"Like me, Danielle Kartes realizes that food is the great connector--a conduit to bring people together around the table and create new memories." --Rachael Ray, for Rustic Joyful Food: My Heart's Table
As seen on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Rachael Ray Show, and Hallmark Home & Family
What makes a meal special? Certainly not the best cutlery, the most expensive ingredients, or the latest trends in cooking. It's about the people who made them for you and how they loved you.
Danielle Kartes grew up poor, though it never felt that way to her. She was privy to much as a child, but it wasn't until having her own children that she fully understood the effort made by her mother to their family comfortable during times of financial hardship. There was always food on their table and it was always delicious. Whether it was veggies from the family garden or "hamburger soup," Danielle learned from her mother not just to cook but to feed people.
There is a food Renaissance beginning. People are taking greater care in cooking again, figuring out how to eat better and how to get back to those days of slow-cooked, homegrown food while balancing a career and family. Rustic Joyful Food is about life and Generations is about the past that will always touch our present and continue to shape our future.
The recipes in this book are simple and delicious. They are meant to remind you how special family time is and how important memories made around food truly are. Inside you'll find:
Grandma Gloria's Oven-Fried Chicken Legs Mom's Swiss Steak Old-Scool Cracker Crumb Nuggets and Sauces Company Chicken (for when you have company!) Real Baked Potato Soup (cheesy potato goodness!) Curried Carrot Soup (sometimes, you need to step out!) Aunty Pat's Dilly Potatoes (like nostalgia and home) Off-the-Cob Street Corn with Chipotle and Feta (a new classic) Italian Sodas Egg Coffee Grandma Hawkins's Applesauce Bundt Cake Honey Butter Biscuit Strawberry Shortcake Mug Cakes, a.k.a. The Emotional Support Treat Sticky Toffee Pudding This cookbook is not meant to be taken word for word. Just like life, they are meant to be messy and beautifully your own. It is meant to feed your soul and nourish your heart. Break the binding, scribble in your own changes, and may this cookbook bring life and love to your home for generations to come.
I've never had a cookbook that could have been written by my grandmothers. There are so many wonderful childhood memories I have as I page through this cookbook. I've always seen a couple of recipes in most cookbooks I want to try but this is the first one that I am going to go page by page for each chapter. Great illustrations, easy to read recipes with most ingredients already in the pantry. Can't wait to gift my cousins with this wonderful cookbook that will have us all reliving our childhood. If you only buy one cookbook a year, make it this one. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
From Sourcebooks, I received a free e-book of Rustic Joyful Food Meant to Share by Danielle Kartes. I first checked out the table of contents. There I discovered recipes “For Friendship + Company,” “For Comfort + Family,” “For Fun + Littles,” “For Love,” “Sweets,” and “Drinks.”
On closer inspection of “For Comfort + Family,” I found several recipes of interest. Each section begins with an introduction to that section. By giving each section a personal introduction, Dnaielle Kartes makes the cook feel part of her family. The first recipe I tried was Chimichurri Chicken Meatballs with Herbed Greek Yogurt, Red Quinoa, and Green Beans. Each part of the recipe is clear and gives even the novice cook confidence. The Quick Creole Shrimp Etoufee with Butter Lettuce and Mushroom Salad also is a winner.
The book is full of colorful, enticing photographs of the completed recipes. The table settings themselves are also enticing.
Kartes pairs sides with main dishes, thus giving any cook a complete meal without having to search through different pages or other cookbooks to complement the main course.
“Fun + Littles” is a whole chapter on cooking with kids. When my boys were little, they often helped in the kitchen. As adults, they both continued cooking for themselves and sometimes for their dad and me. The recipes in this section are kid-friendly in taste and preparation.
Rustic Joyful Food Meant to Share is colorful and enticing. While I enjoy holding a cookbook in my hand and perusing the recipes, I found this ebook quite useful. I opened it on my iPad in the kitchen and found the recipes I wanted to try. I highly recommend Rustic Joyful Food Meant to Share!
Receiving the free book from Sourcebooks has not influenced my review.
I borrowed this book from the library because the cover looked delicious! After skimming all the pages, I really wasn’t tempted by any of the recipes. Either I already had a similar recipe for her recipe or the recipe itself seemed boring…only one kind of meat in a meat loaf? And 1C of ketchup in it to boot? No way! The book does have fabulous photos for each recipe, so if you are looking for a basic recipe cookbook, this would be a good one, its just not for me
Did I read this like an actual book front to back? Yes. Did I love every sentence? Yes. Need this one on my shelf! The recipes look so scrumptious but also relatively simple. Foods my family would actually eat. The stories that Danielle shared throughout the book are darling and brought tears to my eyes and so much warmth and many memories to my heart. Loved it!
This is hands down my favorite cookbook of all time. I use it weekly. The recipes are a delicious ode to the favorites you grew up with. Danielle's stories and intros into recipes are gems to be uncovered. I have made many recipes out of this book and all of them have been hits with my toddlers as well which isn't always easy. Danielle is down to earth, and meets the reader where they are at. I have a signed copy and I cherish it. The pages are now filled with splatters, oil stains, and little bits of this and that. The way every great cookbook should look. Thank you Danielle for this GIFT!
I received this book as an ARC from Sourcebooks in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
This book screamed Rustic style recipes and the photographs were so breathtaking and delicious that I could not wait to make some of these recipes such as braised short ribs with cauliflower mash, oven roasted tomato beef stew with cheddar cheese Polenta and most importantly Grandma's Applesauce Bundt. This book will bring you an easy comfort style menu that is rustic and full of family heirlooms, this book is for you. I can definitely see this book being a potential cooking demo book.
We will consider adding this title to our Cookbook collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
While much of this food sounded delicious, it didn't make me feel joyful and comforted like you believe it would. There were too many recipes that had unnecessary ingredients. However, the breakfast food and desserts were wonderful. I felt like I could see myself eating the food with my family on a Sunday morning or a cold evening around the fire. Just wish the rest made me feel as good as the stuffed shells and meatloaf sandwich. #Edelweiss
