Shelly's review here pretty much captures my opinion of the book. There were lots of features of it that I just didn't find believable. It was annoying. Super annoying.

It was also published in 2000, but there was a real 1980s "bodice ripper" feel to it. Maybe it's because the hero ripped the heroine's clothing repeatedly while ravishing her. I don't know. That "taste" of the 1980s was really disappointing to me. I don't expect that in recently published romance novels.

Silk and steel is another fantastic historical romance by Kat Martin.
Lady Kathryn is the victim of her greedy uncle who decides to steal her fortune by committing her to an insane asylum so when she escapes and ends up in the carriage of Lucien Montaine, Marquess of Litchfeild, she begs him to help her and saves her from her greedy guardian.
This is an amazing historical romance with lots of twists and turns, passions, dangers and emotions.
Thank you Kat Martin

This was the very first book I read that got me interested in historical romance! Years later I still come back to it, there are moments that are unexpected and just when the reader thinks they know what's going on (since we've all read so many plots/books) it shifts. I've read other books by Kat Martin but nothing compares to my first love.

Enjoyed this one, it was a little different story with some interesting twists. Lady Katheryn escapes and ends up needing Lucien to help her. She is frightened and therefore often does things that keep the story interesting.

La he disfrutado mucho.

I got halfway through but then had to stop for these three reasons:

1. Holy crap, if I see the phrase "her small breasts" or some variation thereof again I'm going to scream.

2. Kathryn is locked up in St Bartholomew's Hospital because her uncle said she was insane. As far as I know, St Bart's was not an insane asylum and was an actual working hospital for sick folk (see A Study in Scarlet, where Holmes & Watson first meet in one of the labs). Bethlem Royal Hospital, on the other hand, was "a

The premise of the book involving Kat escaping from an institution and finding refuge with Lucien was the only reason I picked up the book and I found that interesting and decently played out. However, there were several little plots and characters that were not fleshed out so that when they were resolved it almost felt like going down a checklist to get to the end of the story. They probably could have been omitted so more space could be given to Kat and Lucien's developing relationship during ...more

Historical romance is no longer my favorite genre, but I have a ton of them and I have really enjoyed Kat Martin's Against the... series so I grabbed this as an escape from the murder and mayhem I usually read. Unfortunately, it did not measure up.

Lady Kathryn Grayson has been sent to the insane asylum, St. Barts, by her evil uncle so he can control her fortune and not put up with her or her very unladylike interest in medicine. She escapes and stows away in the luggage boot of Lucien Montaine,

Lady Kathryn Grayson made a daring escape from the insane asylum her uncle had her placed in. Finding herself on the run, she meets up with the Marquess of Litchfield, Lucien Montaine. A web of lies, and she ends up back in the asylum, holding on to the faint hope Lucien will free her.

Lucien does not think Kathryn is insane. Perhaps a little too involved with the medical profession, as unseemly a venture as a woman could get in to, but not insane. Stealing her away, he is dumbfounded when he fee

The fixings of a romance, with a compelling main character, a somewhat logical and elaborate plot behind the romance and deception, and well-researched time period references to make even reluctant romance readers fall for romance! Kat Martin's writing is a good hook for readers who normally steer clear of paperback romances to give the bodice rippers another chance. (This one is a little more on the modest side, and it still reads quite nicely, if not even better for the content.)

Admire Kathryn who sticks to the pursuit of her passion no matter the consequences. Lucien is a strong, loyal, dependable man whose ideal wife is not Kathryn. Their many trials and tribulations make this a good read. "...With each of your words, I am burning in the hell of my making."

Good read. The characters were well-formed and the setting was unique. Very good writing. The only thing that bothered me was the ending and how they were away from each other for so long. I don't think that was necessary to further the story.

One of my favorites by this author.

I like how Kathryn is strong enough to face censure from everyone when they find out about her studies into healing. The horrors of the madhouse portrayed are frightening.

Love finding a new author, at least new to me. I do live by the quote "so many books, so little time." Just a lovely story of strength and love overcoming obstacles. Will now have to find "Nothing But Velvet" by the same author.
