To be totally fair, it’s not *exactly* a five star for me. But only because I wanted more details and a bit more story out of it. But it’s important to note that this was made for little kids and keeping that in Mind it is one hundred percent perfect for them! Very sweet and simple while still keeping true to O’Neill’s style!

Great news: the author of The Tea Dragon Society has a picture book for little readers and it is ADORABLE. Dewdrop by Kay O'Neill is done in a graphic novel style and is fun for both kids and parents. When the pond has a sports day competition, Dewdrop the axolotl and all his friends sign up to participate or help but as the day approaches everyone is feeling anxiety that they will not be good enough. This is a cute story about supporting your friends and doing what is right for you that will certainly become a bedtime staple. I mean, look how cute this is:
9A69F1FE-91B6-4E57-8E96-3E395CA9A82A

Picture books are great, though often I find that the ones that really appeal to adults tend to be written more for them than the actual kid, and some that kids really enjoy become a bit much when you have to read it over and over again. This one fits right in the middle, being fun for everyone and having a great message to take to heart that doesn’t feel patronizing or over the child’s head. Plus it has O’Neill’s signature artwork that is cottagecore-esque coziness and warmth that is fun just to look at.

The story is very sweet, with Dewdrop going to all his friends and encouraging them to do their best. There is a great message of not worrying what other people think or do, doing what makes you happy and being proud of yourself for trying your best. Plus Dewdrop doing his cheerleading routine is cute. There are also extras at the back giving fun facts about the different animals seen in the story, like turtles and newts. The book is short enough, too, so when a child says "again!" at the end, it isn't a big amount of time to reread. This is a fun and colorful little story that is perfect for kids, my 2 year old demands it all the time!

“The only person I need to compete with is myself and try to do better than I did yesterday.”

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* 5 s t a r s *:・゚✧*:・゚✧

Katie O'Neill is my favourite graphic novel author and illustrator of all time, so when I heard she was coming out with a children's picture book, I was so excited! This story follows an axolotl and her friends as they prepare for and compete in their pond's very own sports fair. All of Dewdrop's friends are struggling with feelings of doubt and insecurity, but Dewdrop comes along and reminds them of what's really important. It is literally the sweetest book ever with the most beautiful illustrations to match.

This one is out April 7th, 2020! Thank you so much to netgalley and oni press for the review copy!

I love this book so much! I adore everything Katie O'Neill has ever written and this was no exception. I've been so excited for her to release a new picture book and I have a feeling that the cute art, bright colors, and sweet story will be really popular with kids (plus animal main characters are always A++). This was seriously just so precious and I need a copy for my shelves as soon as it comes out just to join my beloved Katie O'Neill collection!

Thank you so much to the publisher for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

oh my gosh this was absolutely adorable and wholesome! it's completely what you need to read if you're feeling a bit low; if you need a little reminder that giving your personal best is all you can do, that comparing yourself to other people will bring nothing. it's just such a pure story. even just the art style makes this story worth the read.

Each year my family reads all the Goodreads-award-nominated picture books. Dewdrop, written and illustrated by Katie O’Neill of The Tea Dragon Society fame, is book #16 (of 20) of 2020. It’s a book for a somewhat younger crowd. Dewdrop is an axolotl (look it up! Don’t depend on me for your knowledge all the time!) who at the time of the Sports Fair takes the role of encouraging her friends (all different creatures) to do their best, compete only with themselves, please yourself, not others. Dewdrop is a (male) cheerleader, the minnows cook, there’s a yellow-bellied slider (that’s a kind of turtle, dude!) and a newt that are Dewdrop’s main friends.

Lyra (13): 3 stars. I like the main message of supporting each other, and of course as a fan of Tea Dragon I love the art of Katie O’Neill, I just like Tea Dragon better.

Harry (15): 4 stars. I like the way Dad read it to me (LOL) and how all the friends got along so well. Fun!

Tara: 2 stars. Um. Ok. I guess the characters are kind of cute.

Dave: 3 stars. A little too young and sugary and cliched for me, but I like Katie O’Neill’s persistent environmental activism/teaching/species diversity. I’ll contradict myself a bit and say, okay, I (the grinch) do appreciate her positivity and her sweet style of digital artmaking, generally.

I was sent this book as an advance copy by the publisher via NetGalley for reviewing purposes, but all opinions are my own.

Aww this was adorable! It's a children's book about a sports fair where everyone does what they do best, whether it's competing, writing a song, cheerleading or making food for the animals who go to the fair.

As we all do, the characters get a bit discouraged in the process, wondering if they're good enough, but Dewdrop's encouragement helps them find the confidence in themselves once again.

It's a really cute book and the art is very good (if you've read Katie O'Neill's previous books you'll know), and it has a lovely message. I definitely recommend it as a gift for young child (or why not, for yourself too).

Annual Goodreads Choice Awards reading project: Read all the Picture Book nominees! (11 of 20)

Dewdrop the axolotl, an amphibious salamander known as the Mexican walking fish, is excited about the pond's sports fair. He plans to be a cheerleader at the event, but ends up doing his most important cheers beforehand as his friends all have doubts about whether or how they should participate.

I usually like Katie O'Neill's work, but this one is written down to the youngest crowd and was just too saccharine for me.

This was a really cute children's graphic novel with Katie O'Neill's usual very nice illustrations. It focuses on being your own best rather than comparing yourself with others and helping others.
I think it's a very good children's book to be gifted to a child.

The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I know this is a children book, but at this point I would read literally anything that Katie O'Neill writes/draws. I just love her stories and her drawing style so much, they are always so cute!
This story has a lovely axolotl as the main character and it was all so sweet! It talks about how sometimes people can feel self-doubt and how the help of friends can help to overcome it, it's such a good and important message and the execution was brilliant as only Katie O'Neill is able to do.

Dewdrop is such a sweet story which encourages you to never give up and it doesn't matter what others can do or think, it's what makes you happy. Compete with yourself for personal growth, don't compare yourself to others.

It also teaches you to help others, not so they can be what they are not so they can see the potential they already have. It's important to cheer your friends on.

Love the artwork and the message.

"The only person I need to compete with is myself, and try to do better than I did yesterday."

Kay O'Neill's art work is phenomenal as always. This graphic novel is intended for a significantly younger audience than their other ones, but it's still very much enjoyable for older readers as well. It's about the power of friendship, being supportive of other people, and believing in yourself, which is a wonderful and necessary message for every age group. This definitely cheered me up.

Katie O’Neill’s Dewdrop is a lovely picture book with adorable artwork and a simple but eternally applicable message.

It’s almost time for the pond’s yearly Sports Fair! Easy-going axolotl Dewdrop is working on his cheerleading routine while Newman the newt is preparing a song, Mia the turtle is entering the pebble-throwing contest and the three minnows will be taking care of the food. However, as the Sports Fair draws closer, Dewdrop’s friends begin to doubt themselves. It’s up to cheerleader Dewdrop to remind them of their achievements and abilities!

What a pure and gentle story! The plot is simple, unhurried, and easy-to-follow. I love the central themes of friendship, community, and kindness. The messages of believing in yourself, celebrating your own achievements and working at your own pace are also wonderful. The book’s universal and timeless values are perfectly inspirational for children but adults can definitely learn from Dewdrop. I know I did! I especially love that O’Neill deftly avoids being didactic or boring with her messages. Instead, her writing is sincere, moving, and authentic.

The book’s artwork is lovely and bright with soft and warm colours. I love the cute and wonderfully illustrated characters, especially adorably pink little Dewdrop. I just love that sweet cheerleading axolotl! He is such a cheerful, optimistic, and kind character that you can’t help but feel encouraged and happy too! All the other aquatic creatures are also super cute and memorable. I loved learning and growing along with them.

Dewdrop is a gentle and meaningful picture book with beautiful artwork and an enduring message. I love Katie O'Neill’s work and this book was just perfect. I can’t wait to see what she puts out next!

Dewdrop is Katie O'Neill's middle grade little graphic novel about an axolotl and their friends who prepare for a sport festival. It is amazing how Katie O'Neill manages to have such important themes is such a small amount of pages. Even as an adult, it was still nice to be reminded that you don't have to be the best one there is,you just have to be better than you were before and the only person you should compete with is yourself. And of course the cute and colorful art style made this book even more adorable. This would definitely be enjoyable for little kids and adults.

This little graphic novel about an axolotl is pretty cute. Dewdrop and his friends are excited for the sports fair. But as each gets ready to play their part--whether that's weightlifting, singing, or cooking--they experience doubts about their skills. It isn't until Dewdrop reminds them of what's really important that they find the courage to just do their best.

The story is very simple, and the book reads as though it's for very young children. Which is fine! Little kids will probably love the cute little critters, which are rendered in colourful settings that are easy on the eyes. I noticed a few issues with punctuation, which is perhaps forgivable given the graphic-novel format. (The typo "yesteray"... not so much.)

Overall, I think this a pretty decent book for kids with a nice message and appealing pictures. I've yet to read any of Katie O'Neill's longer works, but if Dewdrop is representative of her style, then I think I might enjoy them.

Thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for providing a digital ARC.

This book has been sent to me to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

What a beautiful, heart warming and heart melting story this is! My daughter adores Dewdrop and I've fallen in love with her precious selfless little heart too.

Dewdrop and her friends can't wait for sports day, but as it approaches, Dewdrops friends start doubting themselves and fearing what they do isn't good enough. Dewdrop takes time to visit each friend to help and support them and make them realise how special they are no matter who they are or what they do.
This book is so full of little hidden meanings and beautiful quotes that really do warm your heart.

More on Chill and read

Dewdrop is an adorable little axolotl living in the pond and having so many good friends! Soon, the pond’s sports fair is going to take place and Dewdrop is preparing his cheer leading routine as his task for the fair. But he is not the only one participating in the sports fair. His friends are as well. Mia is the weightlifting turtle, Newman is the musical newt and three minnows who love to cook and will provide for the fair.

Everyone is excited to be part of the fair and so is Dewdrop. His friends however get anxious as the day approaches. They put more pressure on themselves, trying to be the best. It is up to Dewdrop to remind them that it’s all about the journey and that they should be happy with what they can achieve and not overdo it trying to become better. They should go at their own pace and they will evolve at their own pace.

I very much enjoyed “The Tea Dragon Society” by Katie O’Neill so when I got this wonderful ARC from ONI Press I was super excited! I had every right to be, as this is a story that is again written and illustrated by the talented O’Neill. This time she creates a new world of adorable creatures around a pond. They are all so cute and so beautiful that capture the reader’s attention at once. My daughter loved the illustration and the story after I read it to her. She cannot read yet, but she likes to look at O’Neill’s stories, even if I’m not available to read them to her.

This story once again has some lessons to teach to the children. Dewdrop is the happy little axolotl that connects everyone in the pond. He is happy to prepare his routing for the fair, and in the meantime, during his free time he helps his friends. And this right here is one of those lessons. Try to help your friends and people around you if you can. Give to them and eventually you will get back. Give your help, your positive vibes, your time or just a good word to those that need it and some day, when you need help you will find it too. In addition, you might get something in return as a thank you, something you didn’t expected! Give, without asking for something in return, and if you do get, then it’ll be a great surprise!

Remember not to push yourself too much. Always try to become better, but do it at your own pace. You don’t need to copy other people. Only to become better for your sake. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. It won’t end up in your favor. The message is “be yourself and follow your own pace, you don’t need to be someone else”.

“Dewdrop” by Katie O’Neill is coming out in the US on April 7, 2020 by ONI Press in a Hardcover format. “Dewdrop” is available for order through Simon & Schuster. Till then you can enjoy her other stories!
