A young woman living in a rigid, puritanical society discovers dark powers within herself in this stunning, feminist fantasy debut.

In the lands of Bethel, where the Prophet’s word is law, Immanuelle Moore’s very existence is blasphemy. Her mother’s union with an outsider of a different race cast her once-proud family into disgrace, so Immanuelle does her best to worship

I tore through this book in a single day. It's the exact kind of witchy tale I've been looking for. The kind of achingly tense, terrifying atmosphere you get in horror with the "tear it all down" politics of today's best fantasy. Highly recommend!

Really really enjoyed this one. It was like a YA coming-of-power story, plus creeptacular witch lore, with patriarchy smashing, and a hint of a love story, all set in a The Village-esque super-religious society. There were a lot of moving parts that ultimately came together in an action-packed climactic end but at the same time raised questions of moral relativity, leadership, and sacrifice.

Definitely an author I'll keep my eye on.

This book is fantastic! I love a good witch story like the next person and this one is definitely going on my favorites list.

Set in a world reminiscent of Puritan America, but so much darker, the story follows Immanuelle whose life is defined by her late mother's actions. This leaves her in a life of isolation where she seeks solace in the quiet moments as a shepherdess, but yearns for answers to why her mother did what she did. A chance encounter leads her to her mother's journal filled with
