Aryel Waters is trapped. Between having nothing to call her own, and being stuck in an abusive relationship for the sake of being taken care of, she feels that her life is at a standstill. When her way out comes at the expense of a loved one, she vows to make her loss worth the gain. Quasi Powers is a calculated, lowkey hustler with zero tolerance for anything he deems unacceptable. When his older brother is locked up on murder charges, he’s forced into the game headfirst to take his place... but he also has to take on another responsibility that he wasn’t quite prepared for. When grief brings them together in the most odd of circumstances, Aryel and Quasi have to find a way to move on from the hurt in order to protect the one thing they have in common. In the process, will they realize that the safety and security they’re yearning for can be found in each other, or will their struggles prove they aren’t made for a hood love?
Listen I finished this book super early this morning, because I could not put it down. All I know is why did WE have to go through all of this 😩😩 There was sooooo much going on and I was a mess 😭 This is seriously a product of your environment story. Some books romanticize the hood life, well this book does not. The struggle was real and it seemed like one step forward led to 5 steps back. It centered in on two couples; Quasi and Aryel, and Miraj and Nahji. They are all young (early and mid 20s) and doing their best to navigate life with lack of parental guidance or trash azz parents that they have to get away from. They are all doing their best to find a better way of life and listen it was HARD. Life kept giving them it's azz to kiss and I felt bad for them. They were making terrible decisions, but they learned and grew from them. By the end I was rooting for them all to just find happiness.
There were some grammar issues, but I realize this book is 4 years old. Just know you may have to reread a few sentences as they are referring to the incorrect characters. Overall though, I enjoyed the roller coaster ride this story took me on.
OMG!!!!!!!! This was a good @ss book!!! If there’s one thing I’m going to do when reading is cry and boy did this book have some boohoo moments!!!!! From start to finish I was holding my breath! There were sooooo many layers to this story…. My heart is STILL beating!!! There are several triggers so brace yourself before reading! Antionette did not hold back with this book!
I’m sorry but this book didn’t do it for me. I seriously believe I’m too mature for this book. I didn’t feel a connection to any of the 4 main characters. Hell, they didn’t have no real connection with each other. They stayed apart more than they were together.
I like this book so much !! A. Sherell is THAT author!!! I didn’t expect for the plot to have me that hooked but it DID!!! It’s worth the read !! Add it! You are not going to regret it! 👏🏽
I don’t have the words to adequately convey how much I love Antoinette Sherell’s writing! Because 🗣️Ma’am!!
This was a journey from the beginning. After Monica and Quaron. I told myself “strap in, she’s about to drag you through an emotional loopity loop”.
👏🏾And 👏🏾that’s 👏🏾what 👏🏾happened👏🏾!!
Her foot was on my neck from the beginning until that perfectly wrapped up ending.
Each character was so beautifully flawed, I would root for them in one minute and want to strangle their necks in the next. Yet each time, I understood why they were making the decisions; even when I cringed as they did. Case in point Miraj… bless her heart!
Although I’m surprised the author didn’t make a different outcome for Miraj and Naj. I’m so happy with her decision. Gia and Cass were perfect second chances.
I couldn’t put this book down 😫 it captured me from the first page, and I was very happy with the length of this book. Aryel and Quasi went through hard times, but I’m so happy love put them together. Miraj was just young and didn’t have the guidance to make the best decisions. Nahji tried, but I don’t blame him for moving on. Their bad outweighed their good. Overall, I truly enjoyed this story.
This was soooo good. My heart plummeted towards the end and I definitely did not see things playing out that way. Quasi and Aryel’s journey was extremely hected but from day one I could see that there were feelings. I’m very satisfied with how their story worked out. I loved Quasi and LOVED Cass. I really wish we got more of him. Per usual Nette did not disappoint. I’ve gone through her entire catalog and now I’m sad lol.
3.75 ⭐️ “We had the kind of love that could withstand deaths, shootings, jealously, heartbreak, and so much fucking more. The kind of love our circumstances had built us up for—we were made for a hood love.”
— Aryel & Quasi: Made For A Hood Love by Antoinette Sherell
What a wild ride for ALL the couples. The grammatical errors is what kept me from rating it higher.
This book took me thru so many emotions one moment I’m crying the next moment am 😆 laughing. This book was everything I felt it when Monica was taken away so sad. This is a must read you will not be disappointed 🌟🌟🌟🌟🔥🔥🔥
I always wish that these urban novels would get better titles or covers cause people be missing out on some STORIES. but, nah. if that’s what’s holding you back, your loss and we don’t want you over here! anyways, beautiful freaking story. lowkey don’t make love like this anymore.
This story wasn't the one for me. These characters and their actions were very immature. There were times where I had to think about how old they were, and yes in a way they were young, but not young enough to make and do all of the dumb things they did. These characters worked on my nerves in the worst way possible. I just couldn't connect with any of them. This story was steamy and had parts that made me laugh but it's not enough if I can't connect with the characters or like them at all. I've enjoyed books from this author previously, but this one wasn't the one for me, and that's okay because I'll still give other books from this author a try.
I enjoyed this standalone. The drama was just what I needed. There was a ton of twists that I was not expecting. This one kept me engaged and wanting more. Man, Aryel and Miraj went through some stuff.. I loved Aryel and Quasi. They were so dysfunctional in the beginning but they made it work. I enjoyed reading this one because the storyline was so unpredictable; I had the ending completely wrong 🤣
I'd been looking for a good read lately and she definitely didn't disappoint. The storyline kept me locked in until the end. So glad that this was a standalone. The characters went through so many obstacles and you were really able to see the growth in each one.
I like Antoinette Sherell’s previous books but I couldn’t get into this one. Quasi and Yel wasn’t together for 90% of story. This isn’t a love story, just a couple of young people trying to figure it out. Just my opinion.
This book was so good and took me through it. Nett once again showcased how dope she is with new characters we came to love as much as our old faves. It was that good!
This was not what I thought it was going to be and so I have so many Mixed feelings towards but one was for sure, boring and long were the two surest words that kept coming up in my mind while reading this story. Luckily it was a standalone and for that I am grateful because it it was a series, I would not have read it, let alone gotten it. Aryel, was for sure the best character out there. Although she was a tad too stubborn and too much, but she was the realest and the way she stood her ground was so perfect but MS. Sherrell had her wait too long. But all was well at the end.... Quasi, well he started out as bae but quickly move to the lowest bottom with his washy washy indecisive behind. Come on, you are a G and you are acting like that, duh? Good that he had farsighted to see that it wasn't for him and he got out because he truly ended up a lame, hence Faith. Miraj, well the worst of the worst and it killed me that she got away Scott free with a slap on her wrist because she was just too messy and just too much. She shouldn't have to get another chance at all. Didn't like her at all, even though she was stronger, and more well put professionally and educationally than Yl, but it was with so much smoke and all. Nahji, is who was bae from the beginning to the end and unfortunately was giving a side kick job, but he needed to be the main character and he was more a G than Quasi was. That said the side kicks from Cass to Gia were so perfect, specially Cass. He was the bomb and so about his business. The couple's for me were not paired right, where Aryel should have been with Nahji or even Cass and Quasi should have stayed alone and miserable since he couldn't make up his mind and even when he did, he still went the other way for a while, phew!!! Nahji was to alpha and too strong of a character to have given a woman like Gia because she seemed to be irrelevant and lame and boring. Cass was definitely the top bae and he was alright with Miraj afterwards. I truly thought Faith had something to do with Quasi that night and he was going to find out how he messed up big time by choosing wrong, but oh well she needed to go and it was perfect that she lost it. Everyone got dealt with and Deed was such a surprised, but all ended well though specially for Yel....
Quasi and Aryel went through so much the lost of Monica and then his brother Quran going to jail I feel like he should not be in jail all he did was offend for Monica when her ex shot her But I think also because officers gotten hurt to still that was not his fault either Now Quran is missing his son growing up even though he gets to speak to him on the phone 📱 and things still ain't the same...
Then two people that didn't really know each other For so long Quasi was mostly certainly over doing it he thought he Knew but didn't have a clue Aryel was what he really needed... I understand also Faith but also feels like she put herself in situations and she got pregnant on purpose knowing he really was not in real relationship just sexual Even when he told her to get up she should have and when he told her to take a pill 💊 day after she should have you can't think because you have a baby was going to keep him because even if she would've had her son still guarantee that Quasi would choose her because he really already gave his heart to someone else the person he didn't realize he really needed.... Don't get me wrong I feel he ad for Faith Being a person who have lost couple babies myself I understand But you make a person stay when they really want to go....
Now Miarj what she did I felt in way she gotten her Karma with Orlando she thought the grass was greener on the other side just find out she was just side piece and then get pregnant But know she did was wrong she knew that baby was not really Naj baby but played on like he was... But one thing I will say Cass was right she gotten second chance to get it right I'm glad she finally let Cass in was good for her but I would've liked to see how things turns out for them.... Wish it was an update or them even having updates to see if they gotten to have Lil family...
And I liked the friendship to Like even though they lost two of there people one to death and other to prison But still celebrated Monica so her son can know his mom ...
I also liked that Naj was able to finally be with Gia is what he needed as well started off as strangers eventually found his other half ...
This book was good and long! Wtbs, I was ok with the length because it was good and entertaining throughout. What happened to Monica and Quran was unfortunate. Sad actually because Mason lost his parents and his step parent. I do feel like Monica said too much out there knowing how mentally unstable her ex was. We never got how much time Quaran got in prison. Muraij started out so strong and I really thought she went hard until that first intimate scene between her and Nahji. She was aware of who he was and still slept with him and demanded something of him he wasn’t ready for. Then, when he was actively trying, she went and broke it off for a man she knew had someone in his life too. By the end of their situation I didn’t like who she was as a person because she kept a very important detail from Naj for her own gain. She was young and trying to find her way but definitely went about it wrong. Quasi and Ariel smh! For one I felt like Mason was just a chore for both of them. I get they were young and thrown into an unfortunate situation but they, more so Quasi didn’t really step up in the ways I felt they should have. I kept saying if this was his blood nephew he would have been ready to do the most for him. Basically everybody was sleeping with everybody and adding others into the equation was senseless. The way Faith got pregnant was silly because he definitely could have slid out of the tunnel. She got the crap end of the stick because to be fair Quasi was definitely feeling her. How he changed his standards so quickly and fell for Aryel baffled me because he dogged her out from jump. Faith, imo was simply reacting to his actions. I liked Gia and Cass and was glad that their situations wrapped up the way they did! In the end I never would have thought Deed was the one behind every thing. That was kind of lackluster to me.
What a rollercoaster! 😅 Yel and Quasi put me through it. At some point I grew so frustrated that I wanted to stop reading. Antoinette is so skilled as a writer because she kept throwing me off. I thought I had it all figured out but there were so many plot twists. I will say, sensitive readers should be careful with this...there is grief, domestic abuse, miscarriage, self-harm etc it's very heavy emotionally if you can't handle those themes. Antoinette keeps things real. There is no sugar coating and I appreciate that.
The spicy scenes were 🥵. I needed a cold glass of water each time lol especially between Yel and Quasi 🥵🔥🌶️ (and you know Quasi is a good lover- when he has women slitting their wrists over him 😅 literally...damn🤤) I think Antoinette has the best spicy scenes👌🏾. It's not overly descriptive but matches the characters and their building chemistry.
There's so much I want to say but I really don't want to give anything away🤐. It was a well-deserved 5 star review! Especially the way she wrapped up the story! That's a skill to tie up all loose ends so perfectly that a reader is content once the story is done. Bravo!👏🏾
This is amazing! I dont usually read urbans but when I do get into my urban kick its like a 2 week binge with about 3 a day lol. With that being said all the stories blur together and I get more and more critical of each one. I mean to be completely honest the genre is almost getting lazy with there writing. It could be complete trash with no character development, no plot, not moral, no ending , and no damn dialogue and still get 5 stars talking about it was fire. As long as the book has some hood dude and a smart mouthed vulnerable female it made the cut.( Lol see....critical) BUT THIS AUTHOR AND THIS STORY was absolutely amazing. She took her time, the character were all amazing, the twist even though not big and completely expected was well written, the situations werent far fetched and it touched every emotion with me. Shes a one click buy for me. Do your thing girl because you killed this!! Coming from the urban read critic! (Lol kidding)
Mannnnnnnnnne!!! This GOTDAM book had me in my emotions, ya hear me. Its for sure a 5 star read tho. 1st off, I hadn't read any of your work in a while & this book made me remember why I love your books!! 2nd its been a dang book DROUGHT & you brought it with thisss! Im happy it was a standalone cuz ion think I could've waited for more. Nowwww on the good stuff, lol. I felt like everyone played tooooo many mf games. I got so irritated with them folks I had to call my husband & vent, lmao. When life showed them how short it could be, everybody should've been grown & real bout their feelings. So much could've been avoided if ppl grew up. Naj irritated me the most, especially when he got his act together for the next, when that's ALL she ever wanted! But I was reminded, Men move right for the ONE thats FOR them. I still don't like how some stuff went, lol but it this book was a banger!!! A must read!!
So much violence and death. Don’t get me wrong, I love Ms. Sherell’s writings but this one right here was too much! From the start until the end. Then it didn’t help that none of the couples spent any significant amount of time together. They spent more time with other people than the ones they ended up with. Furthermore, I realized that everyone was under 24 years of age but my goodness, they acted even younger. I literally had to skip Miraj’s POV. She was so weak and cowardly. I absolutely did not like her character at all. She almost ruined the book for me. Then Quasi and Arayel were on some good BS the entire book. I feel so drained after reading this book. I’m glad it’s over!
Nett, you never ceases to amaze me. Your writing gets better and better with each book. Enjoyed this standalone from beginning to end. It was well written and flowed really well, at a steady pace. I couldn't put it down..... a page-turner. This book had it all, had my emotions all over the place and I loved it. Each character endured so much and I loved their growth development, throughout the book. Most of all, I loved their friendship and loyalty to each other, blood could've made them more of a family. Highly recommend this standalone, you won't be disappointed. Amazing job Antoinette Sherell.
Let me start off by saying this is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. There were parts in this book that I cried like I knew them personally, lol. The Monica scene at the park, when Orlando popped up at Miraj house, the grave visitation scene, and when Aryel opened the door for the visitor at the club...I was so emotional that I didn’t think I could finish the book. Even though I wasn’t a fan of Faith, her calling Quasi with that news was heartbreaking. I like how the book had twists and turns, however I was hoping it ended differently than it did. I sure hope it’s a spin-off coming. This was definitely a five star read⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
They say adversity makes strange bedfellows that is most definitely the case with Aryel and Quasi. But what happens when your the last ones standing in a struggle that isn't yours? When you fight a daily battle because the people you should depend on let you down? If your Aryel you continue on until a traumatic events leave you with someone who needs you to be the best you can be. And if your Quasi you do what needs to be done even when your not postice it's best.
This book lawwd where do i start for one i see the growth in this book with each of these characters from start to finish. Miraj was too naive at first but i could understand why ... her momma wasnt shi.... but im glad in the end she found Cass he was her godsend. Aryel just was dealt a bad hand but she bounced back from all that drama. Im so glad her and Quasi got it together in the end. i was also happy Najhi found his one too cuz he seemed like he was going thru the motions. But from start to finish this was a great read!!!!!
I felt the unwanted connection between Yel and Quasi from the very beginning. Quasi just needed to get out of his own way to see it. I hate that Miraj and Naji didn’t work out but I honestly believe some people are brought into your life to teach you the do’s and don’ts for your next relationship. The way Case was a friend to her and was there for her from the beginning without judging her shows that he’s the perfect man for her. Kudos to you Miraj you deserve that unwavering love. Definitely a GREAT read!!!
This book was good from beginning to end. One of my pet peeves with urban novels is too many sex scenes and not a solid plot. That was not the case with this book, the storyline was good, the main characters were good, and the sex scenes were evenly spread throughout the book. I can't tell you how many times I overlooked this book just because of the title and the cover. That is the 2nd time I've done it, only to circle back, read, and be blown away! Clearly my bad!
Kudos to the author, I will definitely read more of her work!
I love all this author books, but I’m kinda torn on my rate. I give 3.8 stars. I feel like it was dragged out. Miraj just didn’t do it for me she worked my nerves the whole book. I’m glad nahji found happiness within Gia. It was a lot of unnecessary drama as well. The storyline was there just a lot going on all the time. I’m glad Aryel and quasi got the happy ending hate it took it 90% of the book to finally do so. All in all it was a good read. Still one of my top 5 authors!
First I hate what happened to Monica. I’m so glad that Yel got herself to together she was working my nerves but I’m glad as I read that she grow up and finally put herself first. Now I know that Naj and marjai got there happy ever after with other people, but I really wanted them to be together in the end. Quasi had a lot to deal with and I’m glad he made it through it all great read
