For ages 6-8, this is another book that is going to be a treasure hunt of fun for readers who like trains. It teaches readers about the golden age of steam to humanity’s search for speed in trains, and to how junctions work. The pages are also filled with flaps that offer little titbits to readers about trains — Tuffi, an elephant who jumped out of the oldest working suspension railway in Wuppertal, Germnay in 1950. She landed in the water below unharmed, and lived happily for 39 more years.
Where else would you learn about a gem like that, BUT, a Lonely Planet book?
These books are the kind of reads that make you hunger for more to know and learn — and who doesn’t love that?!

A detailed and in-depth look at the world of trains from the earliest engines to the most modern ultra-fast Shinkansen L0 maglev. This book also provides the reader with other train-related information about track, tunnels, bridges, and stations. Scattered through the book are several fold out pages along with a number of fold back laps that show more about the inside workings of various trains and train cars.
The full-page illustrations in this book are detailed and add dimension and additional information to the text. This book will interest train lovers of all ages. The one disadvantage of this book is that text is scattered in different areas of the pages often near the section of the train to which the information refers. While this is very useful it can also make the book difficult to read straight through from beginning to end as there is no clear beginning or end of any given page.

3.25 stars I like trains, I have ridden on trains, I like undergrounds, trains, but I am not a train fanatic so for me this was interesting but not jaw dropping fantastic.
It is a quality book OH yes. Are the kids I know that love trains going to eat it up? ,Probably,

What a trip! Content wise it's mostly elementary stuff about trains and their inner workings but I particularly enjoyed all the little pull out flaps that makes the experience super interactive and fun for kids of any age

This is perfect for those kids who are curious about how things work. It does have a lot of flaps, so I don't know how long the book will last for a library though.

Weten jullie wat een ‘flens’ of ‘armsein’ is of dat er een treinferry bestaat met zes sporen?
Dit veelzijdige informatieve boek is niet zomaar een kijkboek over treinen. Op de bladzijden die volledig benut zijn met illustraties en tekst zijn verschillende flapjes verwerkt. Om en om hebben de stevige bladzijden uitklapplaten. Beide zorgen niet alleen voor een verrassingseffect, maar er kan op deze manier een deelonderwerp ook breder worden uitgelicht.
Het vierkante boek heeft een logische opbouw in chronologie. Op de eerste bladzijden lees je over het gebruik van wagons in de mijnen, de paartentrein en de stoomtrein. De ontwikkelingen in de maatschappij en de veranderingen door de industriële revolutie worden op een vanzelfsprekende manier meegenomen.
Daardoor is er op het gebied van natuur- en bouwkunde veel leerzaams te ontdekken, bijv. tunnels en bruggen waar de verschillende treinen door of overheen rijden. Je leest over leuke feitjes m.b.t. de steilste brug, de snelheden en bijzondere vormen treinen.
Onderdelen van het station worden uitgelicht, maar ook specifieke kenmerken van internationale stations van bijv. Tokio of New York worden genoemd.
Er is aandacht voor beroemde routes zoals de Siberische spoorlijn van Moskou naar Vladivostok, maar ook de route dwars door Canada en Australië.
Natuurlijk ook aandacht voor de verschillende typen treinen met alle onderdelen. Van noodrem tot airconditioning en de wielen, van alles wordt uitgelegd hoe het werkt, maar ook hoe slaaprijtuigen eruit zien. Bij één flapje ontdek je wat een flens is of een kantelbaktrein inhoudt.
Aan het eind is er aandacht voor gekke treinen, maar je kunt ook nieuwsgierig gemaakt worden naar treinverzorging, de werking van bergtreinen, knooppunten, spoorbreedten en wissels.
Een ontdekkend-leerzaam boek dat echt leuk is met zorgvuldige afbeeldingen op een speelse overwogen manier gebracht. Het lettertype zal een goede lezer makkelijker oppakken, maar een jonge lezer met een leesprobleempje zal daarentegen door het vele interessante beeldmateriaal worden uitgedaagd om dit geweldige boek te gaan lezen. Er is geen woordenlijst of paginanummering toegevoegd; dit stoort niet omdat er een goede opbouw is in deelonderwerpen.
Een informatief treinboek waardoor, waaruit en waarin kinderen uitdaging vinden, hun kennis kunnen verrijken, woordenschat kunnen uitbreiden en hun leesniveau verbeteren.
Er bestaan meerdere boeken voor deze doelgroep over treinen; ‘Hoe werkt een trein?’ is er echter één dat een absolute aanrader is voor iedere lezer, jong en oud.
