Monsters and Demons #1

Magic of the Demon Fae

Rate this book
What would you do if you were forbidden to be with your fated mates?
Break the rules, of course.

The rules
#1. Never talk to a demon
#2. Never tell a demon who you are
#3. Never, ever kiss one, no matter how hot

I’ve lived in hiding my whole life with these dumb rules permanently tattooed onto my brain. It’s because I have both demon and fae blood running through my veins.
That means I’m forbidden to even exist. If discovered, it’s lights out for this half-breed.

However, when three sexy-as-sin demons show up at my door, my first instincts are to jump, err, trust them. Something about the protective way they hover around me makes me want them... in all the right ways.

Then my hormones are completely doused when the demons claim I’m some kind of chosen being. Um... do they know me? The only thing I've ever been chosen for was by Netflix. Number one customer and damn proud of it.

Throwing caution to the wind, I decide to do something I’ve never done before: trust my hottie demons.
Even when they take me to Hell, literally the worst place for a demonfae. My life is threatened at every moment.
But the worst danger of all? Protecting my heart from my fated mates, the very men I’m forbidden to be with.

Magic of the Demon Fae is a sexy paranormal romance that features a snarky, kick-ass heroine and her obnoxious, movie quoting, british-pretender cat.
Combined with three brooding, protective demons and one warrior angel love interest that you won't have to choose between. Will have mm.

I finished pretty fast but I didn't love it.
Fated mate story but by the end, it felt like the guys loved each other way more than they ever could the FMC. Instead of Blayde being their center, she was just a 3rd wheel outsider that didn't even need to be there. Infact, in the middle of their sexy time with her (which wasn't much) they'd get distracted with each other. I don't mind some sword crossing in my books but the men did way more with each other than they did with her and if anything it made me feel bad for her. Because it felt like no matter what they said, they were just using her. If she felt that way too, I'd gladly read book 2, but she didn't, she still trusts them, so I won't.

Maybe it's me?

Maybe I'm going through a funk, but I'm so tired of the same o same o. Im scared of anyone knowing I'm something that shouldn't exist but I do. I can't trust demons and yet I do, but not enough to tell them the truth. I panic every so many pages, I'm going to lose them and then be alone once they find out! Like I said, same o same o, it's like reading the same books over and over with different combinations. The men in this book did nothing to not gain our mfc trust, matter of fact there was not one bad jerkoff but rather all were caring and thoughtful, and yet why so much secrets? This idea to me gets old fast, I was continually hoping our heroine got over herself. There also seems to be a lot going on, I'm very confused thinking this was a demon with fea, but there seems to be much more with brownie/sprites, dragons, and unicorns oh my. Maybe I just need a break from the genre for while, I swear I stopped reading this book 3 times to make sure I hadn't already read this because it just felt so basic and familiar.

Male on male scenes

Just in case anyone’s was looking for reviews that give a heads up i there is mm scenes yes there is. The writing is awesome. I just can’t get into the whole guy with emphasis on another guy. Not my cup of tea. Gonna try to skip and see how that goes. Not sure if there are a lot of scenes or if it’s just sporadic. I’ll edit if it’s only a few and I finish the book. Right now I’m like half through.

I only made it to page 3.

Why? Because our FMC begins with whining about not being taken seriously as a female mechanic. Just sentences into the beyond-stupid opening scene it's revealed she's wearing a pink tutu skirt as she works underneath a car. She complains about needing the work then proceeds to kick (and dent) the fender of a Lambo. I've gone through my share of god-awful KU stories but this is one of the stupidest openers I've had the displeasure to read. Hard pass.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Mason has really outdone herself this time!! Blayde is one strong heroine. She is a demonfae which is forbidden along with her twin brother. Hiding would be easier if he would behave but alas it does not happen so his danger drags her in. The hot demon mates are just a bonus to say the least. A fantastic story that you will be unable to put down with all the snark and character involved. A total must read. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

Full of common homophone errors (peaked vs. piqued) and grammar issues. There were plot holes and strange or choppy scene segues. A couple beta readers would be handy for this author. In a first book, this could be excused. Having seen that this is one of over a dozen books already published, I will not be continuing with this series or this author.

I'm not even going to address the repeated use of the word "boobies".

Actually super enjoyed this book, despite not really being one hundo about where this is headed. It was the FMC, Blayde was just really great holding all her cards close the whole time from the other characters but not from the reader. It really endeared her to me straight up. Not quite there with all the guys yet, we did have some chemistry but its borderline forcing somethings straight out and there is quite a bit of insta. I'm hoping as the series progresses we get some great relationship foundations building. Like the guys, don't get me wrong, I just don't want the story to rush them too much.

Blayde, is an abomination. Actually illegal in their world, half demon and half fae, she is required to hide her demon side and parentage.. and is instructed to NEVER reveal herself or have dealings with demons. That flies out the window pretty fast as 3 demons kidnap her and go on about how she is a chosen one.. and then bribe her into saving their world. Throughout everything though Blayde is a cool cucumber, taking things in stride etc. Until the end of course when her identity is revealed and things start to fall apart.

I honestly, wish that I had waited on this series to finish before I had started... like every other day, I am wishing this and yet I never change lol. Looking forward to the rest of this.

3 & 1/2 stars generously rounded up.
The book started out ok, there were a few points that I thought I might quit the book. The flow was incredibly slow for the first 30-50%. It finally picked up enough to grab my attention (which is what increased the star rating) & to zip thru the end. The world building definitely could have been better, at times, I felt like this was maybe split from another series or something. Blayde, the MFC, was an odd mix, which it made it hard to really get invested into her, because she would change her attitude like underwear, one minute she's a bad@ss, the next she acts like a hormonal teenage girl, then just a snarky b!tch. You couldn't anticipate or balance how she would behave in each situation with the previous one. The inconsistency hurt the story. The guys in the RH, 3 demons -Nix, Maverick, & Rhys, and then Stellan the Seraph, were an odd combination, and at times I felt the guys were more into each other than to her. They were also inconsistent in their behaviors, burning hot & cold most of the time, except for Stellan, he was the only consistent character in the book. For her being their fated mate, most of them sure didn't act like it. Then there's Tuddle, the familiar/cat/lion with wings -thing. He was also just as inconsistent as Blayde. Not to mention, it was never explained what a familiar does for a Demon-Fae, is he like a familiar for a witch, or is he just protection that her father provided, or? Overall, the inconsistencies in the book hurt it. I'll read book 2, but I'm really on the fence with this series.

3 star = okay. So even though I did end up dnfing this at 60% I still did rate it a three star instead of two star. I think the overall storyline is pretty good and I must have downloaded this first book during a sale where it was free because the series is not on KU and each additional book is like $5 or $6. I actually don't mind the mm scenes and how the guys interact with each other too. It isn't exactly a FMC surrounded by her mmcs it's more of a like cohesive unit. There were a lot of things that didn't make a lot of sense to me in the story. For instance the FMC could have asked any of the guys if there was a way to like Shadow smoke to find her brother. But alas that would have cut the story down a lot more. I also feel like a lot of the fmcs like internal dialogue and situations are kind of off and she complains and goes on and on about how her mother told her not to do a whole bunch of things with demons and then she continues to keep doing them but then turning around and saying that she can't do things or deal with them but then the next minute she's kissing them and showing them affection. Also the hiding of the demonfae thing was kind of odd to me because they already knew she was fae and I already had connections with all of them because they're pretty much fated mates and she was worried about the whole demons not being able to be with Fae but only two of her partners are actually demons the other one is essentially an Angel and the other one is a demigod. But I think one of the biggest issues about the book is the FMC doesn't actually get to know her Partners like at all during the first book at least. Since it is multi POV you do learn about some of the characters through the mmc's POV is but they don't really get to learn about her and she's hiding things from some of them like the fact that Lennox is her brother or that she's demonfae but then some of them already know that she is and that her brother is who he is so it just kind of Falls flat. Not to mention there is three other books and at least the second one is over 400 pages and I just feel this book could have been condensed into like 100 pages and still been good. I just feel like there's a lot of filler so I ended up dnfing at 60% even though I do think there is a good storyline there.

Broken Book Therapist Reviews

ETA: I was right... this dumped me in the end of a large storyline. There is a prequel novella mentioned at the beginning that attaches to a series of 8- Fated Alpha. There is also a trilogy called Filthy Elite that is also about dragon Shifters and in the same universe, and released before this series. There is also a series called Blood Court that also might be related and is published before this. So go back now, start at all those and then come here.

Probably more of a 4.5, but why not give it 5. It took me a minute to not feel like I got dumped into the middle of something- like this was a spinoff series of something so well known that it should all make sense. There is more explanation and world building deeper in the book, so if you feel the same keep going. Also- just in case you here for why choose with action- uuummmm.... let's just leave it at book 1 is PG13. There are some moments but I dont even think they got past third.

All that said- it is a cute, fun adventure. Nothing too high stakes, nothing too emotional. Some moments of peril and drama, but quick paced enough that you dont feel like it is going to be the worst case scenario. If you are looking for lighter, fantasy, why choose, this is a good fit!

Why?

It took me 2 days to make it 60%. And it was such a slog to get that far. There's zero world building. No character development. The plot? It's a squirrel on crack. No transitions. People go from deepest enemies, ones who don't take no for an answer (I don't care what gender, no means no!!!), to best buddies without a blink. Extortion between friends. Trusting enemies. Things that aren't what they present but no explanation or logic as to why. Familiars, what role do they play? No clue. They just appear. She has family but they never acknowledge each other as such. The guys are the worst rebel leaders ever. They know nothing, they don't train her, they even ask what she can do to work that into excursions. She's supposed to be some big strong being but is constantly taken down. There's no real dialogue. And the editing is absolutely insane. Tenses are mixed, the wrong words are used, homonyms are swapped out regularly, you don't always know who is talking- sometimes they're 3rd person sometimes it's 1st. Nothing about this makes any sense. There's no flow, it's just a scene, then another scene, and then another. It's not even telling vs showing, it's like random ideas rolled in a glue stick and then got glommed together.

This book started on a great note and kept that same tone for most of it, though there were a few moments when it stumbled or tripped over events - or the time frames.

I enjoyed Blayde quite a bit, along with her shifty and tricky, chocolate loving cat, Tuddle (a name which just gets funnier as the narrative progresses!), and the guys are no slouches either. At this point, I don't really know WHO I like the most between the fated, as they all seem to bring something different to the table.... though Rhys could probably do with a good butt kick.

I had to classify this as a Medium Burn, because while there is no true intercourse in this book.... it gets incredibly steamy in quite a few places. Once this quintet lets themselves fully sink into their mate-hood - well, things are going to be freaking hot.

I did find the pacing of the plot a little off occasionally, it felt like events or time just sped by, or connections were made with little background scaffolding. It didn't drag things over all, but it was noted.

I received an ARC of this book and once I started, I could not put it down. I was hooked from the first chapter with a talking cat, throwing up. Ava Mason has a great sense of humor that comes through clearly in her writing. Here, she has created another compelling, sassy female character pursued by a number of sexy men who are irresistible. I didn't love the males' characters' proclivities toward dominance but this was offset by their clear adoration for Blayde. (They were certainly better than the men in Carrie's relationship.)

The plot was original and unpredictable and I found myself on the edge of my seat. Whether it was a physical battle or a psychological one, the tension was palpable. The villains were, frankly, villainous and I am rooting for their demise.

As expected this book ended in a cliffhanger, but for once, this author did not make it a torturous one. For that I thank her. I am looking forward, anxiously, to the next book.

This book has all the twists, wittiness, adventure, and the fun stuff...add sexy to that list, as well. It was a page turner with a well played out story.

I think the only issue I had with the story was that even though Blayde was worried about her brother, it sort of felt like she kept forgetting about him. I think that was the only weak link in the story. I get that there is more and it is not over, but it just doesn't make any sense to not have an answer to one of those questions.
Regardless, the story is pretty good and I am definitely looking forward to starting the next one!

Poorly written

The writing is simple and vulgar at times. The characters are written like they are a bunch of immature horny teenagers. The storyline is interesting but constantly interrupted with sex. I'm not into group sex and found it amoral and disgusting with the constant 3 way sex and discussion of 5 way sex with 1 woman and 4 men.
If you're into multiple partners and gratuitous sex, then you'll enjoy this. The language is overly immature and crass in regard to sex which is quite off-putting for me. However, I believe late teens and young adults may enjoy this.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a graphic sex scene, but I prefer it to be written with more mature language. Descriptors like boobies and lady bits are just too childish sounding. I just prefer books with more intellectual verbiage. That is just my opinion, for what little it is worth.

Genre:

A paranormal romance with heavy reverse-harem vibes, featuring demons, angels, and fae.

Tropes:

Enemies-to-lovers, fated mates, forced proximity, forbidden romance, snarky humor (including a "movie-quoting
British-pretender cat!")

Official review:

I rate this book a 4,5 because near the middle of this book, I could really get into the characters (each one having their personal attitudes, etc). The plot, the world building, the characters all are amazing. Fair warning though I have just read the first book so I'm basing it on that. Does it contain spice? Yes. Is it heavy spice? Absolutely. Did I read them?
No, it was too much for me so l skipped a lot of pages lol. 😂 that’s why I couldn’t give it five stars and the reverse harem was new for me so. 😵‍💫 Overall, I will continues this series and just enjoy the story.

Honestly, don’t really have anything more to say 🫣😅❤️

It was okay..

I enjoyed the premise of the story, but it was hard to keep track of what was going on. It felt as though the author had a few writers block moments and added filler scenes that didn’t bring much to the table. Blayde also had a lot of inner monologue that contradicted what her parents/upbringing was. The use of the word r*t*rd was really gross and I almost DNF’d it as soon as I came across those words. The spicy scenes were good, I’m a fan of MM/MMF, but some of the positions were confusing anatomy-wise. How could Maverick pull Blayde’s hair to bring her closer to him or Nix when she’s already facing him (Maverick)? Won’t be reading the other books, only read this one because I’m a slut for free books.

Where is Lennox

At first, I thought this would be a plot driven book because Nix and Maverick brought in NIx's corvette to Blayde. Then they reported to Rhys. However, the character development grew and each person's point of view brought the characters to life. Suspense builds and the vivid descriptions of the actions intertwine with the unpredictable twists Blayde, Nix, Maverick, Stellan, and Rhys encounter to save Torch. Excellent supporting character appearances add depth. THe sexual tension between Blayde and the menn is easily palpable. Lennox, her volatile brother, goes missing and nobody knows where he has gone. Trust is a big theme in the story, as it is necessary for all involved to work together as a team.

I’m so glad I don’t read reviews before reading books! I’m actually shocked this received so many in between ratings. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and characters.

Blayde is a ‘half blood,’ that shouldn’t exist, but does. She hides her true self from everyone, even her brother it seems. And she truly has no one, but Tuddle, who becomes my favorite character by the end!

I’m a sucker for fated stories though, so maybe it’s just me. HAVING 4 FATED MATES?!? Can we say a girls dream. While I can see the point that the men seems more interested in one another at some points, I think they were ‘nervous’ to he too overbearing for Blayde, but I could be wrong. I do think I’ll finish the series, as I need to know how it ends!

I have no idea how this has the rating it does.

DNF’d at 43%.

The use of the word “Fock” in whatever variation is excessive. Again, not even 1/2 way through the book and it’s been mentioned 27 times.

Either just outright say the real word, or don’t and it in at all.

Also, “torch” in place of what I’m assuming is shit?

Really weird self censorship considering all of the sex scenes.

The icing on the cake?

When the female main character started referring to her own and other characters breasts as “boobies” 😑

I just cannot take you seriously at this point.

And there was no real build up, they just met as strangers, and then these strange men just follow you around and you’re totally fine with it? I feel like the ads were misleading.

Sexy, fun and just plain entertaining. You will fall in love with Blayde the moment you meet her. Forced into hiding by a world that wants her dead. Her world gets thrown upside down when four ridiculously sexy men enter her life. You will be emerged into this crazy world that Ava has written so well. I loved watching this forbidden romance take place all along a journey where Blayde is trying to find her brother; and break rules that she has followed her whole life. Her cat Tuddle is hilarious and the perfect side kick for this fast paced romance. Loved everything about this can't wait for the next one!

Hiding in plaon sight. Blayde is half fae and half demon. Her parents had a forbidden love which met with their deaths .Blayde and her brother have been hiding. There are rules to follow 3 rules and she seams to disregard those rule when 3 demons come into her shop. Blayde should have listen to her talking cat named Tuddles when he said they will be trouble and boy did he mean it. I have to say he made this story so funny with his comments and chocolate addiction.
As we go along in the book we find out there is a fourth . I loved this fast pace action pack book . I cant wait to see how the next book goes.
I read an arc of this book.

OMG I definitely need more star's! This book knocked my socks off! Ms. Mason never fails to amaze me. This story about a demonfae that is living her life working on cars, taking care of her twin brother after their parents die. His powers seem to be hard for him to control so she helps him. She lives by her garage with her cat Tuddle, who talks to her, (The cat will make you laugh so hard) also there are brownies living in the garage. Suddenly two demon's, very sexy demon's, push their car into the garage to be fixed...all she can remember is her mom telling her "don't let the Demon's in" "don't talk to Demon's"! Trust me you WILL love this book!

A Magnificent Story!!!!!!!!

This is my first story that I have read by Ava Mason and I have to say that I am highly impressed and have become addicted to this story. It is full of snark and wicked humor. It pulls you in and doesn’t let go. I love Blyde and how strong, caring, and so intelligent she is. Her guys and her have this amazing chemistry together that is just mind blowing. The story is very original and very addicting. It is stunning in its all its glory. Yes, it does end in a cliffhanger but oh goodness is it so worth reading. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. This is a must read!!!!!!

It felt like everything moved quickly there's no resistance from her, from when she first meets the demons to when they take her to the other realm which seems the happen over a day. She tells herself over and over to listen to her parents rules about never trusting a demon, never let them inside, never kiss a demon ect and she just disregards them and starts trusting them without hardly any hesitation. Again when she's at her brother's house and he doesn't seem to even care that some guy has followed his sister to his house or even acknowledged that it's a demon when there supposed to be hiding from them they just laugh together watching Blayde chase the cat around the garden.

I really wanted to like this book but I really struggled and stopped reading 1/2 way through

Wow look at that cover isn’t it gorgeous I ♥️♥️♥️ this story and I’m waiting with bated breath for book 2 but I’m not going to give any spoilers because the blurb really says it all. I loved Blayde who is half Fae half demon who grew up with 3 rules then she broke all 3 of them when 3 sexy demons come into her life there’s also a sexy angel and a talking cat names Tuddles how could you go wrong with a story like that?!. This story is chuckle worthy and sexy and I want more please, amazing story and I definitely recommend this book.

A great read full of adventure, snark, and steam! I loved Blayde’s attitude and strength and her sass kept me laughing. Mason did a great job at world building and creating complex characters while adding humor and steaminess that flowed naturally. The guys were incredibly sexy, yet full of layers and uniquely different, and Tuddle was an absolute riot. While the POV shifts did take a little time to sort out, I really enjoyed getting each of their perspectives. This was my first time reading this author but I really enjoyed her writing style and look forward to reading the next book!
