just reminded me of how in book 1, some scientist talked about how the Alphas behaved like/had attributes of reptiles. I'm crying. Reptiles aren't even warm-blooded. That's just... there's just so many things wrong with the shoddy science in the series, and it creates situations I dislike anyway in romances (having sex for the sake of survival instead of willingness, romances based on animalistic attraction/lust, etc... I was never a fan of sub/dom kind of stuff and these Alphas push the line for me). What even made Cali part of the Alpha project? Why was she so special? Why did all these Alphas want to fuck her (not Titus, but still). There's a vague reference to some genetic explanation that is thrown in by the scientist and ohhhhmy god, another bullshit line to create this kind of situation. I am NOT here for it. I stopped thinking, "continue reading for the fiction!" when I realized that the science was being manipulated to make a situation where one (1) girl releases pheromones that allow many (2+) Alphas to want to fuck and impregnate her. And then a romance comes out of it. AHH. Biology. Doesn't. Work. That. Way. And if it did? We are screwed.

Now that I'm actively ranting, I don't understand why these scientists are creating such cruel experiments for people they believe are "savages." There's literally NO LOGIC to this world. Why is there no education? Where is the fucking government? Where are the rules and ethics of experimentation that come into play if these are scientists? Look, it's okay to have a dystopian book where there are no laws. HOW DID IT HAPPEN THOUGH? Apparently it's only been a couple of decades since the virus was uncovered... that's like what, one generation? NOT long enough to undo all the digitization and software development of the world. Instead of regressing to primitive behaviors, they should be ADVANCING humans. For all the world-building and research I'm assuming the author put into this book, she leaves so many holes that completely eradicate any semblance of a logical/believable plot. And that leaves the romance, which is full of aggression and animalistic lust and *retch* definitely not healthy feelings. How many times is this author going to write "While we were having sex, he took away my pain while I took away his"? (Side note: this same line appears once again in the next book with the other dude.)

You know what... I finally get it. After all that ranting, I've pinpointed what was wrong with this book for me (past the stupid main character, shitty world-building, and ridiculous "romance"). The scientists are painted as the antagonists. NOpe. I'm not here for it. Real researchers and scientists are on the quest for knowledge while understanding the ethics; the scientists in this book are simultaneously stupid and cruel. This leaves a bad taste to my mouth. Fiction or not, science is the fucking future, and this story was blasphemous.

Sorry, there's only so much I can handle. Not trying to kink shame at all, but I was viscerally disgusted by some of the things happening/explained in this book. It's totally cool that other readers love it; I'm very unamused that no one discussed it in their reviews.

3.5 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

How, in spite of the ugly, the pain, and the suffering this place breeds, we find solace in each other. We find light in the darkness of this world.

Calico Descending is the second installment in the gritty Dystopian Romance series: Juniper Unraveling.

Returning to this dredge-ridden post-ppocalyptic world, I was more than anxious to see how the new charcaters will fare because the first book kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time.

The first book did an excellent job at setting the gritty and dark tone, and establishing the complex dynamics of this wretched world.

However, this time we delve deeply into Calico. Every person in this research facility is a victim of its horrendous experiments. The Alpha Project is it's most important project in particular, for it hones three chosen men to become a weapon of destruction.

Our heroine, Calithea, has been primed for her champion for four years, for the greater good she is told. Females that are part of the Alpha Project are considered to be off-limits, for they carry the blood of their Champion that are injected into them. On her 18th birthday, she meets her champion for the first time. Valdys, the most revered Alpha in the S-Block.

The Alpha Project is centered around three Alphas whom have proven to efficient against the mutations of the Dredge virus: Valdys, Titus and Camdus.

While Alphas are the weapons, the females are their triggers. To keep the Alphas in line, females are their reward or their punishment especially if said female is pregnant and that enforces the protection instinct in the Alpha, scientists use that to manipulate the Alpha in doing their bidding.

Although the world is struck by a virus that turns humans into Ragers, human-eating zombies, it does not equal the evilness and depravity infested within Calico's walls.

Life gave him these scars, but for some strange reason, I suddenly want to be the one who heals them. I want to crawl inside his darkness and illuminate the parts that have never felt the warmth of the light.

Unlike the first book, which was filled with twists, this one maintains its excellent tension-building but I found it to be not as compelling but definitely more sadistic. Keri Lake does not hold back from exposing the extent of the scientists' depravity and cruelty.

All the charcaters are tainted with misery and despair, and so it unsettles my heart when hope sparks and love blooms. It's like a ray of sunshine breaking through a very dark place.

He’s the flame that burns inside of me, the single spark that ignites my soul.

The romance did not develop organically, but the slow-burn did do things to my heart. I'm not saying I have an issue with how it was developed, we are speaking of a couple that were manipulated in many different ways and pushed together for one purpose only. The fact that they have found pieces of themselves to love was wholesome. It's not surprising that the development of the romance is unconventional, it takes place in a dystopian world. Disease and death lurk in every corner.

If I had to summarize the romance in a few words, then I would say it's like the love interest is taming her predator, softening his sharp edges, becoming his salvation.

“You’ll be the death of me,” he says raggedly. “And I’ll welcome it.”

There were aspects in the story that I honestly was not a big fan of, but it did not dampen the anticipation of wanting to know what happens in the next book.

Yes, this book did not live up to my expectations but I am still in awe of the author's writing and storytelling style that kept me completely engrossed in her world.

This book ended with a cliffhanger, I look forward to see what will unfold in Kings of Carrion.

Skim skim skim... And stupid ending. This book was honestly such a big disappointment after the first book. In the first book I was able to at least feel love, and there was good development most of the story, but in this one, there was just nothing.

The flashbacks were super boring and super unimportant, and I ended up just skipping most of them. The first time the hero sees the Heroine he almost chokes her out, but just a couple short interactions later, they're all lovey dovey. The heroine was the most boring annoying Mary Sue character ever, and all she knew how to do was create nonstop excuses so she could have s*x with one of the other alphas, which there happens to be an almost threesome scene at the end. At that point, it's almost like she's forcing the hero to handle it because he had repeated over and over he doesn't want to share her and she almost forces it saying "it's you who has my heart" girl nah, that's NOT a reason to have s*x with any of the alphas when you're in a relationship. ITS CHEATING. She also says that it is to help Calamadus (or however you spell it) but it's just an excuse again. I can't stand when authors write in s*x as some sort of way to survive or heal, ugh.

The alphas changed way too much and too fast. They were all super bad*as but then just became so weak all of a sudden. There was just no development there at all. And that RH feel between her and the alphas was bleh and totally cheapened any romance and love between the heroine and Valdys.

Overall, not a fan of this book, nor the characters. The only saving grace was that the writing was good and I liked the beginning, and that's pretty much it.

After falling into a slight book funk - this one has awaken my book love again!!!

O.M.G. Holy shit - I cannot get enough of this series. Hot damn, Keri!!

Calico Descending is the sequel to Juniper Unraveling. You MUST read Juniper Unraveling in order to fully understand this post apocalyptic, dystopian world. While Calico Descending focuses on a whole new set of characters, Juniper Unraveling gives you all the details and world building that you need to fully grasp this book.

Keri really knows how to deliver a dark, dangerous and gritty story inside a world that you can't begin to describe in your worst nightmares. The story goes back and forth between past and present from Cali's view until the views meet up to the present day. In her present views we meet three Alphas - Cadmus, Titus and Valdys. They are all a key to what is going on inside Calico.

I was just as drawn and ensnared with this book as I was the first one. It is a dark, twisted, creepy and very unsettling post apocalyptic world with characters that will grip you. I was honestly one edge the entire time reading this book. I couldn't put it down and couldn't stop thinking about it. It is that addicting.

I cannot praise this story enough. Even if you don't think this genre is your thing, give it go. Be warmed, it is very detailed and gruesome at times, but that is what makes it so damn good too.

Keri delivers another jaw-dropping story that truly sinks its claws into. It also makes you wonder what our world would truly be like should we ever face a post apocalyptic world.

UPDATE: changed my rating from 4 to 3.5 stars stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨4 Bright Stars 🎇🎇🎇🎇

Reasons why-
1- After Juniper Unraveling book 1, this book comes nowhere near that great book.
2- I felt nothing for these characters in this book. Unlike Wren and Rhys, you felt their pain, you felt the torture they both endured, their relationship build was perfect. You fell in love with them.
3- When I think of Alpha, it’s Rhys. He was the perfect alpha, man made killer, compassionate, possessive and protective. He knew how to ground Wren when she had a moment of anxiety, he was forcefull with her and calmed her and then kill for her. I mean come on he skinned a Legion alive and fed his heart to another Legion all bc he tortured his Wren.

These characters did nothing for me and maybe I’m not being fair and giving them a chance, but if you read book one then you have to see why. The things Calithia got away with, Dani would had been killed on the spot!
*************************************************************
1st Review-
Calico Descending is established in the same time frame as Juniper Unraveling. This one is nowhere as gory as the first book, and this one had more of the Omegaverse vibe, which I like very much was also a softer read than its counterpart.

“On the contrary. You passed with flying colors.” “What? How the hell do you determine compatibility after what just happened?” Her brows wing up with the slight cock of her head. “He didn’t kill you.”

I felt that the three Alphas in this book were a different breed than Rhys. If Valdys is supposed to be this more significant Alpha, I think he should have been more aggressive and shown more of the traits Rhys showed.

“Out there, we have a choice. In here? We’re animals, pacing in a cage, waiting for the day they call us into the Chop Shop.”

I feel that the first book was just so raw and intense, and you felt the characters' pain. You grew attached to the horrors they endured, whereas I felt no connection with these new characters. Now don't get me wrong still a fantastic read, but it doesn't compare to the first book.

“What horrible times we live in, when love is a curse that can be exploited for hate.”

Also, did I mention I love Omegaverse books? The second book was a great introduction to that fantastic world!
