A queer retelling of “The Firebird,” a Russian folktale

When twin heirs are born in Tourin, their fates are decided at a young age. While Izaveta remained at court to learn the skills she’d need as the future queen, Asya was taken away to train with her aunt, the mysterious Firebird, who ensured magic remained balanced in the realm.

But before Asya’s training is completed, t

This. Is. Fantastic. This was the story I didn’t know I desperately wanted. This is about a pair of twins who were born into the same world but were forced into different roles, who are vastly different yet are bound by unwavering sisterhood. These twins, their questionable yet relatable morals, their agency, their intense capacity to love…Alexandra Overy, you have freaking slayed me. Asya and Izaveta are two halves of a whole in more ways than one, and their sisterhood is an absolute gem to rea ...more

I will say the epilogue made exactly zero sense to me, and the beginning was a bit slow, but! I'm sure the epilogue will clear up when I read the next book, and I got through the beginning fine, so yeah I'm just !!! ahhhhh !!!

These Feathered Flames was full of delightfully twisty court intrigue, manipulations, and betrayals--but also thoughtful reflections on the weight of duty and the impact of upbringing vs. choice on who we become. I LOVED the f/f romance in this book, but what shone brightest for me was the fraught, loving relationship at the heart of this book: one between the two main characters, sisters Asya and Izaveta. Pick this one up in 2021!!

These Feathered Flames was a delightful read and one I cannot wait to read again. Thank you Netgalley for letting me read an ARC of this story.

The story follows two sisters, Asya and Izaveta, separated by fate. Izaveta has been raised to navigate the intrigues of court, while Asya is to be the next firebird, roaming the world to ensure the price of magic is paid. When circumstances bring the sisters back together, they must decide if they can trust each other as they once did.

    The story was beaut
These Feathered Flames is truly a masterpiece. Every piece of its world is crafted masterfully, with attention to even the smallest details. Every character is conflicted and compelling. Every second of this kept me hooked, and even the worldbuilding was interesting. This book needs to be read and savored, because every little bit of it is intricate,

One of the things that stood out to me so completely was the world-building. In the blurb, this is compared to Wicked Saints, which I just read and

This book is more or less your typical YA high fantasy, so I didn't love it (though im sure a lot of people will). The characters were fine, though most of them I didn't find to be super compelling. However, the politics, sibling relationship, and romance did add a level of intrigue to the story.

    3.5 - 4 stars

These Feathered Flames is a good political fantasy story that follows twin sisters Asya and Izaveta. Destined at birth for one to become the next queen and the other to become the Firebird, a powerful being who maintains magical balance by tracking down those who have not paid a price for their use of magic, the two reunited after their mother's death and are thrown into a world of political and

"How was it her sister was taken to live with a monster but Izaveta had become one?"
This highly anticipated YA Fantasy Fiction is a spooky fairy tale: part Anna Karenina meets The Hazel Wood meets the Parent Trap meets Frozen.
Though there are twin sister protagonists, it is Asya/Firebird who wins readers hearts with her endless dedication to her sister and other loved ones. (Or maybe she just won my heart because my niece's name is Asiyah.)

I am a huge fan of female protagonists especially sisters that ban together to achieve a common cause and bring themselves closer together than never before. Izaveta and Asya discover their skills and powers and Izaveta after finding out the queen has been taken away by a firebird and its now Izaveta in line for the crown. Asya was

I absolutely adored this book! Alexandra has created a fascinating, vivid world, inspired by Russian folklore. The set-up of the two sisters wielding power in different spheres of the kingdom feels really fresh and dynamic.

The book goes deep into the characters' heads, and I love that the characters are given a full context, and are allowed to make mistakes - they always feel like real, living people.

And I loooved the sunshine/hard-ass romance.

I can't wait to find out what happens next!

This book definitely lived up to my expectations. Based on a Russian folk tale, "These Feathered Flames" has plenty of court intrigue, action, magic, romance, amazing world-building, and some interesting plot twists. It's going to be a long wait for the sequel, but totally worth it.

    Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC.
