Mighty Men: The Starter's Guide to Leading Your Family

Rate this book
Christian men so often find the task of family leadership so daunting, we withdraw from it into a distant uninvolvement--leaving the wife and children with the impression that we don't care enough to lead, or don't want to, when the heart of the problem often is, we're frightened of it. Or we don't want to admit that we lack the tools or how-to training. John Crotts has written this brief booklet, in hopes of providing something of a "starter kit" of tools for men who are reluctant to take the reins of spiritual leadership in their homes, and show them the path to imitating Christ in loving, servant leadership of those who are look to them!

Pretty good book on the practice of husbands/fathers being godly leaders of their families. Didn't quite hit the reliance on the Holy Spirit as I'd hoped it would. At one point (p. 29) he says the following:

We are grateful for His grace and mercy in spite of our failures. But don't you want to get to the end of your life and have God smile and say, "Well done!"?
It starts with you. (emphasis mine)

But otherwise, it gave some good practical advice. Just take it with a grain of...grace!

Great little book! I thought this guy did a fabulous job of synopsis on the this topic, and gave me some food for thought as well. Plus, I thought he did a good job of pointing people toward other resources. I would certainly recommend to other men.

Christian leadership can be daunting for many men in our society today. It's been misused through overbearing or passive men who either crush their families or don't lead at all. This book is short and concise, a starter kit for men who've been reluctant to lead or unsure of how to imitate Christ in loving, servant leadership.

🐾Chapter 1 The Importance of Spiritual Leadership
🐾Chapter 2 Character Counts (biblical requirements, heart, spiritual disciplines)
🐾Chapter 3 A Man of God (study on the attributes of God)
🐾Chapter 4 The Fight for Purity (standard, stakes, ammunition)
🐾Chapter 5 The Nuts and Bolts of Family Leadership (responsibility, provision, heart, teaching family, prayer, helping wife, disciplining kids)
🐾Chapter 6 Communication (importance, improvement)
🐾Chapter 7 Durability in Adversity (source of strife, trials, response)
🐾Digging Deeper (further resources)

🐝As a woman reading this book: This was a tremendously encouraging book that balances "be mighty men" with "be servants like Christ." It's a fearful thing to read a book on leadership and wonder where the author will go, but this was a great book!

I actually read the expanded edition which came out in Spring 2025.
Very helpful and concise guide which challenges men to step up to lead their families. Critically needed in our time when manhood and Biblical roles are being redefined.
