The breakout stars of IDW's Sonic The Hedgehog ongoing springboard into their own mini-series! Tangle & Whisper couldn't be more different, but when an old foe of Whisper's targets them both for death, they'll have to learn to work together before he destroys everything they hold dear!

You wouldn't think Tangle & Whisper would work well together, given their personalities, but it turns out that they're exactly what each other need most. Tangle's over-exuberance balances Whisper's anxiety, it's the perfect introvert/extrovert relationship, and they both manage to learn something from each other as they try to stop Mimic, in the process revealing their backstories to the reader and giving us some more context as to why they are the way that they are. It's all very successful, especially given the real estate that's covered in just four issues.

Also included is Sonic The Hedgehog Annual 2019, which is a collection of shorter stories that's mostly just for padding, but it's nice to have it collected somewhere at least. Tangle & Whisper both show up too, so it's not entirely disconnected from the main feature.

The art on Sonic books often all bleeds into one, since it's a fairly simplistic world; the main book has four or so rotating teams, for example. Tangle & Whisper is all drawn by Evan Stanley however, so it's probably the most visually cohesive Sonic book that IDW have put out so far.

Tangle & Whisper's first solo adventure is a smashing success, and I hope we see more of them in both the main book and their own in the future.

When it comes to the modern Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, there are things people hate and people sticking to the classic series. But IDW's run shows how some of the big messes and bigger elements of the franchise can become more imaginative. Tangle and Whisper are actually customized avatars made into fully fledged characters. That's one of the biggest appeals to the Sonic franchise, people have ideas they can create and with the right direction can be made into something huge.

Tangle looks like one of those characters gamers would love to play as for her abilities revolving around her tail. Not to mention her bubbly personality can make up for some of the more dire parts of the franchise. Whisper meanwhile looks like she's ready to make more character developments. By giving elements from the Sonic Forces games better context there's a story to them and makes them memorable. A silent protagonist becomes an all-rounder looking for payback and wants friends after the battle. More importantly she wants to make more friends and keep them safe.

Finally there comes the introduction to this trade where characters and different parts of the world come into focus. There are some genuinely interesting parts that don't require the blue blur to be around and they can still be as entertaining. From the skunk duo of Rough & Tumble to the Babylon Rogues actually acting like thieves. Might appeal more to fans of the franchise but it's also a good place to start.

This is my first Sonic the Hedgehog comic. It’s about two characters in the Sonic universe: Tangle and Whisper. They encounter a villain, who is a former friend of Whisper. The problem is that this villain, Mimic, can transform into other people, including Sonic. They have to stay on their toes to figure out who is real and who is Mimic.

This graphic novel started out with some short comics about friendship. Each comic had a different set of friends, such as Tangle and Whisper or Sonic and Tails. They had to work together to battle robbers and get justice, or figure out how to build a garden together. These were cute stories to start of the graphic novel. Usually there are short comics at the end of a graphic novel, after the main story, so this one was unique since it started off with them.

It was really cute to see how the other characters idolized Sonic. Some of them even had a Sonic fan club. They liked to copy his racing style, including how he could turn into his ballform to race faster. I liked seeing how Sonic was a celebrity in his own world. It made the story more relatable, since people can be fans of Sonic in real life too.

This was a great graphic novel for fans of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Thank you IDW Publishing for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

'Sonic the Hedgehog: Tangle & Whisper' by Ian Flynn with art by Evan Stanley is about a series of characters I don't remember from the Sonic games I played, but that was a really long time ago.

While Sonic does make a few appearances as well as other characters, this book is mostly about Tangle, the energetic lemur, and Whisper, the quiet wolf who is against any kind of contact. Whisper is hunting down Sonic, but it turns out there is more to the story than that, and it ties in to a big past hurt that Whisper has. Can her friend Tangle help her out, or will Tangle just jeopardize things?

I was unfamiliar with these characters, but they are pretty interesting and I enjoyed the stories here. There are a few lighter story before the main one kicks in. The art is pretty good too. This would be a fun read for younger video game fans.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from IDW Publishing and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

Tangle is ready for some action and adventure of her own after experiencing the thrill of fighting bad guys with Sonic. When Sonic runs through town being chased by Tangle’s friend Whisper, her opportunity comes. Something isn’t right, and Tangle is going to help stop it.
I was confused at first because there are a few short comic strips with Sonic and friends before getting into the episode the title refers to. The story is fast-paced and exciting to read, giving readers more insight into these side characters, Tangle and Whisper. It’s a fun read with beloved characters, as long as you’re into Sonic.

Took me a bit to come around to Whisper but I like her more after reading this. Good to get some backstory for her.

It’s good

Yea I dont got much to say it’s a fun little adventure. Tangle is hyperactive and Whisper is the quite reserved one with a dark past. They work well together.

I will give a warning to parents of young kids that this book does hint at subjects like death, nothing graphic but in case you are getting it for your 6 year old to read because they like sonic maybe give it a quick over-read first.

I read this with my grandson who is an avid Sonic fan. He really enjoyed this story. The graphics are great and it is a fun read. Any Sonic the Hedgehog fan will completely enjoy this book.

Amazing story and character development

This story has an impact so big on the sonic the hedgehog storyline and it's great to see a little more history on tangle and whispers development throughout the story.

An important story that give context to one of the major emotional beats in the actual series. Also a couple a nice short little moments between other characters that were fine on their own, but Tangle and Whisper are rightfully the heart of this story.

Unexpectedly the best and most interesting story from the IDW run up to this point. Probably because the story is 99% comics original characters so they can actually do things with them. Bonus points for making Eggman scary & deadly. What I’m finding frustrating is how much it seems the creators are hamstrung from giving the characters any arcs or real threats or flaws because the comic is stupidly “in-canon” with the games which I never once viewed as having interconnected lore. By focusing on these secondary original characters, Flynn gives the story a sense of stakes and drama that the video game characters simply are not allowed to have. Evan Stanley is, I think, the best artist in this IDW Sonic stable, too.

A fantastic story that delves into two IDW comics exclusive characters. Not only are the two leads great (and two of my favourite characters of the entire series!), but the world itself feels so lived in. Things happen without Sonic's direct involvement, and it is to this story and character's credit that he is not missed here.

The artwork is nothing short of brilliant. Whisper's backstory is gripping and tragic. And a new antagonist is introduced, and I can't wait to see how he interacts with the larger cast.

Right, then there's the annual, which contains great mini stories for Tangle & Whisper, Silver & Blaze, and Rouge!

A nice little read that follows to of the newer characters and so far characters that were introduced in this comic series. Tangle and Whisper are not a bad duo as they do follow kind of a staple duo relationship with Tangle being the outspoken and energetic type character while Whisper is the quiet and nervous type character. They are ok and I do like they are trying to pull from all over the Sonic franchise as we get a return of the Babylon Rogues.

I loved Whisper from her very first appearance, and this story makes me appreciate her even more. I want so much more of her in everything. She’s just delightful and sad and good. Tangle is a great foil for her, too; they make a very sweet team. Also, not to be That Guy, but now I really want her and Shadow to have an adventure together. Just to get aaaall of that out in the open. I also think they would be a good team, although less “sweet” and more “terrifying.”

I enjoyed the short collection of stories that were happening at the same time as the Metal Virus arc. It truly brought more gravity to one of the best storylines I've read in modern comics.
Then there's the Tangle and Whisper friendship. I definitely shipped them in my head while reading this to my son, but their friendship is so sweet. Whisper's backstory feels so real and tragic. It was satisfying to see that side quest play out and the friendship thicken during that challenge.

ღ Tangle and Whisper’s relationship is absolutely beautiful, I honestly wasn’t expecting that dark of a backstory for poor Whisper, but I feel that her hate for Robotnik was justified.

And Shadow androids? Seriously? That’s so cool! We should definitely see those in future games :) ೃ࿐

This was a nice break in the action while reading the IDW Sonic series. Most of the stories in this collection are fairly simplistic and lack depth, but the overarching story of Tangle and Whisper was an emotional gut-punch, and very engaging.

Wow…just…wow. Absolutely my favorite Sonic comic so far in the IDW series. This mini-series was brutal, serious and not what I was expecting! Amazing story, great villain- and incredible writing!! This is an easy 5/5 stars!!

This was pretty good for a Sonic comic with all original characters. Some parts of it seemed like filler. And at the end of the day I don't really want or need a backstory for Whisper.
