This book was written prior to the invention of carbon fiber poles, but aside from including this category of rods in the chapters on selecting gear, every other bit of information in this book is relevant and useful. As a complete novice to fly fishing (but somewhat experienced with spinning tackle) I found this book to be an excellent introduction to the sport. It gave me confidence to get out there and start casting and not worry about looking like I stepped out of an L.L. Bean catalog. I wasn't even considering saltwater fishing at first, but Slaymaker makes it sound so exciting that now I can't imagine not giving it a shot at least once. His words made the tarpon and salmon dance before my eyes as I read them. To top it all off, he has an excellent recommended reading list at the end of the book. I got this copy from the library but I'll definitely be picking up a copy to keep if I can find one.
While a bit dated, this book will serve the novice fly angler well. It's a quick read and offers a number of additional titles in the last chapter for you to expand your own fishing library.
