Kathleen Kelly Martin (aka Kathy Lawrence, Kasey Mars)

Kathleen Kelly was born on 14 July 1947 in the Central Valley of California, USA. She obtained a degree in Anthropology and also studied History at the University of California in Santa Barbara. She was a real estate broker, when she met her future husband, Larry Jay Martin. A short time after the two became acquainted, Larry asked her to read an unpublished manuscript of an historical western he'd written. Kat fell in love with both the book and the author! Then, after doing some editing for him, she thought she'd try her own hand at writing. She moved on to become a full time writer.

Published since 1988, she signed her books with her married name, Kat Martin, but she also used two pseudonyms: Kathy Lawrence for a book in collaboration with her husband Larry Jay Martin, and Kasey Mars for her first contemporary romances. The New York Times bestselling writer, among her many awards, has won the prestigious RT Book Review Magazine Career Achievement Award. To date, Kat has over eleven million copies of her books in print. She has been published in seventeen foreign countries, including England, South Africa, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Greece, Norway, Sweden, Russia, Bulgaria, China, and Korea.

Currently residing with her husband, a Western-writer and photographer, in Missoula, Montana, USA. But when they are not writing, they also enjoy skiing and traveling, particularly to Europe.

"I've always loved books. I was an avid reader, with any number of my own stories rolling around in my head. Writing them down seemed a logical step."

"I love anything old," Kat says. "I love to travel and especially like to visit the places where my books are set. My husband and I often stay in out-of-the-way inns and houses built in times past. It's fun and it gives a wonderful sense of a by-gone era."

The first 85% of this book was fantastic. I cannot forgive the ending. Truly. So be forewarned, Spoilers ahead. This sequel follows Lucien Montaine, a cynical lord who for some reason, seeing how happy his friend Jason is (but remembering how much pain he endured) has decided that love is not for him. So he's engaged to a useless twit of a woman. Along comes Kathryn Grayson, who has been committed by her uncle to control her fortune and will stop at nothing to keep it. So Lucien sets out to protect her and finds himself falling in love (she goes first though!).

Here's the thing. First, and this is forgivable, she betrays him into marriage. And he is righteously angry. Livid. With reason. But he sees things differently after a while, though he has trouble accepting some of her hobbies. She is an absolute coward who acts without discussing her actions because she's afraid of his reaction. She's already (seemingly) ruined his life with a marriage he didn't want and forced him to face scandal because he has to cry off of his previous engagement. Then she proceeds to muck about in her studies risking even more scandal (though I understand she needs to do this.) The two of them have a very passionate, yet rather angsty and turbulent relationship. All of this could still be a great book, really!

But then, while Lucien is out realizing he loves her, she runs away. And so rather than facing him and giving him the chance to admit it, she just disappears on him. And he goes on a frantic search to find her (not only Lucien, but also his close friends and his aunt who are quite worried about her). Now while she's away for a year, she gives birth to his son and she feels a bit lonely. While she's gone he stops eating, loses weight, becomes a recluse, begins to lose faith and actually accepts that he will never see her again. Then she suddenly shows up with his son. After her cowardly escape because she was afraid to face him, I wanted her to feel some serious guilt. She destroyed the man that she loved and it wasn't until the following day when faced with the little boy that she had practically adopted into the family and then abandoned that she doubted her decision to leave. She made him suffer like that and she hardly suffers at all. She doesn't even apologize. The selfish, cold-hearted bitch. I can't forgive her. In the absence of her guilt, I would have preferred Lucien's anger - but no, by this time he's a broken, doormat of a hero. No thanks.

this is the first i read kat's book, and i love it so much ;)

the story is begin about Lady Kathryn Grayson who is a gently bred noblewoman with a privileged future ahead of her until her greedy uncle decides to steal her fortune by committing her to an insane asylum.

Kathryn decided to escape from the trouble place and the fortune came when the night she excaped and found a carriage and then jumped to the carriage but that she dont know is that the carriage belong to Lord Litchfield who is a man of honor and probably her only salvation.

Desperate to save herself, no other choice, she attempts to seduce him and forces him into marriage.
but one thing she knew exactly that she couldn't take his heart.

The moment Lucien encounters the ragged, hungry waif with the dignity of a queen, he fights against wanting her. Though captivated by her intellect, strong will, and beauty, he will never love the woman who has deceived him.

Will kathryn success to gain his heart and will lucien finally open his heart and admit that he cant life without the woman who actually captured his heart from the fist time their meeting? meanwhile kathryn's uncle still trying to gain what he think that belong to him?

my review in indonesia

Sementara itu lucien yg berusaha menepis ketertarikannya kpd kathryn akibat masa lalu akhirnya hrs mengakui bhw dia tak dpt melawan rasa ketertarikan diantara mrk berdua.

Mampukah kathryn memenangkan hati Lucien dan apakah lucien dpt membuka hati dan akhirnya menerima bhw dia tdk akan bs hidup tanpa kathryn yg sebenarnya tlh menjerat hatinya sejak awal mrk bertemu sementara itu sang paman terus berusaha mendptkan kembali apa yg diyakininnya adalah miliknya

Have you ever read a book that just took one step over the believability line? This is one of those books. While some things were believable, some just had me rolling my eyes in annoyance. It just seemed like there were one too many elements to the plot and not all of them were carried off successfully.

Something that also bothered me was Kathryn. She wants to study medicine and learn all there is to know and yet she doesn't want to actually practice medicine... and yet she does. Maybe I just didn't get the difference between being a doctor and helping the local people with their ailments. Is that not the same thing? Kathryn also overacts too much and frequently jumps to conclusions instead of waiting things out. She runs away with little to no cause and plans to stay away forever.

This book could have been better, but it annoyed me too much.

Why does the FMC lick her lips incessantly!!!! If she licks them so much, they’ll inevitably get dryer and then he’ll be making out with some crusty ass lips and that’s just not hot.

However, pet peeve aside, this is actually the best Kat Martin book I’ve read. In fact, this is the one instance where I’ll refrain from calling her poor man’s McNaught. It was a unique plot, a bit weak on the historical sure, the writing could have been flushed out a bit more (i.e. put something else in there instead of the FMC’s licking her lips 150 times in the span of one book- even as she’s about to be killed) but overall, it was enjoyable.

I actually liked that for once the MMC wasn’t some veritable king who controlled the world at the tip of his fingers. He exhausted nearly all resources and he still couldn’t get her out with money :)

No idea why it’s called silk and steel though. No silk nor steel mentioned in the duration. Or maybe it was and I was just waiting for the boinking and I missed it haha.

When caught in a compromising position, Lucien Montaine, the Marquess of Litchfield, is forced to marry Lady Kathryn Grayson. Knowing that she would be despised by Lucien for her act of treachery, Kathryn knew no other way to escape from the evil clutches of her guardian uncle Douglas Roth, the Earl of Dunston. Lucien was attracted to Kathryn’s beauty but it took awhile for him to forgive her for what she had done. Lucien was an organized man who had his life all planned out until he met the whirlwind that was Kathryn.

I loved the story of Lucien and Kathryn. Another great romance from Kat Martin.

Shelly's review here pretty much captures my opinion of the book. There were lots of features of it that I just didn't find believable. It was annoying. Super annoying.

It was also published in 2000, but there was a real 1980s "bodice ripper" feel to it. Maybe it's because the hero ripped the heroine's clothing repeatedly while ravishing her. I don't know. That "taste" of the 1980s was really disappointing to me. I don't expect that in recently published romance novels.

This was the very first book I read that got me interested in historical romance! Years later I still come back to it, there are moments that are unexpected and just when the reader thinks they know what's going on (since we've all read so many plots/books) it shifts. I've read other books by Kat Martin but nothing compares to my first love.

Meh. I didn’t read the back cover before starting this but I guess it clearly states the heroine, Kathryn, forces the hero, Lucien, into marriage. Not a fan of that, I must say.

Katherine is under her evil uncles care, who basically locks her away in an insane asylum and wastes away her fortune. She escapes and happens across the hero’s carriage and stows away. He finds her and thus they meet and get to know each other.

She traps him into marriage by planning to seduce him, although her feelings are (somewhat) genuine and writes a note beforehand to secure an audience.
Did not like this! I get that it’s a part of this plot but I just felt so bad for the hero.

Also random side romance plot about the hero’s aging aunt that I could well do without. Enjoyed her character in the book but really dislike split romances.

Then as it keeps going, it seems like they are falling in love and dumb miscommunication enters the plot. She says she still wants an annulment (she doesn’t) so he gets upset and annoyed that she has no feelings for him. So instead of telling her how he feels he MUST impregnable her! I’m all for a good impregnating 😆, don’t get me wrong but just TALK TO EACH OTHER!!!

They end up thwarting her uncle and live happily ever after. Not a horrendous book but not one I loved

(2.5/3)

I was honestly really intrigued by this plot because I’ve never heard of a story like this before. However, I usually can overlook the suspicious instant attraction, the characters being through situations where they’re hurt but miraculously recovering quickly, and the annoying miscommunication… I couldn’t totally get over that in this book.

First of all, she truly thought the only way to save herself was to take advantage of the only man who has helped her? And then she gets mad when he wants her to give something up? And on that topic, he likes her because he can talk to her about philosophy and respects her knowledge of medicine but then once they’re married deems those topics inappropriate for his wife???

These two could not catch a break and wanted them to so badly. I also cannot respect that she had a child and kept it from him for months.

Overall, there were things I liked about this story but a lot that I could disappointing.

3 Stars!

The first 3/4's of the book was pretty good. I liked the heroine (Kathryn) who was a determined survivor. Kathryn,an orphaned 20 year old on the run from an evil uncle who controlled her fortune and her life had been declared insane and hospitalized in a brutal assylem. She managed to escape and right into the center of the hero's world....(Lucian) He believed her story and set out to protect her. They quickly built a solid friendship and grew to appreciate and respect one another.

But Lucian was engaged was looking forward to a placid, quiet life with a wife who stayed in the background, gave him children and was the perfect hostess...nothing more. Kathryn starts to believe that even Lucian can not keep her safe from her uncle and traps him in marriage to save herself. He is furious at first for her ruining his plans and for being betrayed and lied to.

This is where all the misunderstandings start happening. When a man doesn't look for or know what love is, runs into a woman who has a brain and is independent and strong...oh and happens to love him...you can imagine all the problems that might happen. And they do. Kathryn eventually leaves him (pregnant) thinking he doesn't want her and he finally realizes his feelings for her and searches for months for her.

Then it got really silly. She returns with their child because she feels she has stolen his birthright and he just takes her back...no bitterness, anger or frustration. and within a day they are falling into a easy pattern of life. I some how think that human beings might not really work this way in real life. I was a little disappointed in the ending after spending alot of time reading the novel. I liked the feelings that Kathryn was feeling. I got a real sense for what she was thinking and feeling but Lucian kinda fell flat for me.

All-in-all: Not bad.

Lady Kathryn je obeťou svojho pažravého strýka. On si svoju budúcnosť predstavuje ako užívanie si peňazí.

Silk and steel is another fantastic historical romance by Kat Martin.
Lady Kathryn is the victim of her greedy uncle who decides to steal her fortune by committing her to an insane asylum so when she escapes and ends up in the carriage of Lucien Montaine, Marquess of Litchfeild, she begs him to help her and saves her from her greedy guardian.
This is an amazing historical romance with lots of twists and turns, passions, dangers and emotions.
Thank you Kat Martin

The ML was just a walking red flag:
-He would stare at barmaids rears and excuse himself by saying I'm not being satisfied at home. Eww
-"I mean to have you, Kathryn. You may as well resign yourself." He tried to SA the FL. The book was like but he's soo hurt.
-"There were a number of handsome young rogues in the village, and he had experienced firsthand her passionate nature. He'd be damned if he would allow her to trifle with one of them." This is just after he visited his mistress. Also she wasn't even meeting them so double standards!!
-"You're as mad as she is." The FL was locked in an insane asylum by her crazy uncle. This moment is a couple chapters after he had told his friend maybe she is crazy. To which she overheard, and he begged her forgiveness.
-"She will have to give them up, of course." If someone refers to your passions like this, they don't truly love you. The FL is interested in medicine after the loss of a loved one and helps villagers who can't afford medicine to which he continually minimizes and discredits.
-"She's a woman. She has no business engaging in that sort of pasttime." At the beginning of the book, he would let her reading and found it endearing if a bit odd, but than later in the book, he is completely against it.
-"Oddly, as soon as it was certain the child would live, Lucien had left the house and Kathryn hadn't seen him since." like what the heck

I also didn't really like the FL as she kept running away, making promises she had no intention of keeping, and kept his kid away from the ML for a year.
