Whitewashed #3

The Anamnesis

Rate this book
The end never comes without a cost...

Barely moments after regaining her memories and agreeing to join Operation Whitewash in the pursuit of justice, Ella Kepler’s plans are once again thwarted by the vengeful Chron. The mind-reading Grifter, holding Kara and Ethan hostage, has exactly the leverage he needs to squeeze information out of Ella.

Supposing Ella and her friends escape unscathed, her battle has only just begun—for good can only win if every whitewashed lie is exposed, and not all revelations are bearable. Some truths are ugly. Some histories are better left unknown.

And some secrets have the power to destroy.

THE ANAMNESIS concludes the “Whitewashed” trilogy as Ella makes her final stand and realizes that, in a battle for truth, nothing comes easy.

As a child, Adelaide Thorne was so picky that her family would sing songs to encourage her to eat. It didn't work. All she ever wanted to eat was pickles and canned Chicken & Stars soup. Then she grew up and became a food journalist and restaurant reviewer for the local newspaper. So, you just never know how people are going to turn out.

She once dragged her friends all the way to Iceland for book research. She never did find a portal to another world, but at least she got to climb an inactive volcano. Currently she lives with her family in the muggy wetlands of Florida, where she is known to be allergic to palmetto bugs, humidity, and flip-flops. Soup is still her favorite food.

Wow, where do I even start?! Adelaide does it again, delivering a book that will give you ALL THE FEELS, but also leave you with a lot of food for thought, (as the saying goes.) Apparently my reviews for Ads' books are LONG so I'll try not to gush too much, but, *ahem* we shall see!

This book is just a smidge unlike her other two. It's fast paced from the get-go, packs a punch, and rarely lets up. There's also a good smattering of memory-hopping. (If you don't know what the means, then you haven't read the first two, and if you haven't read the first two, everything I'm saying is spoilery so for heaven's sakes, GO READ THEM!) It's so neat to see things play out from other character's POV, but also terrifying? Because *sound cut due to spoilers*

This book FINALLY answers every single question you've had since the beginning. (Unless you wanted to know what is Ella's favorite color of Converse. Or if she even wears Converse. Also why is that important in a world where everyone wears combat boots???) You get backstory, flashbacks, explanations, and of course, a wild ending that is both bittersweet and satisfactory. If you've read the book blurb, you know this book talks about a "cost". So...no, it's not a spoiler to say it has a bittersweet ending. It's not a happy-go-lucky Disney movie where everything is perfect in the end and everyone gets a happily ever after. Yeah, it's YA, but it breaks the YA mold in so. many. ways. and the ending proves it yet again.

I'm STILL internally screaming over what happens to a certain character (Ads, you know who I'm talking about,) and I don't think I'll ever forgive her for...well...what happens. Apparently his fate was decided in honor of me, and I'm not quite sure how to feel like that? I mean, honored, I suppose, but also, like, WHAT THE BLOODY HECK, ADS?! *violent sobbing*

*gets composure and takes a deep breath* I said I'd try to keep this short, so here goes: if you're expecting your favorite characters to get more screen time, THEY DO! If you wanted to see the other side of the Grifters, a side that's almost human, YOU DO! If you want to scream and laugh and cry and throw the book and then hug it, YOU WILL! Themes of family, friendship, and sacrifice are heavy and beautiful, and it warms my heart and tears my soul. We really need more books like this.

#Ethella is explored more, Vires steals the heart even more than in the other books, McFarland moves into one of the top spots, and Burnette...yeah, she's not so bad. ;) *refrains from elaborating 'cause SPOILERS* I could rant about these characters forever - they're so well written and fleshed out! Agent Walker really takes the spotlight in this book, and trust me, you'll be thanking Ads he's not just another side character. And of course there's Jimmy. Jimmy Daniels. Jimmy Banks. Ah, Jimmy...who knew what your author had in store for you...

I'll quit gushing your ear off, but seriously, you need this book in your life. This book, this series, this story. It has touched me in so many ways, and is truly a beautiful story that derails prejudice, upholds the importance of family and friends, and paints sacrifice and love in beautiful, gut-wrenching detail. It's also squeaky clean, and VERY uncliche. Please, do yourself a favor and pick up this book.

Am I sad this series has come to an end? Yes... but oh! what an ending. Thank you, Adelaide, for the ride. Thank you for this story. Thank you for the characters. Thank you for this ending (with the exception of you-know-who. xD )

Seriously, thank you. 😭💙 Farewell, Whitewashed...

Adelaide Thorne is a storytelling genius.

This series totally won me over from book one. The Trace, The Integer, and The Anamnesis are incomparable to one another; they're all ridiculously amazing. This is an incredible conclusion to an incredible series.

WHY ADELAIDE WHY???? WHY DID YOU DO THIS TO THEM????!

The characters have grown TREMENDOUSLY from book one. Ella is still our beloved Ella Kepler, the protean Fallow, but now armed with new knowledge about everything, including the MTA's past. The others were to die for, as usual. Sheedy/Ethan/whatever was so... *weeps internally* The Whitewashed agents had the BEST banter and "family" dynamics. James... *hugs James forever* And Vires, as usual, was my favorite-- unpopular opinion, I know, but why am I always the only person who loves the ridiculous characters?

THE PLOT TWISTS. My mind was swirling.

That ending was so perfect, so satisfying, so neat. I would love a short story or whatever that would give us a better look into the epilogue of the series, to see what shenanigans those crazy beans are up to now... Anyone with me?

Anyway, I managed to make each review of this series more and more unprofessional. xD That doesn't matter. At least it's not contrived. This series gets a huge FIVE STARS all the way. The journey ended far too soon.

This was such an exciting conclusion to a unique, fascinating YA sci-fi/adventure series! Something awesome about this series is that I can highly recommend it for families with older children that want to be able to enjoy a book together (read aloud or on audiobook) without having to worry about inappropriate material or anyone getting bored. Thorne does a tremendous job of creating stories that are wholesome without sacrificing the sort of elements that give you thrills and chills. I also really enjoyed seeing how Thorne has evolved as a writer throughout this series because even though all 3 books are well-written, she really shines in this one. It was tough to say goodbye to these characters after so many adventures together (yep, I went on adventures with them. Roll with it.), but it was satisfying and sweet to see where each of their arcs wound up by the end. And getting all my burning questions FINALLY answered? YASSS! I lurved it.

Thank you, Adelaide, for gracing our lives with this wonderful series. Can't wait to see what you cook up next!

I truly loved this book. Thorne does an amazing job of wrapping up this series in beautiful and surprising ways, which caused me to stay up way too late reading just "one page more". All of the twists and turns of the entire series keep the plot exciting and moving forward, and the characters make you fall in love with the story (heartaches, friendships, loyalty, betrayals, love 😭). I want to pick up book 1 and start all over again! Highly recommend!!

What a way to go out with a bang! Thorne's final installment of "Whitewashed" is a must-read. All questions are explained, your heart is broken, and the ending leaves you on the edge of your seat!

My favorite part to this book was the progression/regression of a certain character (whom I shall not name to save spoilers). His arc kept me on my toes and made my heartache. I love this particular character and his internal journey made me appreciate him even more.

There were times where I thought the plot went in circles, but everything worked out in the end. Each point was necessary to help explain another down the line.

There was a scene towards the end that I was a little underwhelming, but that's because of the characters that partook in it. While I as a reader wanted more, it fit the characters' personalities perfectly.

Thorne's series was a pleasure to read! It was a great adventure packed with action, peril, and friendship. I'm looking forward to reading her short stories and seeing what else Thorne has in store!

Where do I start? Once upon a time, I did a fun experiment where I read the first two in this trilogy in a different order than how they were released, and I’ve been obsessed ever since. This book is more than I imagined it could be: a beautiful wrap up to all the things unknown and still waiting to be answered. Adelaide does an incredible job at weaving together a story in which you literally cannot take in fast enough. And yet, I wanted it to be slow because I knew this was the end. I’ve never felt more satisfied with an ending, though. I no longer feel sad there will be no more, she concluded this perfectly. Adelaide, thank you for giving us Ella and Ethan and Kara and Durgan and Walker and Vires and Mcfarland and...the whole Whitewash team and then some. Thank you most of all, for Jimmy. Once realizing the reason for the title, my jaw dropped so many times as I got deeper in to what feels like literary genius. Well done, girl. Well done.

I always have a love/hate relationship with the last book of a series!! I have fallen in love with all the characters and hate to see them go... but I NEED TO KNOW how everything comes together. Then I close the book... pick up the first book... and start over ;)

This final book was a doozy. We get to know Kara much better (finally!), see Banks' softer side? (yes, he DOES have one!), more Ethella moments (but also moments you just want to punch Ethan), find out what's up with Leader *cough* and Banks *cough* having similar hair, what's up with the Tacemus... Basically every question that was ever created has been answered... and it will blow your mind!! As always, Adelaide brings the characters through situations where they (hopefully) grow and learn from mistakes or how to look at others in a new way etc.

I appreciate that Adelaide kept the whole series clean! I have read series where they start off clean (sexually and language speaking) and then go downhill after the first or second book. Not so with these. You can read these and be assured of reading a good, clean, entertaining series.

What I'm trying to say is ----> IF YOU READ BOOKS 1 and 2, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED IN BOOK 3!

Thank you Adelaide for giving us this series!! Can't wait to see any future books that you come up with.

The Anamnesis broke my heart then put it back together. I was extremely excited when I received the PDF file in my email, but I was scared too. Both The Trace and The Integer were amazing books with complex, yet reasonable plots. When I laid my eyes one the first chapter, I knew I wouldn't be disappointed... And I wasn't. The Anamnesis not only wraps up questions brought up by the first two books, but it also gives new background information that serves as a new string in the rope that is this trilogy. So many new elements are brought into this story...and yet, old themes remain. The author was careful enough to hide Easter eggs all throughout the trilogy. The characters develop in realistic ways, and some completely change. I loved watching them grow out of their original shells and become better. In the end, all I can say is that I loved this book. The last chapter felt like the perfect solution to all the conflict developing in prior chapters and books. I was satisfied (not an easy task when wrapping up a favorite trilogy.) As always, Adelaide writes squeaky clean books with *some* gore. I absolutely recommend this trilogy.

Picking up this book after previously having taken part in the author's "experiment" (reading the first two books in chronological order rather than the story order), was interesting. This book deals a lot with the frustration and anger that the characters feel after having realized that they have been lied to and manipulated their whole lives. And that frustration might have informed my experience reading this, had I not read this series in the order it took place, so that at no point was I left out of the loop.

This story had its ups and downs for me. There were certain sections of the story that felt slow, while others that sucked me in, keeping me up late at night. I loved the action scenes and the character development of One, but also felt that the conflict with Chron was over a little too easily.

I think that for those who already loved the rest of the series, that this is a good ending. While certain origins could have been explored more, there were others that were far more interesting than I had expected. I'm glad I finally got a chance to pick up this last book in the series.

I didn’t want the series to end!

No! The Whitewashed series ended. Yes, I finished book 3—in one day—and am a bit sad. Adelaide Thorne’s The Anamnesis had just as many surprises and twists and turns as the previous books, but this book also buttoned up most of the loose ends. Most. Could there be a fourth book, please?

Going into too much detail of why this series is one of my top five, would also give spoilers, and I don’t want to deprive anyone of the sheer nail-biting experience.

Please note, all this gushing is coming from a not-quite-seventy-year-old. So, older adults, if you love speculative fiction, don’t let the young adult/teenager genre label throw you off. It is every bit as sophisticated as other spec fiction, with a strong female protagonist, and it is a clean read. Rare in the literary world.

Highly recommended. Well done, Ms. Thorne.

I absolutely loved this series. Each book was an amazing adventure. This book is no exception. It was an incredibly exciting conclusion to a great adventure. It was hard to see some characters go but at the same time the reader also got to see characters growing into their true selves. If you enjoy a good secret government organization conspiracy adventure with a strong, imperfect female main character this series is for you!

So satisfying . I put it off for a while cause I was scared she was going to break my heart and she did . In the most unexpected way. But then she tied it up so nice that I forgive her ....sort of ...still mad about that one big part. And loved hearing the audio for this one . Love these characters and what a ride. I never reread books but this series begs for it. Whatcha writing next ? I’m in!

Adelaide does an excellent job wrapping up The Whitewashed Trilogy in The Anamnesis. Even though it was a re-read for me, it still kept me up late finishing it!
I love how all the threads that have been woven together in the first two books come together. I was on the edge of my seat.

What do I love so much about it? At the crucial moment, Ella fails. Sometimes you try, but can still fail.
But there's unexpected grace (I can't think of a better term). Sometimes sacrifice is necessary to do the right thing, and I love how Adelaide portrays this.

Finally... My. Ship. Sailed. #Ethella forever.

This was quite the ending to the story - definitely didn’t expect it to turn out the way it did. It was so creative and complicated but good!

This one definitely had some sad parts I was like no more sad and set it down for a while then when I picked it back up it revealed all the secrets and I was like Woah 😳

Would totally recommend!!
