Love in Unlikely Places

When Emma leaves the security of her Amish community for a job in North Carolina, she finds herself navigating choices, circumstances, and a relationship that she never could have imagined. Follow as she struggles to reconcile her faith and her complicated feelings in this romance by bestselling Amish writer Linda Byler. Plenty of young men had noticed Emma's smooth auburn hair and her quick intellect, but at twenty-six years of age, she was still single, much to the bewilderment of her Amish community. "She's just too picky," they said, and she supposed they were right. Most did not know that she had been in love once, and had wound up brokenhearted. When she becomes a nanny for an English (non-Amish) family along the coast of North Carolina, her world opens up in exciting—and confusing—ways. Not only is she getting used to life outside the safety of her Amish culture in Pennsylvania, but she finds herself spending time with Ben, the handsome Amish man who is working as a contractor on the house next door to where she's staying. He is charming, outgoing, strong, and so bold in his affection for her!  When Emma is forced to leave North Carolina suddenly, she doesn't get a chance to say goodbye to Ben or to exchange phone numbers or addresses. She trusts that he will find her eventually, but as months go by with no word from him, she doesn't know what to make of the romance they had shared.  Emma's best friend Eva invites her to go on a camping trip and she agrees, only to discover Eva has schemed to set Emma up with Matt, a cousin who had long since left the Amish community and was living a faithless, wordly life. Annoyed and longing for Ben, she is relieved when Matt assures her he has no interest in dating her. He's nice enough, but he's not Ben, and besides, Emma would never date a man who had chosen to leave his parents, their faith, and their deeply held traditions. When eventually Emma returns to North Carolina to reunite with Ben, her world is shattered in a way she couldn't have imagined, and she is left to grapple with her faith, her future, and her complicated feelings. Why did God keep stringing her along, only to leave her broken again and again?

Love in Unlely Places is an unusual kind of an Amish book, a book that isn't just entertaining, but also touches upon more difficult questions.

When we first meet our protagonist Emma Beiler, she is reflecting on the artistic talent of one of her pupils and whether it is worth developping it at all. At 26, Emma is already considered a leftover blessing or in other words an old maid. Is she too picky? She wants to have that special feeling she experienced once when she fell in love with a smart, open-minded man, who later chose a quiet obedient girl, not as curious and opinionated as Emma. He chose to marry her younger sister. Emma was heartbroken and threw herself in work. Now, ten years later, she feels her life has become too repetitive and even her teaching is missing the joy and spark it once had. Should she settle and try to date of the available single men of her community? You can force yourself to like somebody and become a good supportive wife to them. Or should she trust that God is going to make her meet that special one who is going to make her hear beat faster? or is God's plan for her is to stay single and devote herself to her family, her nephews and her nieces? Emma's character and her dilemma is so relatable to any single woman whose relatives are beginning to question whether she will ever get married and whether her standards are too high.

Emma decides to change her life and starts by looking for a job outside her community. She gets an interview and is hired to be a nanny to two children aged two and six. As the family are going to have their summer holidays in their beach house in North Carolina, Emma's world is about to get dramatically expanded. The descriptions of the oceanfront, the sights, the smells are amazing. For Linda Byler nature is manifestation of God's love for humankind.

I really enjoyed reading about Emma's interactions with the children in the Englisher household. She is kind, respectful and patient. She knows her job is to observe, not impose her own ideas, but it becomes apparent very soon that the children would benefit from stricter boundaries, clearer guidelines and perhaps more genuine attention on the part of their parents. To Emma's great surprise, the family hired an Amish construction team to work on their house and this is how she meets charming, easy-going, well-spoken Ben, who wouldn't mind getting to know Emma better. She might be reserved and afraid of getting her hear broken again, but gradually Emma opens up to the possibility of having finally met somebody unlike the other single men in her community, somebody who is more informed, more worldly, and openly attracted to her.

When Emma's contract is terminated suddenly, she doesn't get a chance to say good-bye or exchange contact information with Ben. Still, he knows enough about her to be able to find her address and write to her and this though is something Emma is cherishing deep in her heart, as she is settling back to her farm life at home. As more and more days and weeks and months pass, Emma is facing now a different kind of dilemma: should she continue trusting that Ben is still in love with her and will turn up on her step and whisk her away or should she listen to her family and friends who are much more cautious?

Emma's friend Eva suggests a camping trip with her husband and their baby. They are also joined by Eva's cousin Matt who, although adopted and raised by an Amish family, later chose to live as an Englisher. Emma and Matt discover that they have a lot in common, but being Amish, her faith and traditions are very important to Emma, so she cannot permit herself get attracted to Matt. There is still hope for Ben, after all. And he does write and invite her back to North Carolina. Can anybody's love life get more complicated than that? Read the book and find out what future has in store for Emma.

Love in Unlikely Places is indeed an unusual kind of romance, with a heroine who is intelligent and well-informed in some ways, and desperately romantic and perhaps even naive in other ways. The book touches upon a variety of topics ranging from raising children, the use of technology, post-natal depression, adoption, politics, historical justice, and even global warming. There is romance, there are diffrent kinds of families, there are some wonderful friends who will tell you the truth and will stand by you, and there are fabulous descriptions of nature. Perhaps, the book is less light-hearted and straightforward than most books in this genre, but it has its core elements which for me are community, faith and trust in God's will and kindness.

Thank you to Edelweiss and Good Books for this fascinating ARC. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way.

I found this book quite fascinating!
To me, I think it's an unusual story about the Amish. One I quite wouldn't expect.
I did love it though because of its uniqueness.
I don't really want to say what it's about but there's a character in the book that I absolutely couldn't stand! She's a spoiled little brat who makes things hard on everyone else and Emma certainly has her work cut out for her with this kid. She's totally different than what Emma is used to. I guess you could call her a challenge.
I did not much care for the girl's parents either. Poor Emma!
I admired Emma a great deal. She certainly had her work but out for her. Emma is my heroine. I wish there were more people like her.
The scenery was certainly beautiful! I live by the ocean so I can imagine how Emma must have felt when she first seen it. The waves have a certain musical sound. Soothing, relaxing among many other things. I appreciate God's creation even it's now.
God works things to His own timing and Emma's couldn't have been more perfect.
I like to think that God brings us out of our comfort zone for a reason and it is a part of His plans for us as Emma soon discovers.
I love this beautiful story of life changing events that took place in this book.
I always look forward to Bylers stories and this one didn't disappoint.
I finished it in two days because I wanted to savor the story. I hated to say goodbye to Emma.
I highly recommend this book.
My thanks to Netgalley. I was NOT required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own.

Love in Unlikely Places by Linda Byler is a unique Amish novel. I thought the book was well-written with friendly main character. Emma Beiler is ready for a change. After spending the last ten years teaching and working her families produce fields in the summer, Emma wants to do something different. She is twenty-six, unmarried, and has yet to become baptized. Emma would like a chance to spready her wings. When she finds an ad for an English couple who need a nanny, Emma calls them to apply. She would get to spend the summer at the beach in North Carolina looking after two children age two and four. I could relate to Emma’s feelings regarding the ocean. It is calming and so peaceful. I enjoyed the author’s descriptive writing that perfectly captured the beach and the vast ocean including the smell (that salty tang in the air). I felt bad for Emma who was being taken advantage of by her employers. They pulled a bait and switch. Hired her as a nanny and then made her a housekeeper too. Emma is out of her comfort zone, but we see her adapting. I had to laugh as she tried to figure out the coffee machine. Emma also gets to see a different style of parenting. She is unprepared for the little girl’s temper tantrums and how the parents cater to the child. Everything happens for a reason as we see in Love in Unlikely Places and we must wait for God’s timing not our own. Emma learns some valuable life lessons in her journey and meets an incredible woman along the way. Emma pushed the boundaries thanks to her supportive parents (they are also worn out thanks to their ten children). Love in Unlikely Places is unlike other Amish books which I appreciated. It would be great if Linda Byler did a story featuring Dena Beiler, Emma’s younger sister. Love in Unlikely Places is a captivating and atypical Amish story with temper tantrum toddler, beautiful beach, a temperamental teen, a libidinous lady, and a matchmaking comrade.

Emma resigns from teaching school and leaves her Amish neighborhood to take a position of nanny to two children of an English couple. Living on the beach in their rental home while their house is being built next door. And surprise, Amish men are doing the construction and one of them is single and very handsome. And he seems interested in her. But are things what they seem? What happened to the sweet little girl she met initially? Can she keep her faith living in a completely English world?

Love in Unlikely Places is a different kind of Amish story. Which made it a very interesting read. As an Englisher reading this story, I wanted, at times, to tell Emma to watch out. Be careful. I cheered her on when she held firm about doing something else besides teaching. Knowing when it is time to move on is one thing. Actually doing it is quite another.

The pace of the story — quite good. There are characters you will like and, oh boy, a couple you won’t. The handling of the latter is nicely done. The portion of the book that occurs at the beach is what I would think someone who has never seen the ocean, never walked on the sand, never realized how fast one could sunburn … Linda Byler nailed it.

A different read and a quite enjoyable one. And not what you get in a typical Amish story. I’ll leave you to find out what “leftover blessings” are. It made me smile. Yes, I recommend Love in Unlikely Places.

Love in Unlikely Places is an Amish Romance novel written by Linda Byler. This is a remarkable story and the characters are very likeable. The storyline never stalls out but definitely keeps the readers interest. The cover will draw you into this story filled with love, family, and faith.

I enjoyed the character of Emma and my heart broke for all she suffers in the name of love. She gives up a ten year teaching job with her Amish community in search of something more exciting but what she finds is definitely devastating for her. When she gets a taste of the outside world completely separated from her loving family she finds herself longing for home. When she is turned on by her employer Emma returns home and a life that is typical until it isn't. The journey Emma takes in search of love and her perfect man is anything but uncomplicated. The author has done an amazing job telling this story.

I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.

Congratulations to Linda Byler for writing another inspiring story for her readers enjoyment.

I have read several of Linda Byler's books in the past & always love them and this book was no different. Even though this is an Amish book, the story line was somewhat non-traditional. Emma is an Amish girl who at the age of 26 decides to take a chance on employment outside the Amish world. She is single without marriage on the horizon so she gets a job as a nanny for a non-Amish couple who are spending the summer at the beach in North Carolina. The parents basically leave her in charge of the children while they are out doing their own things. Emma meets another Amish person, Ben, who is a contractor working in the same area at the same time. She finds herself spending a lot of time with Ben & becomes attracted to him. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Emma has to return home without being able to let Ben know. She doesn't hear from Ben & in the meantime, Emma's friend, sets up a camping trip with Emma & unbeknownst to Emma invites her friend, Matt, to go along in hopes that Emma & he will get together. Neither of them seem interested. In the meantime, Emma makes a trip back to NC & is devastated at what she finds.

As I mentioned earlier, the story line in this book is great and somewhat non-traditional for a typical Amish book but it held my interest because of that.

I would like to thank the publisher, Good Books & Net Galley for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book. This is my honest and unbiased opinion of the book.

Love in Unlikely Places is an Amish romance by author Linda Byler.

Twenty-six-year-old Emma Beiler turned in her resignation as a teacher. It seemed she was destined to be single for the rest of her life.

Love in Unlikely Places had my head spinning. One minute I felt I was reading a great novel the next it sounded too secular for me.

Emma Beiler took a job as a nanny near the ocean. At first, the children seemed to be well-mannered, however, young Annalise was a disobedient spoiled brat. Would Emma be able to handle the children throughout the summer?

I was living the tale vicariously through Emma. Although the setting was immersive, there were parts of the tale I felt uncomfortable with. The cover is welcoming, however, Love in Unlikely Places is quite a unique Amish tale.

I give Love in Unlikely Places 3*/5*

Another great book by Linda Byler. Emma is a Amish girl who is a nanny for a English couple in North Carolina. She meets a Amish young man who is a building contractor for the family she is working for. She spends time with Ben and has come to care for him. She gets sent home by the family unjustly and does not get to tell Ben or get his phone number or address. Emma's friend is trying to. make her happy and takes her on a camping trip, but doesn't tell her about Matt. Matt is their driver and also a cousin. Emma
of Emma's friend. She hopes he will fall for Emma and come back to his family and his faith. Emma convinces her friend to go to North Carolina to see Ben, and he treats her like no one special. She is devastated at what she finds there. Will Emma loose her faith? Will she change her feelings for Matt?. Thank you Net Galley for allowing me to read and review this book..

I really really liked this book.
This was the Amish book I have been wanting to read full of beauty and struggle and love for the Lord.
It wasn't a fluffy lighthearted book that just danced on the fringes of Amish life, it felt like an emersion into the culture.

I enjoyed the view through Emma's eyes of the sameness of her life, the smallness of it at the beginning but as the story continued, she learned how full her life was and more than that how huge the Lord is and that nothing else matters but a relationship with him.

I didn't want Matt for her at the beginning, yes, I have that annoying habit, to some, of reading the end first, and I loved Ben. Ben seemed perfect and I felt he truly loved her, but he was weak. Then Matt, oh, Matt...what a match made in Heaven.

If you're ready for a good book full of solid characters and passages of beauty this is the one for you. Enjoy, get lost...and found! God Bless.

A refreshing change from intense suspense I’ve been reading. I connected with the main character Emma. I felt for her and her situation in life. She had taught school for ten years and it had fulfilled her but now she was ready for a change. In the Amish world she was considered an “old maid” and way too picky. When the opportunity arises to be a nanny to a wealthy English family at a summer beach house she grabs at the chance. I could relate to the beach, which I love. Things change for Emma when she thinks she has found her true love. But has she? Many things happen and it takes all of them for Emma to find her special place in life. It was enjoyable to place myself beside her and escape for a short while. It was a quick read for me. One thing that fascinates me is the author was raised conservative Amish and writes all her novels by hand into a notebook. This was a personal purchase and I wrote my review of my own free will.

Not new to Christian Fiction but this was my first Amish fiction and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Purchased at Gordonville Book Store in Gordonville, PA during a trip to Amish country, I felt the desire to read something in tune with my trip. I will be sure to read more by this Amish author in the future.

This was an average book for it's type. The plot was very slow paced, and the writing left me feeling slightly frustrated. It was hard to stay in the book, so to speak. I think partly because the author got on a high horse a time or two about political/environmental stuff. But if Amish fiction is your thing, it's worth a try.

I enjoyed the story. Was not your typical Amish Romance as the main character was very much more interested in having and enjoying "worldly items" and had many dresses which I found interesting. I wasn't used to that from other titles I have read in the past. But overall an enjoyable title.

Good title

I pretty much liked the story but can't imagine falling in love so soon after meeting someone and going through the hurt just to fall in love again then have to remind myself-it's a book. I did like the ending though.

A wonderful book to read

I literally couldn’t put this book down. There was quite a few surprises and twist in this story that was so beautifully done. I really could read other books like this story line but there is only one author that could do it and that is Linda Byler.

Loved this story . A little different from most Amish fiction books I have read. Ms Byler tells this story and I seem to be in the place the story is about making it so interesting. Almost giving up on finding love, Emma puts her trust in God to find her her true love.

This is a good fit for readers who enjoy emotional, slow-paced stories about faith, love, and self-discovery, particularly those who appreciate Amish culture and are drawn to stories about strong-willed heroines navigating complex relationships and spiritual struggles.
