Minnie Halvarson moved to Kansas to start over and finds peace in running her bookstore. When Bryant Wilder walks in, she is instantly attracted. But life gets complicated quickly when she finds that he is dating a celebrity, Van Birch, and she breaks off all contact. Because the celebrity dating is a fake, he kept it secret from her, and that’s rarely a good idea in any relationship. Because of the past, deceptions and secrets tear them apart. Bryant doesn’t handle it well. He doesn’t want to l ...more

"Your body is like finding an oasis after wandering for years in the desert, and I plan to drink my fill."

The Deception Incident was an enjoyable read. Having read the first book I knew what the main deceptions were going into this book. I think the author did a good job setting this book up as a standalone, so reading book one isn't necessary. There is a lot of overlap in timeline and plot between this book and book one, I dare say a little too much. The story backtracks to the start of Minnie

I would say it's more of a 3.5 Stars than a 3, but I did enjoy the concept of this book. It took sometime to get into the groove, the story and the characters to nail down the sequence of events and the base line, however, around 40% I would say that is when the words really started to flow rapidly.

Marla Holt is a new author to me and thanks to Netgalley, The Deception Incident the synopsis really drew me in with a second chance trope and a secret baby addition. The side characters from book 1

Minnie and Bryant’s story is one of instant lust that quickly turns to the forever type of love. Unfortunately for them, deceptions, secrets, and lingering pain from past traumatic incidents all serve to derail their relationship after only a few weeks. His heartbreak sets him further on a path to self-destruction, while she is too busy to wallow in her heartbreak. She employs a little deception of her own to keep the paparazzi, her father and Bryant at bay.

Months later, Minnie has learned the

I loved this story!
From the intense chemistry and seriously steamy romance to the real and raw emotions these characters felt when dealing with trauma, insecurities and weaknesses.
I couldn’t read the pages fast enough!

Minnie is such a beautiful, kind and thoughtful person. Having survived a horrific event and the continued backlash from it, you see the strength of her character as she heals and moves forward in life. She’s not a spontaneous person and everything is thought out to protect herself

This beautiful book is a reminder that instant attraction and connection can cut deep. The series transitions beautifully from the glitz of The Van Birch Incident and its storm of global magnitude to the small town and more personal drama of Deception. This book offers a unique hero. Bryant is not an alpha, but he's strong and so masculine. A bisexual man with ADHD and addiction, we're allowed inside the head of a new kind of hero. Minnie is sweet but tough and you can't help but like her. You e ...more

~Grab a cuppa and settle in for an unforgettable story~

♥ Well-developed engaging characters
♥ Secret baby
♥ Emotionally complex
♥ LGBT hero!

This is the second book in the series and just like the first book Van Birch Incident, it drew me in from the very first page.

Minnie is sweet and kind (and makes mouthwatering deserts) haunted by a horrific event from her past. When she meets Bryant the connection is instant but sadly their relationship can’t withstand the secrets, lies, and deception that ar

Oh this book y’all. I was not ready for the Deception Incident. My heart was not ready. Marla Holt played with my emotions so hard. The chemistry between Bryant and Minnie was palpable. Straight fire. Steam on eleven. Had my brown cheeks blushing. The raw emotion leapt off the pages, squeezing my heart with every word.

Minnie was such a beautiful character with the kindest soul despite everything she went through. Bryant. Bryant. Bryant. I fell for him in Van and Clay’s book. The love became so

Wow this story blew me away. The Deception Incident is my first book by Marla Holt and I will definitely go back and read book one in this series. Minnie and Bryant had chemistry so strong and so intense. Minnie moved to Welville to start over after a traumatic event and to escape her society father. Bryant is smitten with Minnie but he has secrets he knows will tear them apart. He has been fake dating his best friend pop princess Van Birch for years with the agreement that if either person meet ...more

The Deception Incident is the 2nd ARC book I’ve read by Marla Holt and it did not disappoint. I absolutely loved Van and Clay’s story in book one of the series, but Minnie and Bryant’s story, what can I say, it was swoon worthy to the max! I loved the chemistry between them and the way the story intertwined their real life struggles and how it impacted their relationship. Marla does such an amazing job of bringing her characters to life and creating page turning stories that force you to keep yo ...more

Where to start, this book was way more than I expected, in an incredibly good way. My first by this author, but not the last. The characters of Minnie and Bryant are complicated souls. They deal with many everyday issues from insecurity to trauma, and then the extra of celebrity. A lot of emotion from chemistry that is off the charts and instant plus the romance creates a story you just cannot put down. This book is the second in the series but stands alone and I never felt I needed to read book ...more

Finally, a romance novel with a hero in the LGBTQIA community! Bryant and Minnies story is hot and complex right from the start. They are the definition of “it’s complicated” which makes for an even juicier romance. Here’s what I know, Bryant and Minnie deserve this story and you owe it to yourself to get entranced with it too.

I had a hard time accepting Minnie not telling Bryant about his son, regardless of the reasons. I also felt after reading the first book that I knew the basic set-up of how this one would play out, and rehashing some of things I'd already read was a bit boring. Probably more like 2.5 stars, rounded up.

Kindly received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This was a quick read but I would strongly advise reading the first book in the series beforehand. Some things that didn’t make much sense or were not developed properly, would make more sense if you know what happened in the first book. The ending felt a little rushed and too convenient. I don’t mind a happy ending but for the happy ending to be satisfying, it needs to be earned. Not rushed.

OMG... I fell in love with Bryant in The Van Birch Incident and this book was just so amazing. The sex scenes are steamy BUT the romance and story are PHENOMENAL! Please do yourself a favor and pick this book up as soon as it is released.

This is the second book in the series but can be read as a stand-alone. I didn’t read book one and didn’t feel like I was lost. The author did a good job at keeping your interest, there was humor, drama and sex... it’s the best recipe for a story.

The author has written a story that touched my heart with this story. The instant connection between them is believable and lovely. The confusion and angst which causes problems is believable and realistic. Great storytelling

The author introduces us to a nw storyline where the characters are engaging and well developed and the storyline has plenty to keep us turning the pages.

The plot was very predictable and the secret baby trope was not my favorite. It felt like I was missing some events were glossed over and not explained very well.

I really enjoyed the characters and the story line, but I had a difficult time with the book being written in third person when the chapters alternated between the h and H. It was difficult to keep track of which characters each chapter was following.

Thank you NetGalley and Marla Holt for gifting me an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!
The steamy romance and sizzling chemistry between Minnie and Bryant was instant and slowly burned throughout the book. But let’s not forget about the chemistry between Bryant and Clay! This was my first bisexual male lead in a book and it was a fresh take!

Sexy, nerdy dreams do come true!

When the hot, bespectacled Bryant Wilder meets the curvy new bookstore owner in town, Minnie Halvarson, the attraction is instant and mutual. Too bad Bryant is Van Birch’s (fake) boyfriend. A fact he thinks he can deal with later ... until he can’t. Add a secret baby in the mix and boom! Misunderstanding city.

I didn’t expect this installment in the series to go back to the very beginning of their relationship since we get the low down in book one. I did enjoy see

This was the perfect vacation read! Minnie and Bryant's story kept my interest and it had emotional depth while still being just the right amount of trashy romance. I really enjoy a tortured imperfect main character and Bryant is definitely that. I didn't like the book quite as much as The Van Birch Incident, but it's still worth reading. ...more
