Philip Steele was born in Dorking, Surrey, England. He attended University College, Durham, where he studied modern languages. In the 1970s he worked as an editor for various publishers, including Hodder and Hamlyn. In 1980 he moved to the Isle of Anglesey, in North Wales, where he now lives. He has written on a wide range of topics, especially in the fields of history, junior biography, peoples, and cultures.
I had been looking for a comprehensive history of England that wouldn't bore me to tears for quite some time. Jack's family lent this to me, and it was perfect. This textbook style book geared to children or young adults is easy to follow but not so elementary as to make you lose interest. The sections were easy to follow and highlighted some interesting facets of English life and times through the centuries.
Unlike many other boring ones dedicated to historical theory or details, this book is introductory, brief, interesting, and with clear clues and a lot of pictures.
