alright this one might take a while so strap yourselves in, grab a snack and a warm drink, plug in your headphones (i suggest carrie & lowell by sufjan stevens because thats what i was primarily listening to as i read this book) and let’s get started *cracks knuckles*

first i want to say i have been anxiously awaiting this book for, probably, half of my life. i first read the false prince in elementary school and reread it every year, multiple times. i am now a senior in high school for your refe

I really liked where the series ended, but I'm still super excited to see the author takes the characters. Hopefully it's as good as the first 3 in the series!

After you finish the last page, you just sit there for a bit, staring off into the nothingness, and you wonder. Was that it? Was that the ending? Is it really over? (No! It’s not over!) And all these questions are floating through your head, how, why, food(food is very important), when, and you're just in this state of awe( mostly because of books, but also because of food)because of the way the whole story ties together to unite in one ultimate ending. You're left reeling(I’m starving), not bec ...more

there's a fourth book? I don't know if I would say I'm excited or not or whether I will read it. But the Synopsis sounds intresting.

Edit: but honestly this book has the potential to be really good cause no offense to the other books. Since it's been awhile the Author has probably improved which gives me hope.

I loved The Ascendence Trilogy, but really The False Prince was my favorite. This one is right up there with it. So fun.

Jaron is BACK, people!

An enormous thank-you to Main Street Books in St. Charles for gifting me an ARC of this book, the fourth installment in one of my favorite series!

This will be a short, spoiler-free review, though I'll update it with spoilers once the book is published.

As a massive fan of the Ascendance Trilogy, delving into its expansion into the Ascendance Series was equal parts nervousness and excitement. After this trilogy, I read several of Jennifer Nielsen's other books as they came ou

Nonstop swashbuckling, treasure-hunting action with a huge does of "who is in charge here" vibes. A fantastic new chapter in The Ascendance Series. Nielsen has once again given us Jaron/Sage in a book that makes us want to root for him while shaking a little sense into him. Is older brother Darius alive? What does an obscure kingdom group want with Jaron and the rest of his support team? Who is the true king of Carthya? Will Jaron find answers in Belland? Journey with Jaron through the twists an ...more

Heavy duty fans of this series will want to see more of Jaron, but I don't have as many readers for this anymore so may pass. My fantasty readers have gone away from the Anglo-Germanic type tales in favor of the newer, multicultural ones being offered by imprints like Rick Riordan presents.

Ahhh! I've always wanted to be one of the first to review and mark a book read before anyone else! *sweet contented sigh*
Alas, I cannot give it a full review....yet. So I shall keep it simple.
This book takes place in between the ending of the war of the third book and the epilogue of the third book (which is a year later when Jaron and Imogen get married). I had thought it would be several years later but, no.
If you're looking for all your favorite characters to come back, then have no fear, th

I can't believe this! The possibility of seeing Jaron again made my heart thump. The last book was wrapped up perfectly and I couldn't ask for a better ending to the trilogy, BUT A FOURTH BOOK?!
This would surely mean there could be fifth and sixth! Ahhh...I'm so ready for this

This isn't my favorite in the series. Honestly, I think The False Prince will always be my favorite in the series because my mind was blown the entire time I was reading that. But this was sooooo good.

I was nervous bc it's always nerve-wracking when an author continues a series that was previously closed. Because a lot of times they have to mess with things that happened in the original series in order to make things happen in this series.

(view spoiler)
Hopefully this doesn’t end up like other series where the books stretch on and on and on...

This series a holds a special place in my heart cause it one of the first series my son who now 16 remembers listening to as an audiobook. He was hooked from the first book all the way to the last. We also had the great honor of meeting Jennifer in Kennewick Wa a few years back.

I had to do a whole re read for the series before i read the fourth one as it been awhile since i hung out with sage and refresher was due. This continuation of the story did not disappoint me at all. In fact it made me c

I received an ARC of this book and Y’ALL. I can’t wait for it to come out so that everyone else can enjoy it. wow. So amazing and captivating, per usual. An amazing way to continue the series. This entire series is GOLD. I finished The Captive Kingdom in 48 hours, meaning I literally couldn’t put it down. When I finished it, I was genuinely sad because it was over. Don’t you love books like that? Its going to be so hard to wait for the next one.
I read the other 3 Ascendence books in the series

I received an advance copy of this book and will likely buy the Hardcopy to match my set. Jennifer Nielsen does it again with her twisty hilarious adventurous storytelling. It is hard to write good sequels. It is hard to keep a character true to himself though he changes through a book series. And how much harder when we consider trying to follow up on the flawless (I don't use that word lightly) False Prince. Somehow, Nielsen has bottled lightning. She knows Sage so well, she can return to his ...more

The Captive Kingdom is the 4th book in the series but takes the reader back in the chronology to share an untold tale of Safe/Jaron’s journey. With his loyal friends at his side he battles a zealous Captain from a once thought extinct kingdom of conquering warriors. Some huge revelations are revealed along with action that takes you to the last page, still wanting more. Have been waiting for this books release for months and it doesn’t d not disappoint. It may be geared to a YA audience, but it’ ...more

Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the DRC!

Fast-paced, witty, and full of twists—everything you'd expect from an Ascendance Series book. If you liked the first three, you'll probably enjoy this next installment.

Jennifer lives at the base of a very tall mountain in Northern Utah with her husband, three children, and a naughty puppy. She loves the smell of rainy days, hot chocolate, and old books, preferably all at once. She is a former speech teacher, theater director, and enjoyed a brief but disastrous career as a door-to-door pollster. In her spare time, Jennifer tends to panic, wondering what she has f ...more
