I read this as a sequel to The Apothecary's Curse. Though this could be read as a stand-alone book, I recommend reading the first book to acquaint yourself with the main characters and their relationships. Knowing what these characters have already been through forces us to suffer through their confusion and frustration along with them. The strength of the characters drives the intertwining stories of romance, historical fiction, fantasy and mythology and ultimately science fiction. Like Gaelan, ...more

The story of immortal apothecary Gaelen Erceldoune, so beautifully first told in 'The Apothecary's Curse," continues in Barbara Barnett's followup 'Alchemy of Glass.' Gaelen's discovery of a piece of glass in old friend Arthur Conan Doyle's journal propels him on a quest beyond the reaches of time. Taking place in multiple time periods in alternating chapters, we accompany Gaelen on a journey of love and loss, impossible diseases with questionable cures, and a bleak future world. Gaelen's only h ...more

A SIMPLE MAN'S REVIEW:

This book picks up where the last one left off, so why are people saying you can read it as a standalone book? I guess, technically, you could, but then again, you could read any book in a series in whatever order you want and get the gist of the story. But if you read this one before the The Apothecary's Curse, then you're only understanding half the story.

This book, like the last, is spent in both the past and present. There are two medical mysteries to move the story alo

I found this book creative and intriguing. I enjoyed the characters, the various story lines, and was pleasantly surprised about how the story lines came together at the end. My one critique is there seemed to be some holes in the characters' back stories. However, I just found out that this book is a sequel to The Apothecary's Curse. While I think Alchemy of Glass is good as a stand alone book, I feel like some of the information I'm craving to know would be answered if I had read the first boo ...more

I didn't read the previous book but I had no issues with this one even if I will surely read it to get a better understanding of the characters.
It's an excellent story, well written and highly entertaining, that kept me hooked till the end.
I loved how the author mixes different genres and how she wrote interesting and fleshed out characters.
It's an excellent read that I strongly recommend.
Many thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for this ARC, all opinions are mine
