Fail again. Fail better. Bruno and Adèle knew that without reading Beckett. Every day, while Bruno retraced his steps and Adèle swam in never-ending circles, I sat at my desk and wrote.

Vesna Main's quite brilliant Only a Lodger . . . And Hardly That: A Fictional Autobiography is my book of 2020 (to date) and I loved her Good Day? from the 2019 Goldsmiths Prize, so it was a pleasure to come across this, essentially a short story (36 pages per the Kindle).

On a train to Glasgow, our narrator finds herself listening to the story of a writer who spent time living alone in the French countryside with just a tortoise and a goldfish for company. As these companions help her to recover from a stressful period, she plucks up the courage to explore the library in the house where she is staying.
