“It's important to remember that feelings are like waves: they rise and rise and after a while, they drift away.”

I wasn't sure what to expect when signing up to read Matt's swirly world through Hidden Gems Books ARC Reviews for an honest review. So here it is... I really like the premise of this story but I just didn't love it. I mean it definitely has a lot of potential. I like the message that Madeleine Matthews is trying to deliver but it gets a little lost in translation. I read this to

Matt's Swirly World: Children's Book by Madeleine Matthews is a book to be shared by parents with their children. It is also a book for parents to help them traverse the pitfalls of tempers and tantrums. The book is beautifully illustrated and Madeleine has a good concept in theory. Unfortunately the story is a little to much for younger kids to take in. I read this to my friends little boy, and he loved the pictures but the story got lost in translation and he lost interest half way through. We ...more

Well written, thoughtful book. Illustrations are fabulous. It seemed at times to be aimed at very young children, but some concepts seemed to fit the ten year old child. I liked it, and would recommend. Great book to read with your child!

Matt’s Swirly World by Madeleine Matthews lept out at me when it showed up on my recommended book feed, as I have a three year old in my life who I am always on the lookout for great picture books for. I thought the title was catchy and the cover was cute- so I grabbed a copy and couldn’t wait to read it to him.
When we opened the book, I was impressed with the beautiful and colourful illustrations which just lept off the pages. Jack thought they were great too. He was pointing out the sl

Feelings are like waves; they rise and rise and after a while they drift away.

A resource to help your young children manage their feelings of anger, anxiety, frustration. My daughter is a parents as teacher where she helps parents deal with their children feelings. As parents, we need to teach children that these feelings are normal but they need help dealing with them. As parents, we can make big mistakes that can affect our children for a life time and ultimately affect our relationship with

This book provides a method to help young ones to learn how to handle tantrums and relief streets anxiety. Any parent or grandparent that has told a young child “no” has been a first hand witness to a tantrum. Developing young children don’t yet have the coping skills when they can’t do or get what they want.

This book provides a training option to help a young child reign in and control their tantrum. As a grandparent, looking for an option that will help put a halt to the “blow out” is an on-g

I read Matt's Swirly World to my 3.5 year old, and he seemed to enjoy it. It was a little over his head, but he liked the pictures. He loved pointing out the dragon and his emotions on each page. I can see it would be a good book to help slightly older kids identify their emotions. Matt feels disappointment and anger when he has to leave the park. But his mother tells a story of a dragon and fairy to help him understand his feelings. In a fun way, she teaches him ways to cope with the feelings t ...more

Matt's Swirly World: Children's Book by Madeleine Matthews ,I read this multiple times to my 18 month old son and my 6 year old nephew and each time my nephew says" his mom did what my mom does" I loved that he connected with a character. As for my son he’s still a bit little but he loves books so he liked the “story" .I love the message this story teaches children. I love, love the illustrations such z beautiful job. I received an advanced copy of this book in return for my review. This was a fun children’s book read. I plan to read it to my own children as well as my student’s at school. The illustrations and explanation of angry feelings were great using the analogy of a dragon. I think that my kids and students will relate to this as they love animals and fantasy. I really like that the book teaches using deep breaths to calm down. Thank you for creating this book that will be useful to teach young childr ...more

Matt's swirly world: Children's Book Helping Parents Raise Mindful Kids, Understand Tantrums and Relieve Stress, Anxiety by Madeleine Matthews is a book for children and their parents. Matt is having a rough day when it is time to leave the playground. His mom comes up with ways to help him instead of a temper tantrum. 5 out of 5 stars

Matt’s Swirly world is the first book that I have read by Ms. Matthews and it was adorable. I read this short story to my grandchildren and they where enchanted with this story.
We deal with tantrums from my granddaughters all the time, so this book helped me when it comes to her tantrums. I do know the reasons my granddaughter has been through a lot this year, so it really helped me.
I will read more of Ms. Matthews books to my grandchild

Matt's Swirly World: Children's Book by Madeleine Matthews. This book does have a great idea behind it. I found it easy to follow and enjoyed it. The illustrations were engaging and my nephew liked them, he also followed along nicely and liked the story. I’m glad I picked this book up for my nephew, we had fun reading it together and he took something away from it I believe. If you’re looking for a story that’s got a great lesson behind it also I definitely recommend this book. I’ll definitely b ...more

Helping Our Lil "Dragons" Learn

I read this for my daughter (7) tonight as a bedtime story. We talked about it afterward and she's in love with the metaphors in it and wants me to use the wording more similar, than our usual conversations. I believe her counselor (my daughter has adjustment disorder) would love it too, as well as how eager she is to read/use it! 😊

A good concept but a bit confusing as to who it is aimed it. Most really young children wouldn't understand as some of the language would be too advanced, maybe 7-9 yr olds but again not sure. The illustrating is fab.

Matt’s Swirly World is a book for both kids and parents to read together. It teaches some parents in certain situations how to calm a child in the middle of a tantrum and also teaches kids how to react and control anger issues.

The illustrations are well done and colorful. However, I felt that there could've been more to this, and perhaps simplified a bit more since it is geared at very young children. Some do well with "take a deep breath" and it'll be okay, but many (most?) children wouldn't just calm down that quickly. I do like the idea of comparing anger to a dragon as the smoky breath of a dragon is a good visualization for them to imagine while attempting to calm their own fires.

This is a good book but I feel it’s more for parents than children. I read it to my son and he loved the illustrations and did the breathing exercises in the book. It was a long book but it had a great message. I would recommend this book.

This was a nicely illustrated book about how a mom helps her son cope with disappointment and anger. I thought it was nicely done. However, my son didn't quite enjoy it!!

This book is definitely for children and parents alike.  At the moment my son is too young for this book. However when he is older I can help use this book as a tool for him to better understand his emotions and work through them in as healthy positive manner. Once again like the previous book of hers I read this one is beautifully illustrated and I cant wait to share it with my son.

I think this is a great way to explain and help a child focus on different ways to relax/calm down before or even after having a tantrum. Depending on the child this would help them, and also the parents also. I'll be keeping this all in mind when dealing with my 6 year old grandson

A colorful story about anger

This has beautiful illustrations and the story is amazing. However I could see it being read to kids in second and third grade. But also explained by a teacher at the same time. Because some of it is a little over their heads. However The underlying theme that if you breathe the anger will settle is really good and I think it should be practiced in classrooms. I really like the little boy Matt in his stories and I like the lessons that are learned.

This is a book that can help patents teach their children about a very difficult situation to deal with. Tantrums are very common in young children. This book gives and excellent explanation on anger, a feeling that is hard to understand and explain. The creative explanation and the calm way it was delivered was wonderfully done. I am sure this book will help may children get in touch with their feelings. Unfortunately, I can not comment on the illustrations because they did not come with the bo ...more

I have to say that I would give this a 5 star because of how great it is but it just goes over the heads of the kids I work with. The story is great for parents and the illustrations seem interesting to the kids so the idea is fabulous. I do not want to ever discourage a talented author like this one from adapting in the next. book!

Matt is having fun at the playground. When it’s time to go, he must deal with his feelings with his mother. Matt’s Swirly World has lovely illustrations in a story that will open discussions about big feelings.

I’m not sure about this book. The idea is good but… I think the words are not appropriated for small children. I don’t think they would understand half of the ideas. I had to read it twice to get the idea.
