The Rat
A profoundly autistic boy is kidnapped for no apparent reason. Years later that same boy, now a highly trained operative for a covert government agency, sees something while on assignment that triggers a memory of his mother and his home. Without the benefit of being able to communicate verbally, he begins a perilous journey where he must navigate over 900 miles or terrain while avoiding capture.

I did not want The Rat to end! It was filled with suspense, action, and centered on the love of family. The author's attention to detail made the book come alive- I felt as though I knew the characters personally. I was alongside Andre Waters as he traveled across the US, as he threw each punch, and as he smoothly snuck through each destination. I highly recommend this book to all and I cannot wait (and am hoping for) a sequel!

I loved The Rat from start to finish. The book is written in a way that created a fast-moving picture in my head, as if I was watching the story unfold instead of just reading it. The action-packed story is enjoyable and suspenseful, and it is unique in the way it depends on the strengths and challenges the character experiences as a child with autism. I appreciated not only the action and intrigue in the plot lines of this story, but also the necessity of human connection and empathy that are central themes in this book. I’m excited to experience this book again and again!

Hooked from the start! Suspense set largely in area of Louisiana where live. Characters easy to follow too. Had trouble putting it down. Author did great job endearing his readers to this story. Hoping he’s got a sequel to follow.

A must read, outstanding thriller filled with intrigue and grace.
The Rat is an outstanding story of a 10 year old physically talented and autistic boy abducted and used by our government. How; overcoming challenges beyond imagination, he uses his skills and his heart to find his way home.Scary and intriguing The Rat is a must read for anyone who loves thrillers, anyone with disabilities or who have children with challenges or anyone who has a heart.
Merrill Wautlet, you make us all proud. How blessed your two boys are who have you as theirDad. Ready for book 2 please. This book is hard to put down and contrary-to Mr. Wautlets humility, he is an excellent writer. More books please.

What makes this book such a joy to read is the heart behind it. Through the fictional account of an abducted autistic child, the reader discovers the unquenchable love, pride and commitment of anyone who knows someone like "The Rat."
An unlikely hero, Andre defies odds and shatters stereotypes in this heart-pounding thriller. His story includes mystery, intrigue, government cover-ups and more as he's joined in his personal mission by a cast of characters I won't soon forget.
As someone who has lived throughout Mississippi and Louisiana for the majority of my life, I enjoyed the familiar roads and landmarks along the way. I hope to read the next chapter in Andre's life soon.
