This was nicely done. But other than one set of photos, nothing special. I thought the photos of baby near and far a bit unusual and a nice way of illustrating a slightly abstract concept. Baby noisy was fun! So this is great for libraries but I’m not purchasing for my grandson.

My toddler is obsessed. I still like it even after having it on infinite loop for weeks. What more could you ask?

Toddler review: This was my one year old's absolute favorite for several weeks, and is still high in the rotation. Is it the babies? The real photos? The high contrast background? The simple words (he definitely has an affinity for anything that's right on the edge of what he's able to understand, and this is right about there)? I don't know, but he loves it.

Parent review: This is a charming book that strikes a really lovely balance of being very simple while also having depth to explore. In a more engaged reading, I'll exaggerate the words on each page (standing and sitting, talking quiet and loud, pretending to fall asleep...) and talk about which option my son falls into ("You're clean right now!"), but it's also a very short and sweet read for when we just need a quiet moment or when he's flipping through the pages too fast to read a proper story. The pictures are simple and the plain white background is calming, but the fact that it's illustrated with photos means that there are always more details to discover, even in such a barebones book.

BABY UP, BABY DOWN is an adorable board book that teaches some basic opposites. Each page features a baby with opposites, such as clean and messy with a baby before and after eating baby food (or at least, getting it all over their clothes) and wet and dry with during and after bath time. The photographs are really cute and features babies/toddlers that will appeal to young readers.

What I loved: This book is simple but great! The text is short and sweet, pointing out opposites in easy to understand terms. The photographs are really adorable, and babies will love looking at other babies. This is perfect for older infants and young toddlers for both the images and the text.

Final verdict: Ideal for babies and young toddlers, BABY UP, BABY DOWN is an adorable board book that introduces some basic opposites. Simple and with real photographs, this will be a hit with the youngest readers!

Baby Up, Baby Down: a First Book of Opposites, photographs by Molly Magnuson, is a fun way to help your toddler learn new vocabulary. Pictures of babies against a white background portray opposites like wet and dry, noisy and loud. You might even make a physical game out of the book by helping baby recreate the opposites or finding some of your own around the house. For ages 18 months to age 4.

Used this for Baby & Toddler Storytime to introduce the concept of opposite. We had a visiting preschooler who enjoyed telling us what the opposite concepts were.

The babies in the photographs were diverse. The children in storytime shared when they might be wet and dry and when they might get messy and clean. It engendered some good toddler discussion.
