Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom by Rae Bains, Hindi language translation by Arvind Gupta- Children’s Illustrated Colour Picture Book- the book narrates the story of Afro-American Harriet Tubman ((1822-1913). She was born in slavery in Maryland. As a child, she made to work hard and beaten by various owners. She suffered injury on her head by an overseer. The injury caused dizziness, pain throughout her life. During her time, Afro-American were not permitted go joins schools and visit Church. In 1849, Tubman escaped to Philadelphia, only to return to Maryland to rescue her family soon after. Slowly, one group at a time, she brought relatives with her out of the state, and eventually guided dozens of other enslaved people to freedom. Traveling by night and in extreme secrecy, Tubman "never lost a passenger". After the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was passed, she helped guide fugitives farther north into British North America (Canada), and helped newly freed enslaved people find work. When the Civil War began, Tubman worked for the Union Army, first as a cook and nurse, and then as an armed scout and spy. After the war, she retired to the family home on property she had purchased in 1859 in Auburn, New York, where she cared for her aging parents. She was active in the women's suffrage movement until illness overtook her, and she had to be admitted to a home for elderly African Americans that she had helped to establish years earlier. She became an icon of courage and freedom. Coloured illustrations help the reader in relating to the story. I have read the Hindi language translation of this book.
Someday, she told herself, I'm going to be free! And when that day comes, I'm going to help bring others to freedom. (p.16)
Buku ini diangkat dari kisah nyata seorang wanita bekas budak yang berjuang untuk kemerdekaan orang-orang kulit hitam di Amerika. Meski singkat, kisahnya sungguh mengena. Mulai dari Harriet kecil yang tak berdaya, tumbuh menjadi gadis kecil pekerja keras, hingga wanita dewasa berjiwa pejuang.
"There was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other; for no man should take me alive; I should fight for my liberty as long as my strength lasted, and when the time came for me to go, the Lord would let them take me." (p.44)
"I was free," she said, "but there was no one to welcome me to the land of freedom. I was a stranger in a strange land. And my home, after all, was down in Maryland, because my father, my mother, my brothers, my sisters, and friends were there. But I was free, and they should be free! I would make a home in the North and bring them there." (p.47)
