Take Me Home is Berrick’s critique of the current foster care system, including extensive references to the extant literature on foster care and child well-being. She interweaves her critique with the personal stories of several women whose children were removed from them and placed into foster care. These personal stories make the book more readable and meaningful.

A studied discussion of "is reunification always the best solution for parents and children and if not, how do we fix a broken foster care system?" I'm no academic on the topic but I've always been drawn to adoption and foster care studies and stories because they seem to speak to the heart of the question "what makes a family?" While more policy-oriented in nature, this offers a good summary of the research around the foster care system. That said, the author has a clear set of arguments, presenting evidence in favor of those procedures that she favors.
