This is the second book in the series; while I haven’t read the first, the author told me it’s only loosely connected to the first, and not necessary to have read the first to understand the story.

While I did not finish the book because of the things I mention below, I would still personally rate this as a 3 out of 5, based on the first half of the story. It wasn’t bad, but there were several things that held it I received a free copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

While I did not finish the book because of the things I mention below, I would still personally rate this as a 3 out of 5, based on the first half of the story. It wasn’t bad, but there were several things that held it back from being great. Overall, the story was decent.

First, the good things about this book.

The story is very light and easy to read. The main character, Alastair, seems very well thought-out. We understand his various motivations throughout the story. I liked the author’s writing style very much. It’s a clean read with no swearing or sex, for those who care about that kind of thing. I’d say it’s probably best for elementary-age students who are just starting their foray into fantasy.

Now, the not-as-good-but-easily-fixable things. And please note that these are all just PERSONAL opinions. Others may not be bothered at all about these things.

This book needed some editing, or maybe some more critique partners who excel at grammar. I found so many grammatical issues that it started to get distracting. The parts without errors are strongly written, and I think she has the makings of a fantastic author. There are just a lot of small things that forced me to reread sentences several times because the flow was off and I wasn’t sure what had actually been said.

The supporting characters felt more like placeholders than fleshed-out people. I honestly had no idea who anybody really was, what they thought or felt, or any sense of their personalities at all. I think some of them appeared in the first book, so maybe if I’d read that, I’d understand them better. I found Bryssa and Dragon to be fascinating characters, but there’s little to no character development for them or the rest of the supporting cast, which was disappointing, because I think Bryssa and Dragon had the chance to be massively entertaining.

The big reveal about Bryssa fell flat for me, because she’d only had a few scenes up to that point, and while I thought I was supposed to be surprised by her reveal, it was more like, “Huh? That came out of left field!”

My biggest issue was the pacing. I think this book could have easily been expanded to 2 or 3 books. This book felt like an outline of an epic 900 page fantasy series…and I wish I had gotten that series. Alastair is taken to the “magical world of Kentucky”, which made me go, “Oooo…fish out of water! And in KENTUCKY???? Yasssss!” My brain immediately leaped to thoughts of Terry Brooks’ fabulous “Magic Kingdom of Landover” series.

Unfortunately, that never came to pass. We leap from beat to beat, without a whole lot of character development or story in between the plot points to flesh out the story and give it depth. There’s almost none of the “fish out of water” that the premise had offered. I had no idea almost 3 months had passed in the story; I thought it had been only a couple of days. There are mentions of things that happened in that time, but it’s only in passing. Again, this would probably be a great introduction to fantasy for elementary-age readers.

I stopped reading about halfway through, but I might pick it up again later to finish.

Having said all that….I would absolutely give her future books a chance. With a few tweaks, this book could have been downright amazing, and I think she has that potential. ...more

Goblinprince is the second book in Abbigayle Grace’s Pizza Shop Chronicles. It is a fun book that takes a unique approach on portal fantasy, opening a door to both the real and the fantastical worlds. Alastair represent the conflict any young adult feels between duty and desire, and with multiple kingdoms on his shoulder and an uncertainty over his own abilities, his accidental escape to Kentucky provides a valuable opportunity to avoid his problems.

Like Alastair’s conflict, my review for this book is…conflicted. It teeters on how to classify this story: Middle-Grade or Young Adult. On one hand, the simplistic nature and story-telling elements makes me consider it a Middle-Grade novel, but the age of the characters and some of the death and pain Alastair experiences pushes it more towards Young Adult. For all intents-and-purposes though, I will continue this review assuming it is meant for a younger audience.

The story is quite straight forward, which is not a bad thing, and its writing is simplistic but well written. There are some formatting errors in the eBook version that the author could fix, but that does not deter from the story itself. The idea of a magical portal that leads to a Pizza Shop in Kentucky is a unique twist on the portal fantasy, and I would have loved to touch on this more. I am sure this is in the first book of the series, which I may delve into, Elfboy. Plus, the idea of a half-elf, half-fairy goblin-bitten prince making pizza is a scene that will make anyone laugh in amusement.

That being said, some of the pacing in the book felt odd. I would loved to see Alastair’s development in Kentucky for a longer period of time before going back to the craziness of his life at home. It went from a lull to high speed action that never really seemed to stop. I can see the appeal in this for kids though; constant battles, no long winded conversation usually seen in fantasy, and jammed pack with action. There are a lot of characters though, often with very similar characteristics, and possibly if I had read Elfboy first these characters would be less confusing. Possibly if the book was longer, giving more time to world and relationship building, these characters would have had more chances to shine.

There were a few fantastic characters though: Dragon, the dragon who’s name is Dragon but not actually, is a sarcastic, wise, protective beast of Alastair’s friend Bryssa. Then there’s Marden. I loved Marden. She was spunky and funny, a nice foil to Alastair’s very poised and conflicted nature. Marden gave a nice breath of fresh air, especially towards the end of the novel, where Alastair’s brooding and personal confliction came to the largest front. Without Marden, well, Alastair might have succumbed to the bitterness implanted in him by the goblins, and she was the light he needed to keep moving forward.

Goblinprince is a fast, action-packed read that you can sit down and read in an afternoon. So if you’re looking for something quick, definitely check it out. I know I’ll be taking a look at Elfboy sometime in the near future. ...more
