Tolkien and the Classics

The origins of this collection, and of the whole Tolkien and the Classics project, are twofold. First, there is the ever-growing awareness of the importance of making scholars and critics realize how much J.R.R. Tolkien is, in all respects, a great literary classic, comparable to those already accepted as ‘canonical’. Second, the desire to offer a publication that could be enjoyed, and made actual use of, by students and teachers of secondary schools and universities.

This collection of mainly short essays, each one exploring a parallel between Tolkien and the Classics of Western literature, is divided into three sections:

• Tolkien and Authors from Antiquity (four essays)
• Tolkien and Authors from the Middle Ages (six essays)
• Tolkien and Authors from the Modern Period (eleven essays)

The present volume has its origin in the endeavours of the Study Group organised by the Associazione Italiana Studi Tolkieniani (AIST = Italian Association of Tolkien Studies), a team of scholars who periodically decide on a common topic of research that, as a consequence, will be the subject of meetings in which each contributor presents his or her results to the others. The criticisms, comments, and suggestions provided in these meetings are then taken into account for the revisions and incorporated into the final versions of the essays.

Dare una valutazione a questo libro è stato più difficile del previsto, e sono stato a lungo incerto tra 3 o 4 stelle… alla fine ho deciso per 4 perché è una valutazione più oggettiva, che rende merito alla grande cura con cui è stato realizzata questa antologia di saggi, ognuno dei quali è effettivamente, come scrive lo stimato Norbert, sempre almeno di buon livello.
Perché allora sono stato in dubbio se attribuirgli “solo” 3 stelle? Beh, per un motivo molto soggettivo: di una buona parte dei “classici” con cui viene confrontato Tolkien ne so molto poco e a volte mi interessano e/o piacciono non così tanto, in ogni caso un libro sicuramente “da leggere” per tutti i “seri” appassionati italiani di Tolkien.
Stranamente, o forse no, questo libro e in particolare i saggi della sezione “Tolkien e i classici antichi” mi ha ricordato parecchio “J. R. R. Tolkien. Tradizione e modernità nel Signore degli Anelli” di Stefano Giuliano, autore che però non viene citato neppure una volta nella pur nutrita bibliografia.
In una futura seconda edizione imho non sarebbe male aggiungere dei brevi specchietti biografici di tutti gli autori dei saggi, e non solo di quelli che sono anche i curatori dell'antologia.

Tolkien i Classici, è molto più di un libro, questo volume vuole offrire al lettore appassionato uno strumento di orientamento che possa collocare l’autore a fianco degli altri classici della cultura. Sicuramente non una lettura leggerissima ma molto interessante!!
