So often we are drawn to nature for solace and peace in times of spiritual need. THE MINDFUL HIKER leads the reader on a walk along the trails of Point Reyes National Seashore in Northern California and encourages each of us to discover the path within that connects our soul with nature on a spiritual level.
Walking as a healing practice. This book slows the pace of living and explores a particular trail deeply. So deeply. Poetically placing the path in a lived experience. The style of writing is something to aspire to. To hold a trail so delicately, to meld with the flora and fauna, to embrace the seasons, to be nurtured by the day and night. These are reasons to hike.
Thoroughly enjoyed this thoughtful meditation on the walk. What it means to be totally in the present, listening, smelling, seeing and contemplating your surroundings as you put one foot in front of the other. Altshculer has a love affair with Sky Trail in Point Reyes National Seashore. Walking this trail he finds solace, inspiration, equilibrium and peace. He makes reference to soulful thinkers he has met, and or read in his life and quotes them liberally. As a counselor he has dealt with his own grief, as well as the confusion and grief of others. His walks on Sky Trail have been his salvation. I found this book to be a reminder of all the reasons I hike alone on a regular basis. The chinchilla wheel of thought stops turning, the stream runs clean and I am free to be again. At the end of each chapter he offers suggestions to stimulate journaling. I plan to revisit the book often and answer the questions that ask us to explore our own path. The Mindful Hiker reminds us we can find peace if we open our hearts and minds to receive the bounty in nature.Lost Angel Walkabout: One Traveler's Tales
