Take your adventures into the far future of the Star Wars universe.
The Empire rules the galaxy once more, this time under the control of the vile Darth Krayt, and resistance is crushed under the heels of Sith overlords. The Jedi are scattered and devastated, with only a handful remaining to resist the tyranny of the Sith. The Galactic Alliance fleet is but a shadow of its former self, struggling to stay hidden while engaging in hit-and-run attacks against the Empire.
This is the Legacy Era, set 130 years after the Battle of Yavin, gives players and Gamemasers the freedom to shape the Star Wars galaxy during an exciting period when no one is safe from evil. Players can join the struggling Galactic Alliance fleet, or fight for Roan Fel's Empire-in-exile. This book contains everything players need to create heroes that fit perfectly into the Legacy Era, while Gamemasters will find the book filled with allies, antagonists, starships, and plot hooks to create exciting adventures against the backdrop of a galaxy ruled by the Sith.
I don't play RPGs, so I can't in good faith give this a rating. Rather, I'm here for the "fluff", the storytelling and lore aspects it adds to the Legacy setting.
In that regard, this is a solid read. A good way to read up on where the series was c. early 2009 framed, as far as I can tell, with an overarching theme of "legacy". The character bios are mostly well met, though at some points you could tell that it wasn't Ostrander/Duursema writing - things like Jariah Syn being described as a lot more loner-ish than what the comic shows and implies. On the other hand, there are some, ah, clarifications here (Konrad Rus...) that will hopefully find their way into the story proper.
I do wish there had been more art of the setting, or rather, specific narrative moments. Perhaps a new look at the failure of the Ossus Project, or any of the other implied or glossed over scenes from the comic. Seeing characters like Cade or Jariah in a non-Duursema artstyle is wild, though, and worth the price of admission.
So overall a solid non-fiction supplement to have, even for the non-gamer. In fact, reading through this, imagining a campaign of my own, makes me want to maybe get a group together...
I last read this in 2020 - weird. Feels like yesterday. Life goes so fast.
The Legacy era is still one of my favourite eras of Star Wars (however edgy it is at times). Yet it feels like the holy grail of campaigns for me, one that I will probably never, ever get the chance to run. Finding a group to play Star Wars feels hard enough with the amount of time I have on offer - but explaining that I'd like to run a Star Wars campaign set over one hundred years after Return of the Jedi? That feels impossible. Maybe in five more years, I'll be in a position to do so.
Anyway - the book is still incredible. It functions as an encylopedia for the era, so it's valuable in that way, but it also adds a variety of options for probably my favourite Star Wars RPG system, including era-relevant prestige classes like the Imperial Knight, and how to make legacy player characters (like a descendant of Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, or even Aayla Secura).
It's a blast to envision a campaign in this era given the possibilities. The Galactic Alliance is on the run but with a strong fleet and experienced soldiers, and their attempts at fighting back are working. Democracy is on the rise. The Empire is split between the continuation of Palpatine's Galactic Empire (now long-since reformed by the Fel family) and the One Sith, who hold Coruscant in their iron fists. It is incredible to imagine how the players can change the galaxy. Given that this is the Star Wars era set furthest in the future after the Original Trilogy, it would be the first to forge new ground. The players could do things that forge new and unknown futures for their Star Wars galaxy. Even better is imagining a campaign that runs for years, going through different eras, different characters, and finally culminating in a campaign that finishes in the Legacy Era. It's a dream of mine to run something like this one day, and maybe one day I'll have the time, energy, and people to do so.
If you like this era: get this book, if you feel comfortable splashing out the crazy prices it goes for these days.
-- 2020 Review My favourite Star Wars supplement that I've read so far. It helps that I'm a huge fan of the Legacy era of the EU, but it has so much awesome content - stats for all the major characters, information on the organization of the Galactic Alliance, the Jedi Remnants, Fel's Empire, Krayt's Sith Empire... you also get the stats to play as Yuuzhan Vong, Chiss, and other cool species. Overall, 100% worth it. I know it's expensive these days, but if you are interested in the era, it's probably also the closest thing you are going to get to an encyclopedia for the era. Great collector's item, and just a lovely book to flip through.
A good solid supplement. My only complaint are the rules mechanics on the Legacy destiny. Temporary benefits and nothing permanent sucks if you ask me. At any rate, I think it would be great fun to play a character with a legacy (an Imperial knight descended from Jag and Jaina).
