When I was a kid, reading Elsie Dinsmore was just the thing that you were supposed to do.

So I picked up the first few books, desperately trying to like her. It was no use. I hated Elsie.

I quickly ditched her for Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys.

A story about a little girl and her unwavering faith. I appreciated Martha Finley's portrayal of a character who continually chose to do the right thing according to her conscience, even when everyone around her seemed to be pushing her in another direction. This series was full of lessons, and the story kept me eager to continue reading to the end. But...I can't say it was my favorite read. For those who yearn for a perfectly happy ending, it will leave you feeling a bit forelorn afterward. And, half way through each of Elsie's prolonged and painful dilemmas, I found myself skimming and skipping pages trying to get to the victorious end. The most disappointing thing to me, was that some of the characters didn't come to victorious endings even though I had been routing for them! So, all in all, I give it two stars. I wasn't sorry I read the books, but I probably wouldn't read them again.

My favorite childhood series, hands down. This is a beautifully portrayed story of a young girl who yearns for her father's love, a thing that seems forever out of reach. With a strong Christian morality, Elsie Dinsmore will be one of the first books I give my daughters to read!
