Lynn Monroe is finally living life on her terms. The niece she raised as her own has finished medical school and started an internship, and she’s healing from a painful divorce that was long overdue. But when she runs into a ghost from her past, the stable life she’s worked so hard to build begins to crumble. Dr. Maggie Randall is focused, driven, and in love with her best friend’s aunt. When she unexpectedly bumps into Lynn it’s like no time has passed. She’s sure it’s a sign they’re meant to be. But all Maggie ever wanted in life is to raise children, and Lynn’s not ready to start a second family. The choice between love and family has never been so difficult, and different visions of the future may end their romance before it’s begun.
Dena Blake grew up in a small town just north of San Francisco where she learned to play softball, ride motorcycles, and grow vegetables. She eventually moved with her family to the Southwest where she began creating vivid characters in her mind and bringing them to life on paper.
Dena’s first novel, Where the Light Glows, is a Rainbow Award winner for Best Lesbian Debut and A Country Girl's Heart is a Goldie Finalist.
This is the first book I've read by this author, and I was pleasantly surprised. Another great age gap story. A little high on drama for my liking, but I read it one day and it kept be hooked right from the beginning.
What is it with authors who have great ideas but when it comes to executing them, they fell apart like the cakes I've been experimentally baking while under quarantine. Thank God for the crows, as my stomach can't handle another failed experiment.
If I am the couples' therapist, I will set up an all you can drink bar. Let them drink into promised land, make sure the couch is comfortable for any nude activities, snacks to sustain, subscribe to a good lesbian porn channel and lock them in. I am pretty sure that during their intervals, they'll talk about their feelings for each other, declare it, and walk out as a happy couple. I might have to burn the couch but it's a small price to pay for not having to listen to them not speaking out, watch the kindergarten jealousy and save myself from murdering them.
Ms.Blake, your storylines intrigue me but whatever ideas you were conjuring inside your genius brain, they were not transferred to your writing. It's sad really, I can see the potential of falling for your work but the insecurities, the kitchen sink dramas, the lack of page time for the leads, the I want you but you don't want me so I'm going to use other women as a distraction - those elements, Bad, Bad, Bad. I am not raising the white flag, I have faith in you, Ms.Blake, you are special so perform an autopsy on your previous work, find out what were the dead beat elements and start fresh in your next book. Cut down on the steroids, add in more endorphins, dopamine and seroton.
Conversation with Iman, my 25 year old niece after Perfect Timing. Me: How would you feel if I date your bestie, Sha? Iman: [Turns Geeen] This has nothing to do with gay relationship, she can date whoever she wants, it's you that I'm worried about. Me: What? Why do you have to be so cruel, don't you know I'm human too? Iman: Have pity on me aunty, not only I have to poke my eyes when you're making out with her in front of me since you have no shame/ filter. I have to punch my eardrums as well. I'll be without a bestie, blind and deaf just because you can't control your libido. Me: I don't see the problem there. Iman: [Gives me a Norman Bates smile] I'm an ex cancer patient, no one will prosecute me when I torture then kill you. Me: Point taken
This was a good read. Sort of. Problem is I don't love this type of stories where the main characters are in love from page one and the author keeps throwing problems and hurdles (and exes) in their path.
I love Dena’s work! Love the stories she comes up with her characters in those stories. This one is gut wrenching sappy love story that made me saw aww and Shit in one sentence. I love the up and downs, the pull and push. I think both characters were created as people with flaws and I like that. I love it took them so long to get back to each other and they had their happy ending. Sometimes if something is meant to be, it will happen.
A second chance age-gap romance. Lynn Monroe, living her life after a divorce. Dr. Maggie Randall, intern, looking to have it all (a career she loves, a family, and share it all with the woman of her dreams). There appears to to be one obstacle, Lynn's "daughter" Carrie. As the story unfolds, the angst begins and continues throughout. Carrie as well as Lynn are at the center of the angst. What to do when you love someone that you think you should not. I thought the read was okay. What holds me back is the lack of depth in some aspects of the story, i.e., Carrie and Lynn's ex-wife.

It was a great read, as usual with Dena Blake. A second chance, age-gap romance. I really liked the character of Maggie, however it took me a while to get used to Lynn. The secondary characters are interesting and have a significant role in the relationship between Lynn and Maggie. Carrie is a little too rigid and changes her mind too quickly. If I recommend it? Absolutely!
This book is the kind of book you sit down to on a Sunday morning with a cup of tea and the sun shining in your bedroom only to realise at 5 pm you’ve not left your bed because it was too good to stop reading. That sums up how I feel about this romance by the formidable Dena Blake. She keeps getting better and better and surprises me every time. The pace in this book was excellent, and I really liked the build-up to Lynn finally giving in to her feeling for Maggie. Especially her little moments of jealousy… those were fun to read.
Lynn is definitely a woman to be reckoned with, and the fact she was older and confident in herself just made her so ridiculously sexy! I loved the idea of being so unbelievably attracted to someone and knowing it’s mutual but not being able to do anything about it. I think what I especially liked in this book was there were so many things Lynn assumed and had preconceived ideas about who Maggie was. But Maggie just showed her time and time again that she was A. not like Lynn’s ex and more about her job than Lynn and B. was not too young. It often happens in age gap romances that the younger of the couple is seen as too young, but It’s really shown that, in fact, they are not too young.
Dena Blake proved Maggies worth with every moment she had page time. In fact, at one moment in the book, I shook my head and said: “Come on, Lynn get with the program Maggie is wonderful!”
The chemistry was undeniable between Maggie and Lynn, and it ramped up the more time they spent with each other. Their stolen moments when Carrie was around, were the best. I think any age-gap romance ramps up the chemistry for me because I just imagine it being all hot and steamy!
This was a well writen book. The main characters Maggie and Lynn had a push pull relationship because of Lynn’s insecurities about bein 12 years older than Maggie. The other twist was that Maggie was Best friends with Lynn’s niece/adopted daughter. That and Carrie’s selfish behavior not wanting Maggie to be involved with Lynn was childish and immature to say the least and almost destroyed the relationship between the two women. Ultimately, love prevailed. Well done!
I RECEIVED AN ARC COPY OF THE BOOK FROM THE PUBLISHER VIA NETGALLEY AND VOLUNTARILY LEAVING MY REVIEW.
MAGGIE IS AN INTERN (DOCTOR) WHO IS JUST STARTING OUT WITH HER CAREER. SHE HAS ALWAYS HAD A THING FOR HER BEST FRIEND'S AUNT.
LYNN IS A NURSE AND HAS BROUGHT UP HER NIECE FOR MOST OF HER LIFE. SHE HAS BEEN THROUGH A PAINFUL DIVORCE AND IS TRYING TO GET HER LIFE BACK ON TRACK.
THIS IS A GOOD READ. I LOVED MAGGIE WHO IS JUST STARTING HER MEDICAL CAREER. LYNN ON THE OTHER HAND TOOK ME A FEW CHAPTERS TO LIKE HER. YEARS AGO, WHEN MAGGIE FIRST MET LYNN SHE HAD A CRUSH ON HER AND HAS NEVER REALLY MOVED ON. LYNN ALSO HAD FEELINGS FOR MAGGIE BUT AS SHE WAS MARRIED AT THE TIME, SHE NEVER TOOK HER ATTRACTION ANY FURTHER. SOME YEARS LATER, THEY MEET AT A BALL GAME AND THE ATTRACTION FOR THEM BOTH IS STILL THERE, ALTHOUGH, LYNN TRIES TO PUT MAGGIE OFF AS SHE ISN'T SURE IF SHE CAN PURSUE A RELATIONSHIP WITH HER.
IT WAS A GOOD STORY LINE AND I REALLY LOVED THE SECONDARY CHARACTERS. THE PACE WAS GOOD.
IF YOU LIKE AGE GAP ROMANCES THEN THIS COULD BE THE BOOK FOR YOU.
I love a good story about how and why two people can know each other for years, but somehow their happily ever after cannot coordinate until the right moment . Perfect Timing nails that with Lynn and Maggie’s situation of obstacles such as work, school, and people constantly getting in their way despite their open interest in each other. Both women are honorable and devoted in regards to their responsibilities that you literally feel their heartbreak when they are faced with the reality of hard choices. This book plays heavily into all of humanity’s feels, and not just love and passion. There’s the sting of jealousy and the sadness of rejection, but there is also the lift of hope that keeps you glued to the pages to see what happens next. The intrigue of their story goes deep into their history as we are gloriously allowed back story in flashbacks through both their memories which allows the emotions you feel for them to really set root because of the time and distance in their journey. You gain an appreciation for the intense drama in the fallout of their difficult choices, and ultimately in the intense passion for each other when they are finally allowed to let go and be together. I received a copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Maggie and her best friend are medical interns who have matched in different cities, cities that the other wanted and they didn’t. For Maggie that means she goes back home to the place where the love of her life, her best friend’s Aunt Lynn turned her away. Maggie has never moved on from Lynn and now working in the same hospital is making life harder every day. As for Lynn, she never forgot how Maggie made her feel but they are in such different places in their lives, and Cassie is still an issue…. Should they even try?
Heavy sighs… This is a really good book with a terrific love story and yummy sexy bits! I loved the flirtation and the build up to the romance, which was a delight. I adored Lynn and wanted her happiness most of all. I could understand how Lynn felt when it came to her indecision with Cassie but I also thought maybe Lynn should have been sterner than she was with both her ex and Cassie, who was a bit of a spoiled, self-centered b*tch… But then again, that would have made the story different and maybe it wouldn’t have worked… I don’t know, I just know other than that I really liked the book and the ending was perfect!
I enjoyed this book and the story, but I couldn’t connect with the characters.
Maggie is a teenager her best friend Carrie takes her home to her aunt Lynn. Maggie is instantly attracted to Lynn, but aside from her being Carrie’s aunt she is also married. Years later when Maggie and Carrie get matched to a medical internship Maggie returns to Baltimore, where Lynn is now living life on her own terms. Maggie has stayed away from Lynn on purpose and Lynn has done much of the same. But there is this attraction and love that can’t keep them away from each other, no matter the complications. Lynn struggles with her love for Maggie and how this would fit into her life, with her being more like mom than a aunt to Carrie. And Maggie is just young as well. They have a past and the book goes back to it some times, but I don’t like those parts.
Somehow all of their friends are rooting for them to work it out and pushing them together, no one seems to have any objections or negative/ realist opinions. There is so much left unsaid and the story just develops, the romance is nice, the built up is rather good. But for me there was just something about the characters that didn’t appeal to me. And I know this is just me, but I can’t stand it when there are multiple names that end with y, ie or i, I will mix them all up in my head.
This is the kind of story you want to get into and shake up the protagonists. Sometimes you feel like doing it with one, but in this case with both. And with the niece / daughter / friend, I don't know what I wanted to do, a kick in her butt, maybe?
Because what remains at the end of reading this story is the feeling that a character who has a relative importance has influenced the protagonists so much that it is almost absurd. In other stories of this type, the character that restrains the protagonists is a boy, most of the time, but that a woman who the only thing that should matter is the happiness of her aunt / mother and that of her best friend?
The truth is that this overshadows how good history could have been.
An advanced reading copy has been sent to me by the publisher Bold Strokes Books through Netgalley for my honest review
I received a Arc from The publisher Via netgalley for a honest review. So this is a age gap second chance book. When the two Mains meet the one is Young, a teenager really and years go by and blah blah blah.. I am not going to get into giving a play by play of the story because what's the point of you reading it if I give it all away. I have mixed feelings on this book. It is well written and I thought it started off well enough but slowed somewhat till around 80 percent. Things picked up and got interesting for the most part to the finish but wrapped up a little too easy for all the trouble that it took to get there I thought. I can only give this a 3 plus as I really did not feel a connection to the main characters. I was trying to decide why as I was reading through the book but I really did not care much about them and if they even got together. So in short I think many well really like this book but for me its a three and change stars.
It didn’t work for me because I couldn’t feel the chemistry nor the love between them and the fact that it didn’t really mattered if Lynn were married (or Pam when everyone thought Maggie’s love interest was her) was annoying and so very immature from Maggie. And Maggie was, indeed, what I didn’t like at all. She sounded childish and so very egotistical sometimes... Lynn was a little bit better and I felt her doubts but wasn’t strong enough as a character to have all the weight of the story on her shoulders. Again, are they in love? Why? When? How that happened? Because for the glimpses of the past you can’t see it and the book is centered in Maggie being annoying and Lynn doubting every step.
Maggie fell in love with her best friend's Aunt/Mom - Lynn - in College. For Maggie it felt like love at first site. Problem is that 1. Lynn is like 12 years older than her and 2. She is married. Even though there is an attraction, Lynn refuses to go there with her even though her marriage is on the rocks. Fast forward 4 years. Lynn and the bestie have graduated from Med school and Maggie finds herself in residency back in the same town and hospital with Lynn works.
Okay so what did I like about Perfect Timing. Both Maggie and Lynn are likable characters (though I liked Maggie more). They have chemistry, but Lynn is not willing to go there because she doesn't want to anger her the niece she raised (Maggie's best friend). I also liked that Maggie was mature for her age so it made the age gap thing seem okay. Overall I thought it was a nice and cute love story. I did often find myself wishing it wasn't so angst-y. Lynn had a hard time making up her mind and frankly it was slightly irritating that she was hiding the relationship from her niece. There was a lot of going back and forth and I know that there are a lot of people who like a book heavy in angst...that is just not my thing. Oh, I did like the sex scenes. I thought they were well done and there was enough to keep me happy.
So i will rate this one 3.5 stars.

This book was fantastic!! It’s not every day you read a romance about a character falling in love with her best friend’s aunt/guardian. I guess the old adage is true that love can overcome all obstacles and for Maggie and Lynn it certainly does. Finding one another again after so many years apart and learning who the other had become was just what they needed. The only thing I wasn’t fond of what how truly selfish Carrie was in the past as well as present. She was what kept Maggie and Lynn apart for so long and what almost caused their fledgling relationship to fail. I’m glad she came around. This was a great read!
Sometimes a story can be romantic fiction but the behaviour of the characters so real and possible that it leaves you unsure about the rating. There are things you wish were different because it is a romance but you just know that the people are following behavioural trajectories that are most typical.
I wanted Maggie to have it all. She deserved it. I even liked the character of Lynn. However, there were times where it seemed like Lynn was younger when her reactions and the way she handled some situations that were very important in ways that didn’t seem fitting her chronological age. Some of their conversations were a little juvenile. It bothers me when people need to talk but continue to walk away without understanding.
I think the additional characters of Beth, Pam, Heather, Carrie, Stacy, and Andi was a god touch. With the timing in the book, it would have been good to see some past interactions to show why they were not a good fit instead of mostly just telling us that through conversations of recall. It would also been nice to see more of a relationship between Carrie and Maggie. Because there wasn’t enough to support why they were friends and allowed Carrie to drive a wedge between them twice. Carrie is in her mid to late 20’s. She’s not a little girl or young anymore to carry that kind of power of Lynn’s happiness.
And you don’t put the love of your life under the bed or lie about them as you would a simple insignificant fling. Maggie should have never been second in Lynn’s life in the way she was placed.
There was so much angst. And I loved every bit of it. I love this story.
3.5 Stars. This book is about Maggie Randal, a new doctor at John Hopkins in Baltimore. She came from Boston where she had just graduated med school with her friend, Carrie. Maggie has a past with Carrie's aunt. Lynn Monroe. Lynn and Maggie both had feeling for each other when Maggie was in college. They avoided their feelings since Lynn was married and wanted to give her relationship with her wife a try. Maggie went off to medical school and tried to forget about her crush on Lynn. Carrie was raised by her aunt when her parents were not able to. Carrie dropped her whole life to raise Carrie at a young age and make sure Carrie was given a good life.
I liked this book more than I thought I would. This book was solid and I enjoyed the Journey of the two main characters. There was a lot of tension in the first half of the book, which I enjoyed and it had enough drama with the two main characters to make you want to continue to read it, At first, I was not sure of the premise of the book, as an aunt and best friend relationship can be a little weird, but it was enjoyable. There was not as big of an age difference, 12 years, as there could have been which made it more believable. I would recommend this novel.
There's something about Dena Blake's writing I find quite fascinating and yet irritating. If you take one look at the synopsis of any of her books, you'll find yourself muttering "oh hey, the storyline is good." And I assure you I've been there.
But a good book isn't all about synopsis. The writing of emotions, characters' development, progress of the story are also the attraction. And Blake lacks these things. Her story is usually fueled by angst and jealousy. Her characters repeatedly say they want a mature relationship, but here's where her logic is wrong. You can't have a mature relationship when you're immature yourself. Her characters can't seem to think outside the box and it's like it's only them in the center of the universe.
Nonetheless, it's not too bad for a relaxing read. But I wouldn't recommend it if you're not into angst-sort-of book.
When Maggie's best friend Carrie took her home in college, Maggie instantly fell for Carrie's Auntie Lynn (who is Carrie's legal guardian). But Lynn was married and much older and refused to act on the undeniable spark between herself and Maggie.
Years later, Maggie returns to Baltimore as an medical intern at the same hospital where a now-divorced Lynn works as a nurse. The two have a chance to be reunited, but obstacles still remain... most dire is Carrie, who adamantly refuses to believe that Maggie and Lynn could truly love each other.
**I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review."
This book really surprised me, I didn't expect it to suck me as fast as it did and i totally had a hard time putting it down. the storyline was sweet with fantastic dialogue , the characters got stuck in my head and I have always loved a good age gap storyline. This book had an exceptional build up to the romance between Maggie and lynn. I'm glad we got to see the backstory on them it helped me understand what was going on in the main characters heads when i was yelling at them to "Just do it already"...LOL The secondary characters were great. I would love to see a book with Andi she was such a dreamy booi. I received an advanced copy from the publisher via Netgalley.
I was drawn into this story very quickly. Maggie's and Lynn's characters were well developed. I liked the backstory of their shared past. The supporting cast of secondary characters were also well drawn. The relationship between Lynn and Maggie developed at a organic pace. I loved all the flirting going on between Maggie and Lynn. I love a good flirty conversation! The built in angst that developed between Lynn and Maggie was not overdone. I think the only character I didn't enjoy was Carrie and that was simply because of her attitude towards the developing romance that I was 100% behind. I haven't read this author before but I look forward to trying more of her titles.
We never know when that perfect person will enter our lives. Sometimes too early, sometimes too late, sometimes both. Even so, do we just give up—move forward without giving love a shot. Do we worry about everyone else or do we dive in and make ourselves happy? This is a book about lost chances, new possibilities, and the hurdles Maggie and Lynn face along their way to happiness. Blake has a way of making a story different, changing it up just enough to keep you glued to the pages. This one is no different.
This book charges you to think about what you’re willing to risk for love, and whether time and space changes how you make that decision. Lynn & Maggie face some challenges on their journey to find love. The major question posed is, will their age gap or family relationships keep them apart? I enjoyed the author’s exploration of these topics. She adeptly carves out her characters, makes us understand their points of view and the choices they make. Overall, an easy read about complicated issues.
I absolutely loved Dena Blake's last book, Just One Moment, and didn't really think she could top it. Boy, was I wrong. Perfect Timing is so well done. I am in awe of it. Not only am I a sucker for an age-gap romance, but as always, Blake weaves angst throughout the pages with ease. I quickly fell in love with Lynn and would fight for her to the death. She's lovely. And Maggie! Come on. Could she be any more amazing? I think not. Definitely pick this one up. You will NOT be disappointed.
This was actually a bit of a page turner with all the drama but this book wasn't really for me. I would have liked to have seen the relationship build up rather than have the flash backs and Maggie who was supposed to be mature for her age certainly played alot of games. I didn't like Carrie, she was rude, had no respect for privacy and very self centred. Don't get me wrong this could easily be someone's perfect book. I couldn't fault the story or the writing it just wasn't for me.
Really loved this book. Maggie and Lynn fought some real world obstacles, history, family, and exes, to come together in the end. The secondary characters were entertaining too. Andi was someone I'd like to see in a story of her own. I also love it when the author includes an epilogue to show what happens in the future.
