Cora Vincent is essentially a character study, in which a 'derailed actress' living in Hove is offered a break, quite by chance, with a role in a West End theatre.  This offers her the opportunity to leave her past behind. The story is, says its blurb, 'set in a country split by politics and disjointed through lives that are increasingly isolated and lonely'.  Indeed, the tale is set amongst the turmoil of Brexit, and examines - although not always in the greatest of detail, given the story's le ...more

A derailed actress gets a chance for a fresh start when a West End production is casting. To do so, she must come to terms with her past which is fraught with violence, in a country politically divided. I loved the writing in this one, even though it was only 50 small pages it sucks you right in, and one part sent shivers down my spine! You root for Cora and can’t help but admire her will to carry on in the face of adversity.

This book is one of a series of short stories produced in book form, as part of a programme designed to support and showcase under-represented voices. What I find so surprising about it is that, although only 50 pages long, by the time I'd finished it I felt as though I had experienced an entire lifetime of emotion. Aboud packs a lot of emotional punch into those 50 pages. And her writing is so beautiful. I lost count of the number of times I just had to stop and reread a sentence or a whole par ...more

This was gorgeous! Such a small but beautifully formed snippet, just enough to make you feel intrigued and invested but not too much to slow it down. Loved how this was written and I’m definitely going to seek out more by the author.

Want to escape into a woman’s pursuit of her dreams’s Georgina takes us through an emotional and moving narrative that flips through time seamlessly. I loved imaging Cora in fish net stockings when she was young and out there protesting for what she believes in. I’d liked to have joined Cora in her journey as she is curious, brave and quirky. Somewhat like the author! Reading my friend’s work is so inspiring to me, makes me realise that we should all go for our dreams and use set backs as fuel. ...more

This one packs a lot into its few pages. So intense. Lyrical language. Complex character. Crossing timelines. I need more
