Starting University is a practical, easy-to-read guide for students taking that exciting and/or scary leap to university in the UK.

It includes information about what to expect, how to prepare, what to take and how to deal with many of the new experiences they’ll be facing during their first year.

You'll find suggestions on essentials to pack, from bedding to first aid kits and basic kitchen implements, alongside advice on friendships and relationships, nights out and staying safe, food and laundry. From Freshers’ Week to study strategies and finances to mental health, it’s all here. And there’s a chapter for parents too.

It’s packed full of good advice, useful checklists and wise, witty and poignant comments from first year university students.

Very very thorough guide about everything you need to know for uni! Bit scary at the end with the ‘you will be sad lonely and homesick’ (that might be my fault though I went to visit my university on the same day I read that section so I was already a bit stressed!)

This was such a useful book, bought for our granddaughter. We were impressed with the thoroughness of the research and the practicality of sections like how to do laundry, all the useful lists, advice on how to handle your money and general guidance for getting through life as a fresher. It's sensible, practical and humorous. We'd recommend this book to anyone starting university, and it's handy for parents to read too.

I am impressed by the amount of research that has gone into this practical little book and by the in-depth knowledge of the Author. I am also impressed by the chapter for Parents, which has been very useful for me. My daughter is now in her second year at Uni and she is still referring to this guide (she has got the second edition). She says the checklists are very helpful and she finds the chapters on Money and on Friendships have been particularly useful for her.

If you have a teenager heading off to university, you need this book. The author has done all your thinking for you. When my son was going to Southampton for his first year, we used the checklists and advice to get organised. He was able to relax and concentrate on making friends when he started because he had everything he needed.

Highly recommend!

A very clear and legible guide to starting uni that has definitely made me less nervous to go, although it was a little repetitive at times.
