How To Write Great Lyrics: A structured approach to creating lyrics for contemporary music of all genres

Rate this book
Among the thousands of great songs that exist, in every possible style and genre, very few are lauded for their lyrics. This guide seeks to elevate the quality of lyrics to match the quality of the song. It offers a structured approach to writing lyrics, from overcoming writer's block to how to structure a song. It explores the lyrical components of the song, to include the theme, poetic construction, use of English, and song construction. Within those headings the book delves into the more important tools available to the lyricist, such as rhythm, rhyme, imagery, metaphor, and many others. It also addresses some of the pitfalls, like the cliché and the split infinitive.

This book is aimed at lyricists of all skill levels, from the beginner to the experienced songwriter. There is something in it for everyone.

My personal test of a good lyric is that it stands up well when separated from the music, or even better, without knowledge of the music. That is mainly what this book is intended to help you achieve.
