Wow! I’m almost at a loss of what to say because I’m worried I won’t do this book justice. I have wanted to read this book for a while. I had purchased it almost a year ago but never seemed to have enough time to read this. This is a large book and is almost three times the size many lesfic books normally are so I knew it was a time commitment. This was everything I love in a good fantasy book and I would give it 6 stars if I could.

While the author calls this a dark fantasy book, I actually feel it is more high fantasy with a mix of urban fantasy-romance. While there are some parts that are dark and violent, I find a lot of dark fantasy books to be depressing and this book is not depressing. Some parts are sad yes but many books have some sadness. In fact, I would say what this book really is, what this book is really about, is good old ROMANCE. This is a romance wrapped in a fantasy setting and I loved it. It’s funny but before I read this book I was reminded that this was a finalist to win a LAMBDA award this year. That is pretty impressive and when I finished this book I went to look up the finalists for best fantasy/spec-fic. But guess what? This book was not there. It was not sitting next to The Priory of the Orange Tree (but what a battle between these two books that would have been!) like I expected. Instead this book is sitting next to Jae, Ullrich, Hale and others for BEST ROMANCE! I could not help but smile because LAMBDA was right; call this whatever type of fantasy you want because what this really is, is an epic romance.

All that talk about awards and I didn’t even get to mention that this is Noon’s debut. That makes this book all the sweeter really. When you are reading a new author for the first time and you know you are reading something really special, that is just such a great feeling. Noon is extremely talented and not only is this the best fantasy book I have read in a while, it’s my favorite book I have read all year. It has been a long time since I have read a fantasy book where the heart really is the romance. This was sweet, steamy, and passionate and everything I want in my romances.

While this is a romance, don’t worry there is plenty of action to keep you entertained. The book does start a little slow, and there is traveling like in most fantasy books, but once the story gets going it is a grand adventure. This is a world where shifters and humans live. There is a portal to Earth so that is how humans have mixed into this shifter world. What that means is that there are animal shifters such as wolves, tigers, winged shifters and last but not least Dragons!! You put dragons in just about any book and the geek in me cannot wait to get her hands on it. I loved this world that Noon created. A mix of old and new and it worked well for me.

Not only was the world Noon created well done, but I loved the characters. Aurora is one of my favorite types. She is a complete badass, but with a heart of gold. I love characters like that and she is going on my favorite character list for sure. Her love interest is great too and while she is not the type of badass Aurora is, she has her strengths in her own way. Put the two characters together and they balanced out perfectly making a couple you have to root for.

If there was any doubt, I absolutely recommend this book. This book is epic in the best way possible. At almost 700 pages, you will get your monies worth and go on a grand adventure for love. I would especially recommend this to fans of Breaking Legacies and The One Who Eats Monsters. If you liked either of those books I think chances are very high you will love this too. While I was completely satisfied with the ending, I feel like Aurora’s life is just ready to start a new chapter. I sure hope Noon will consider another book in this world. This is currently available on Kindle Unlimited.

Fantasy books aren’t normally my cup of tea but I’m always willing to make exceptions, especially if there is a good romance. In this case, the love story is absolutely outstanding and at the forefront of the plot so much so that this should be considered in the romance more than the fantasy category. Don’t take my word for it, it won a Lambda Literary Award in Lesbian Romance competing against some of the heavyweights of the genre like Jae, M. Ullrich, and Erin Zak.

This isn’t a short book, at 642 pages, 20+ hours of audio, there is a lot of world-building, characters’ growth, chemistry buildup, romance, action, and adventure. Despite its extension, it keeps the reader/listener entertained, moved and at the edge of their seats throughout the whole story. It has the perfect balance between action, adventure, fantasy and romance.

The plot itself is at moments quite dark. I have to warn readers of possible triggers in the form of extreme violence and discussions of sexual abuse. I’m not a fan of these elements in a story but they were all necessary to the plot to show the characters’ temperaments and explain their actions completely.

The love story counterbalances the violence in the most beautiful and sensual way. At times it seems borrowed from ‘Beauty and the Beast’ in an opposites-attract love that defies all misconceptions and is able to see a person for who they are in essence. Aurora and Evie are so different but, at the same time, they are both loyal and caring. Their connection is believable and deep.

I’ve listened to the audiobook narrated by Abby Craden who did an incredible job. What a tour de force narration for this epic book. The voices, the chemistry, the action scenes, the emotional moments… Everything was perfect. Ms. Craden’s narration did true justice to this story. Due to the extension and quality of both the written word and the audio, this is great value for your money. 5+ stars.

Length 20 hours, 40 minutes.

It is rare when I love an audiobook so much that I need to sing (in this case, scream) its praises, but this is certainly one. Wow, Wow, WOW! This has it all - adventure, incredible world building and character development and a swoon-worthy, sexy romance. That's in addition to giving us one of the greatest characters in lesfic in Aurora - a gorgeous yet menacingly powerful shapeshifter huntress that has a heart of gold for those she loves. Aurora’s Angel by Emily Noon was a very ambitious fantasy romance that started with a bang. The scenes in the mine where beast shifter Aurora discovers and rescues captured avian Evie were very promising. It was when Evie started to travel with Aurora that the plot slowed down into many domestic scenes between the two. Too many domestic scenes.

I'm not entirely sure how to review this book, because I don't want to be too negative. But there are two main parts of the story that bothered me intensly.

First off: the book starts with a bang. Born of powerful Old Blood lines, her birth parents came from two different and battling apex predators. Her father kept her safe, loved and educated. They lived happily together in the woods. She destroys the despicable lab and sends all the trafficked shifter body parts flying off the rooftop. Holding tightly to Evie, they escape by flying away. Evie gets shot in the wing, but they manage to survive their uncontrolled descent. Evie lands hard and breaks the injured wing. After performing battlefield surgery and administering magic potions, Aurora offers to travel with Evie to get her back home.

Their magnificent journey together is filled with danger and romance. Aurora promises to get Evie back to her flock, but they obviously can't fly so they travel by ground and water. They meet friends, family, enemies and traitors. Amazing adventures and horrible dangers confront them along the way, but just as thrilling are the discoveries that they reveal to each other. Their connection grows quickly and their relationship takes center stage. Aurora fears that Evie will reject her if she sees her beast shifter. Evie does everything possible to overcome Aurora's resistance to intimacy and trust. I was thoroughly engaged by both aspects of this wonderful book. I could be wrong, but it seemed like there were some uber influences on the characters and storyline. This is the debut novel from Noon and it doesn't seem like there will any more books in this world or with these characters. Who doesn’t love a ripped shapeshifting butch tigress with hidden magical abilities and a sassy avian shapeshifter with wings of shimmery gold? Actually, I don’t want to know who doesn’t, because it would be a really short list.
Emily Noon built the fantasy world in Aurora’s Angel without the need to make us sit in a chair while we listen to a long-winded back story. So many fantasy novels spend the entire first chapter telling us all about some parchment with a map and the wood panelling in the Who doesn’t love a ripped shapeshifting butch tigress with hidden magical abilities and a sassy avian shapeshifter with wings of shimmery gold? Actually, I don’t want to know who doesn’t, because it would be a really short list.
Emily Noon built the fantasy world in Aurora’s Angel without the need to make us sit in a chair while we listen to a long-winded back story. So many fantasy novels spend the entire first chapter telling us all about some parchment with a map and the wood panelling in the room and the black lines on the map and the pipe that the person holding the map is smoking and that’s all you get for 3000 words. Here is some more good stuff: There are really intense baddies in this novel who commit unspeakable acts of violence. Emily describes the atrocities in enough detail to not become a Jeffrey Deaver novel, but ensures we appreciate the light and goodness that is Aurora and Evie and the people who support them. One of the aspects I liked the most was the humour. It is scattered throughout the novel at obvious points but also, surprisingly, at moments of tension where it’s used to deflect the stress of the event.
The dialogue becomes strangely formal and stilted in patches. It’s like Emily Noon lost the cadence of the conversations between the MCs, but then suddenly reset herself, and so we zip along beautifully again.
Oh my. It’s an entire laboratory of chemistry. It’s a romance, so, as readers, we know that the MCs are getting together eventually, and when they do, Aurora and Evie are incendiary.
In the first third of the book, there’s no heat. Except the mini campfires that Aurora creates each night. Then, it’s “I like you a lot, you like me a lot, we both like sex a lot…so?” and, well…gosh.
Thoroughly enjoyable. I fell into the world that Emily Noon created, and it was amazing to hang out with Aurora and Evie for a while. Although Aurora initially scared the crap out of me. She’s a shapeshifting tiger magical beast person, for God’s sake. Somewhat intimidating.

4.25 stars—Solid fantasy romance. Loved this world of shape shifters! I really appreciated Noon’s ability to drop subtle hints throughout the book that circle back to tie the whole story together. A little more than half of the book is spent chemistry building with a lot of dialogue. Not necessarily a bad thing, but there were times the conversation felt drawn out (and a bit forced), and when the book is 600+ pages long, you feel that. I don't recall much anymore - only that I loved the beginning, but it turned stale towards the middle and then really overstayed its welcome with lots of filler content in the last third of the book. The world building was decent for what actually was there and the characters were likable, I just wish it didn't have so much filler. I got bored before the book ended and I love long books the most, but not this time around.

What a journey.. or a trip or an adventure or whatever..

This is quite a long read for me but i enjoyed every bit of it. Shapeshifting fantasy that set in another world with a little mix of modern technology (came through a portal from human world).

I like how the story started where Aurora found Evie right away in a cutter cage. And their jouney pretty much begin from the start.

Right, so, I dove into this one based on favorable reviews, some of which (one of which?) questioned why the book got that 'dark fantasy' verbage.

The book involves a world that has magic, shifters, and stuff that is not Earth, but is linked, via portal, to another world that appears to be Earth. There, there's the setting set-up . .. or something. heh.

This super long book that actually took me 8 days to read stars two shifters. One being Aurora (remembering the name lead me to write this review while listening to a singer I'd, up to that point, not listened to before, a singer named Aurora).

Right, distracted myself. Aurora has spent her life hunting the killers of her father, and tracking down his body parts. She's learned that a friend has some information about where the last body part might be located, so she's in a mine to get some nice valuable rocks to give this friend. While in the mine, she hears a song sung by Avians to welcome the rising of the sun. Which is odd since it's night time, and the sound appears to be coming from within the mountain. Other sounds lead Aurora to decide to track down the singer. Whereupon she finds a 'Cutter's Den' (worded that way because I don't recall the exact phrase). A place wherein shifters get cut-up so their body parts can be sold off (and being shifters, and with shifter healing abilities, this 'cutting up' can take a while - this would be the dark fantasy part). Wolf shifters are saved. Then the other main character is found in a cage. They make a deal - Aurora will free them and lead them to the surface - the other would fly Aurora a short distance, and thereafter they'll go their separate ways.

Evie, the caged woman with wings (who sometimes gets called an angel, though isn't one, unlike the angel in that Penance book I referenced above) agrees. As many people have repeatedly stated in things I've read have stated "plans change at the moment of action" (or something like that).

One thing leads to another, Evie ends up with a broken wing, and Aurora agrees to help get Evie back to her people. Though first they need to go to the place Aurora had already been heading because there's a time-limit and stuff.

This was a deep, interesting, occasionally funny, good book. Oh, and the people in it are interested in, and think about sex (like, say: "It was like she was an adrenaline junkie and she’d just realized claiming Aurora for herself would be the biggest thrill ever. She couldn’t remember the last time she was this aroused. She had an intense urge to crush herself against Aurora’s body. She wanted to feel the power of that roar vibrate through her and then pull Aurora down on top of her and have wild sex.")

Right, another 'let's wait a week-plus to write a review' review.

There appears that there are plans for more stories set in this universe. I eagerly awaiting the appearance of said stories. And shall devour them like Aurora devouring bees ('Aurora’s jaw paused and she looked like a kid caught with her hand in a cookie jar. “But it stung me.”')

I wanted to like Aurora's Angel more but I was getting really bored with the story. Whenever I would stop reading it would take me forever to pick it back up again. Considering this is over 600 pages and I'm already bored at 10% it seems like it's best to just let this one go. I liked the idea behind the story though up to what I read I wasn't totally sure if this was a made-up world or the real world but I assume that would have become clearer. An epic adventure tale with romance at its core.

My first shape shifting book, and I dare say one that will be hard to compare to any other.

Evie (an Avian golden winged angel like creature) and Aurora (a tall strong tigeress shape shifter with something else of a more ancient magical bloodline that gets revealed later) are amazing leads and their travels in peril together and the connection they had was mesmerising.

Astonishing! The storyline is boom! I can say that all the characters in this book are very strong. The humorous dialogue and sarcasm really make me enjoy reading this book. I feel sorry because I finish reading it. How I wish this book doesn't have the last page. In a nutshell, "a great story starts with an interesting storyline".

Great read of a first time author. The pace really picks up in the last third of the book but Noon's writing paints a picture throughout. Real strength in world building and humour tucked in amongst darkness.

Some parts I really liked, and some not so much.

I am sucker fantasy, and I enjoyed Aurora's and Evie's dynamic a great deal. They are both strong and attractive characters in their own way. Evie's strong headed, get what I want attitude worked well to break Aurora's defenses and get to know her, and it was fun to read.

I felt like there is a lot to explore in the world that Noon has built such as rune magic, fantastic side characters that I'd love to know more about (like Aurora's mother), a ...more

I could stare at it all day.

Aurora's Angel is a debut novel by Emily Noon.
I have to say this is the book I've been looking for.
A fantasy novel, lesbian characters, adventure, shifters, sex. Yes!
And this almost delivers everything I wished it would be. It falls short in a few areas unfortunately but that doesn't negate the fact that is is a wonderful story. After 642 pages I still wanted more.

The adventure is secondary to the romance. The characters are complex and well written. The romance is slow burn, even though, it’s only a matter or days between the escape of the Cutter’s Den and the arrival at House Aquilar. Their is magic, danger, mystical beasts, and all types of shifters (tigers, avians, wolves, mer folk, and dragons oh my).
Evie is an Avain shifter, who stumbles upon I loved this book. I hope Emily Noon writes more, either within the universe of this book or something new. The adventure is secondary to the romance. The characters are complex and well written. The romance is slow burn, even though, it’s only a matter or days between the escape of the Cutter’s Den and the arrival at House Aquilar. Their is magic, danger, mystical beasts, and all types of shifters (tigers, avians, wolves, mer folk, and dragons oh my).
Evie is an Avain shifter, who stumbles upon a cutters den and is held captive. She is the daughter of Lord Augustine, and second in leadership of her Flock, the House of Aquilar. She is has been raised to lead and has never been far from her house’s tower, because of this she is naive in some of the ways of the world and to the darkness within. She also likes to talk things out and not let them sit and fester.
Aurora is an Old Blood Tigeress with many secrets. After a very traumatic abduction, as a young girl, in which she is forced to witness the murder of her father, she has been on journey of vengeance. She has a heart of gold and because of her unique DNA, her childhood has been filled with rejection.
She stubbles upon the cutters den and Evie while retrieving crystals for payment of her fathers, incisor, they last piece of his body that was stolen years ago. Aurora saves Evie and two wolf shifters, but in the process of escape one of Evie’s wings is injured and then broken. Aurora vows to get Evie home safely, but there are important things she has to do along the way, making the trip a slower one than Evie wishes.
During their travels the two grow closer than ever. Sharing secrets and feelings with one another. Upon completing her childhood oath, Aurora is ready for a new life. She wants family, a mate, and to find a place where she belongs and is accepted. She decides the only place she can find these things is in the human world. She plans to go there after returning Evie, safely, home.
Will the two of them be able to recognize and reach for the love between them before it’s too late? Will they get their happy ever after? There are many dangers and evils waiting to kill one or both of them. Will they survive? Can Evie truly love and accept every part of Aurora and all the secrets she holds?
