Another enjoyable Amazing Conroy novella! This one would benefit from a reading of "Requiem" in Buffalito Bundle, but it's not really necessary as Schoen tells you what you need to know.

Conroy is enlisted by a couple of interesting characters to help regress a man to his Mayan priest ancestor so they can ask some questions about the Mayan calendar, with some unintended consequences. I'm not sure if I like how this ended, but I'll be curious to see if this comes back to play a part or not. ...more

Sets up some possible future plot points, though perhaps in a way which goes anachronistically with the rest of the series. I was expecting a different and self-contained twist at the end, so I was pleasantly surprised by what really happened.

And y'know, going into it, I was worried that I'd be lost. Clarkesons? Svenkali? What? However, I'm happy to report that (so far), the Conroyverse seems to operate like the Discworld: pick a book – any book – sit back, and enjoy.

And y'know, going into it, I was worried that I'd be lost. Clarkesons? Svenkali? What? However, I'm happy to report that (so far), the Conroyverse seems to operate like the Discworld: pick a book – any book – sit back, and enjoy.

In this newest adventure, the premise is simple: The Amazing Conroy is working his stage magic, as usual, and aliens are hunting aliens for Reasons, as usual – but when one of them kidnaps Conroy's beloved buffalito, Reggie, it gets personal. Then we're off in a whirlwind of alien gadgetry, retro-futuristic spaceplanes, and a quest to unlock the mind of an aspiring sorghum chef – and the result is exactly as brisk, strange, and fun as it sounds.

Through it all, there are plenty of callbacks and references to earlier stories, and plenty to learn about the characters and conflict in this one – but all that info is folded into the story like meringue into cake batter: gently, smoothly, and a bit at a time. In fact, the only nit I can find to pick is with the ancient Mayan aspect of the story, which suffers somewhat from the 'Peabody and Sherman' approach to history – you know, the one where a culture (especially a non-Western culture) has its most recognizable trait/stereotype put front and center to drive the plot, while their most remarkable accomplishments become the result of accident or outside intervention. (I feel like this messing-with-the-canon angle works better for Fractured Fairytales and franchise reboots, where the people to be messed with are both fictional and specific).

However, I was not given a whole lot of time to dwell on that, because the ending – well, suffice to say it made for a real punch in the gut (or maybe the squeedlyspooch). And if you turn the last page and find yourself itching to know more about that one guy, or those other people, you will be as glad I as I was to find a handy-dandy timeline in the back: answers to a few burning questions in this story, and tantalizing hints about what we might find in the others. Although this is a fast standalone read, it's clear that there's a handsome canon just below the surface.

In short: Calendrical Regression is a hell of a fun story, but the only thing fluffy about it is the buffalo-dog. ...more

The Amazing Conroy is a “stage hypnotist,” that is, he entrances people into imagining themselves as the characters in a play. He also manages to involve himself in interstellar intrigue. This time, he gets into a scuffle with several aliens backstage following a production of his. One of the intruders makes off with his pet “buffalito,” a doglike creature, and Conroy joins the other two in pursuit. This was a Nebula nominee in 2014 for the novella category, and a fun story. It’s one of many concerning The Amazing Conroy, set both before and after this one, but you don’t need much background to enjoy this one. The author hits high points in a couple of sentences without getting bogged down in the universe's internal history.

I first met The Amazing Conroy and Reggie in Buffalito Destiny, and I was instantly taken by the interplanetarily stranded hypnotist turned entrepreneur and his cuddly slobbering pooch who can happily chomp through an aircraft carrier. This novella is currently shortlisted for the Nebula Award. Schoen's Amazing Conroy series always makes for a great read. Like the others, this is a fun, light science fiction read featuring a hypnotist and his every-hungry buffalito.
