Things I liked...
-CHARACTERIZATION!!!! I am pretty sure I will never stop screaming this, but Christina Benjamin is incredible at creating characters with depth and personality. I am not hesitant to say that I have never read novels with more successful characterization as Benjamin's books.
-The antagonist: This is related to characterization, but the author has this ability to make even the antagonists have depth and meaning behind their actions, no matter how sinister those reasons are. In multiple Benjamin books, I have actually felt emotions towards the "enemy" of the book, while still rooting for the main love interest. Alex is portrayed as a shallow, self-centered guy, and he probably is, be the reader also gets sparks of a different side of him. I would love to see a spin-off book about him with a full character arc!
-Friendship: I have been screaming for years about how there needs to be better representation of healthy friendships in Young Adult literature and I think Benjamin does this in her book with Lucy and Brooke. Their relationship is strong, and Lucy is always able to rely on Brooke for anything. My favorite parts to read were when they were sitting in their dorm, watching movies and hanging out, because it is so true to how friendships are when you are living together (trust me, my roommate became my best friend... I know how it is). Lucy and Brooke's relationship was also super realistic in the changes that occur when friends get into romantic relationships. There is a "bubble of tension" the forms because of the large amount of time spent with the significant other. It puts a strain on the relationship (I have experienced this one as well), but Lucy and Brooke were strong and able to overcome it.
-Insults: There are some pretty hilarious insults in the book, mainly thrown Alex's way by Brooke, and I wanted to point them out...
"douche-canoe"
"twat-waffle"
"crap-taco"
-Rom-com: I love how all the books in The Boyfriend series, by Christina Benjamin, read like a romance movie. It is a page-turner, with more drama unfolding on every page until the very last page. Each book I read in this series does this more successfully, with even more drama.

Things I did not like...
-Jaxon: I am going to be honest, Jaxon was not my favorite love interest I have read, and I am not sure if it is just my personal bias. I thought he was a little too aggressive, violent, and over-protective. I appreciate why he is like this, which is explained in the book, however, I was not a fan. Maybe it was the large number of times he called Lucy, "his girl," or the point where he said Lucy, "[wreaked] havoc on his possessive desires," but I was not into it. BUT... I am sure others enjoy reading those characters so, if you do, this is the book for you.
-How they act: The book is set on a group of high-school aged students, however, I did not see them act like highschoolers very often. I found it unrealistic how mature they acted, and with how much stuff they got away with. I know high-schoolers drink, however, they did it so casually, if that makes sense. Like, they would casually have wine and ice-cream nights or Alex casually grabbed a beer out of Lucy and Brooke's dorm refrigerator. From my experience, high-schoolers are always overly excited when they get to break the rules and drink, and it is usually in groups or at parties. I also found it unrealistic that, even at this private school, the student's dorms were not checked regularly. Even my college dorm was checked a couple times a year. There were alcohol and boys staying over and I doubt that would happen. Maybe... I don't know, correct me if I am wrong.
-Brooke and her Unicorn: This is something you won't understand unless you read the book, because I don't want to spoil anything, but I did not like this relationship AT ALL. I know they were both legal but the age thing just got to me.

Overall...
I think this novel follows in line with the rest of Christina Benjamin's writing of being incredibly well done. Her books always hold a lot more depth than other romances I have read, which makes them much more enjoyable. I wasn't able to give the book 4 or 5 stars because I was unable to get past the unlikable factors of the book. But, I would highly recommend this book to romance enthusiasts! It is emotional and swoon-worthy!

Lucy Adams has dated Alex Alvez pretty much forever. His parents are her legal guardians. They are the only family she's known since she was 7 years old. She's always thought that she was in love with him but deep down she knows they have grown apart, that he doesn't care for her like he should or treat her like she deserves. Now Alex is an internet sensation, a rising soccer star with an MLS career in his future and all she seems to be is his pretty, little good luck charm. Late for 'girlfriend duty' before Alex's soccer game, Lucy is involved in a near-deadly hit-and-run accident. Jaxon Bradburn, a new student witnesses the accident and rescues her, saving her life. Once he saves her he can't walk away and becomes a fixture by her side for her entire recovery. He becomes her everything. He makes her feel special, safe, cared for. The trouble is he isn't her boyfriend. But according to her best friend, he should be.

Magic 8 balls and unicorn hunts. Smalls and hero-boy. I am completely enchanted! Everyone who follows my reviews knows just how much I love this series. The Accidental Boyfriend is my new favorite! It's a simple love story but of course, nothing about love is simple. Complicated families, PTSD, teenage insecurities and hormones, friendships and relationships. This book has everything I could ask for. A good-looking boy who wants to protect and take care of everyone in his orbit; a beautiful, tiny, feisty girl; a jock-wad boyfriend; a nasty mean-girl who wants that boyfriend; a stand-up, loyal brother; a quirky best friend with a baseball bat. Every single detail, every description, every action seemed to be written specifically to elicit maximum feelings from me. I experienced a rainbow of emotions; anger, worry, frustration, hope, fear, amusement, elation. I teared up, I cheered, I groaned and moaned. I tensed up, I giggled, and I swooned. This book captured me from the beginning and a day later I am still caught up in its happy afterglow. Magic 8 ball, will the readers love Jaxon and Lucy like I do? Absolutely!

This book was fantastic. Lucy and Jaxson were made for each other. Hated Alex so much! Loved Brooke and her sass. So glad with the way everything went. Happy for sexy sergeant and Brooke too was so glad that happened. Really liked all of Jaxson's family in the book. Really a fantastic book. Would recommend to anyone that is looking for a great story line that really draws you in and doesn't let you go. Its a YA nothing sexual but a really fun book to read.

This book was soo goood....

***Spoilers thrown throughout this review***

When I first started this book, I already knew that I was going to like this book that I like where I can get into a book. Not wish it was over already, especially when it has more than 20 chapters.

As I was reading this book, I knew I wasn't going to like Alex, I wasn't going to like his parents either. Because for one, they didn't show up at all during Lucy's time in the hospital. You could tell they didn't even care about her, which shows at the end of the book when Jaxon and Alex got the fighting, and Alex got his ahh kicked back to his horrible parents. I'm a get into that after I have to say what I have to say about the accident.

I was glad that Jaxon was there for Lucy through her accident and recovery because lord knows Alex didn't even care until he saw that his place in Lucy's life was threatening. He also threatened her a couple of times. I thought she was stupid to even stay with him after he said those things and did things right in front of her.

He didn't even care about her being in an accident and leg being in a case couldn't walk without her crutches. Lord, I was to body slam in so hard that he wouldn't have known what hit him. This is fiction, may I add. But dang. I kept calling him a turd, which I called horrible people.

I was glad that Lucy had both Brooke and Jaxon. Without them shouldn't have anybody, I kept thinking that maybe Jaxon's uncle was going to take her in. But was glad she had the dorms that she could stay in and not go to Alex the douche parents' house after she got out of the hospital.

One thing I was glad about was when Lucy came to her senses about how horrible Alex was. She finally realizes that after she caught him with Trica or whatever that flick box name is. I was like it took her long enough to see he wasn't right for her.

Then on top of that, learning that his (Alex) parents had something to do with her dad going to jail was the icing on the cake. I was waiting for her to finally tell Jaxon, if not Jaxon, at least his brother Conner. I was glad it took Brooke to give Lucy a freaking push, which leads to Alex and his family getting what they deserved, and Lucy's dad finally getting out of jail. Plus, it's a good thing that Jaxon and Conner dad started getting himself together. Good thing too; because he was a mess.

Lucy has been dating Alex for a while now, even though he has cheated on her with a cheerleader once or twice. She has known him since they were both little and thinks that he is the one for her, but he is very controlling. While rushing to get to his soccer game from swimming practice, Lucy gets into a car accident and nearly dies. Jaxon, a boy still struggling to deal with the loss of his mother, saves her life. The two were thrown together by chance, and they will either come together or allow Alex to tear them apart.

This book was a teenage romance that, while fictional, was still relatable. It also goes against stereotypical teen romance novels. Usually, the girl and boy who have know each other since childhood will always end up together. This time, Alex has turned from a semi-sweet boy into a complete douchebag who hurts Lucy at every turn. Jaxon just entered Lucy’s life, but he helps her through the trauma of being in the accident without any ulterior motives.

One of my favorite characters was Brooke. She is superstitious and quirky, but she doesn’t really care about what people think about her. She also has her own story of a realistic teen romance gone wrong. I also loved how supportive she was of Lucy! They were truly amazing best friends.

The plot moves smoothly, but the book isn’t short like many contemporary romances. It was a satisfying length, giving the chance for there to be a lot of character development! The only time it even felt a little bit rushed was near the end. I can’t say too much, but Jaxon was in a situation and I just wasn’t sure how the situation ended. This didn’t bother me too much though.

Also, there was quite a bit of world-building. There was even a whole scene where Jaxon and Lucy travel to another part of California, thus helping me to understand their location even more. I loved reading the descriptions of the world that the two lived in!

Even though this was an advance copy of the book, I only noticed like one error in the entire thing, and it was formatting, not grammar. At this rate, the current copy is most likely flawless!

I would recommend this book to lovers of realistic contemporary YA fiction.

I received an advance copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.

Holy Ice cream and wine, Batman, I think I love Jaxon. I know, I love Lucy but I think I love Jaxon too. Brooke was also amazing. Uh, I can't pick a favorite character in this book! They are all so good, well most of them (looking at you Alex, you suck)

This author writes the cutest love stories! I get so wrapped up in them that I hurt when they hurt. When Lucy got her heart broken I hurt right along with her. And I think I can get behind that whole ice cream and wine thing. That sounds amazing. Don't worry Lucy I'm a lightweight too. Unless we're talking about sangrias, I can basically drink my body weight in those things. Also, I think Jaxon is wrong ice cream and wine are their own food groups.

Jaxon and Lucy were so adorable. I feel like I always say that about this authors couples but it's always true! Brooke and Conner were adorable too I just wish I could have seen more of them. Especially, Brooke, that girl was awesome and she's handy with a baseball bat.

Alex was terrible but well written. It was easy to hate him. However, it did make me want to just skip over any scenes with him in them but I didn't. I just rolled my eyes and scowled at him. Brooke said it best, he's a douche canoe and Lucy deserved better. Like Jaxon.

Unicorns, Harry Potter and a guy who literally sweeps you off your feet. What more could you want? Christina Benjamin has quickly become one of my favourite authors, and this is only the second book of hers I've read. She has an absolutely amazing way of just making you feel happy and warm all over through the whole thing - except for the teary bits, but they're good for me because then I'm not smiling like a loon for four or five hours straight; my face gets tired. The Accidental Boyfriend was brilliantly paced, had a great cast of characters and I loved the multi-POV. I just wished we could have heard from Connor :D I'd love to see inside that man's head. If you need something to put a smile on your face, a pep in your step, and a fuzzy warmth in your heart, give this book a go. God knows I needed it. Jaxon is the perfect romance hero and if you don't wish he looked at you the way he looks at Lucy by the end of it, I'd doubt we read the same story.

Christina Benjamin just keeps delivering stories that takes me by storm. The just keep getting better. Absolutely a well written story with lots of romance and thoughts for the reader to think about. I like she has put a lot of heart in this story.
It could be a real story so well is it written and described. The characters are relatable and likeable. They are well described and develops nicely through the story. All characters are amazingly described so you almost feel you know them.
A mix of pain, trust, relationship, friendship, youth problems, family issues and lots of emotional ups and downs.
To the end of the story it felt a bit rushed. Would have liked a little more depth to it.
Amazing read that I only can recommend to others.

OMG 6 STARS!!! NO, 10 STARS!!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My favorite book I’ve read in so so long!!! Maybe one of my favorite books ever!!! I love how caring and patient and sweet Jaxon is with Lucy and how he comforts and rescues her time after time 🥰🥰🥰 Brooke and Conner were also adorable and I wish I got to see more of them!!! I also wish I got to see Lucy and her father. I also wanted to know who the driver was! But I understand Jaxon and Lucy’s reasoning. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series but I just don’t think anything can top this one for me!!!🤭 I highly highly recommend!!!

I fell in love with Christina’s books when I read The Goodbye Boyfriend and I now I have another favorite of hers to add to my list. I loved this book so hard. Jaxon is one yummy hero. I loved Lucy too but there were times I just wanted to shake her. I understood her hesitation but am glad she woke up in time and went after Jaxon. I really got a kick out from Brooke. That girl is something else. I am so glad they found their unicorns! 🦄

Even after all the horrible stuff that Lucy and Jaxon went through I am so glad that they ended up together. And I would like to say that I loved the nicknames in this book, Smalla and Sergeant Sexy were my two favorite. I was over the moon when I learned the Conner and Brooke ended up together. Now if the girls each marry their guy they will be sisters legally. This book had some sad parts but it also had it's really good parts. I loved this book and recommend it for others.

Good reading material

I actually liked the book but man did it leave a lot of missing plots or great materials. I felt like it rushed there ending instead of writing out a scene with fear old dad and all that waiting for them too have sex in the back of a truck. A lot of missed opportunities but I still liked the characters

This was such a cute read! It was a little repetitive and had me wanting to stop hearing the narrator talk but I loved the struggles the main characters went through to realize what they meant to each other.

Two unsolved hit and runs. A mean girl who never suffers consequences. A dad who spent 10 years in prison for crimes he didn’t commit. That’s not my kind of book. It was all quite whiny too.

Lucy and Jaxon…Wow. They were just great. All the tragedy they had to endure at such a young age was sad. I'm glad that they found each other and were able to heal. This one was not only sweet but also held many sad and learning moments. I found myself wanting to wring Lucy's neck a few times but understood the predicament she was in. I also adored Brooke and think she needs her own book. All in all a good read.

Another good read in this series. I loved Brooke she was the coolest and weirdest best friend ever. I thought Jaxson was a sweetheart. It was nice that they both had each other to get through their messed up lives. I really HATED Alex. I was so glad that karma bit him and his family in the butt. Of course the best part was the end. I was happy for both couples.
