To her friends, high school senior Liza Yang is nearly perfect. Smart, kind, and pretty, she dreams big and never shies away from a challenge. But to her mom, Liza is anything but. Compared to her older sister Jeannie, Liza is stubborn, rebellious, and worst of all, determined to push back against all of Mrs. Yang's traditional values, especially when it comes to dating.

Going in, I actually didn't realize that this was a retelling of Pride and Prejudice, so that was a fun surprise! It's basically P&P meets GBBO, so this was absolutely up my aisle. It's not a super close retelling. There's some intention mixing of side stories that I thought worked for this story: (view spoiler) . This is a light, fun interpretation. It doesn't have the emotion

Let me start by saying I thought this book was super adorable. I enjoyed it and read it all in one sitting. It was entertaining and kept me engaged, and honestly made me a little hungry. I will say I wasn't a major fan of the mother/daughter relationship. This is of course completely a personal preference I understand the reason for it being part of the story. I just di ...more

“A TASTE FOR LOVE by Jennifer Yen, a YA baking-themed rom-com starring a Taiwanese-American girl that’s perfect for GBBO fans!”
Some general thoughts for now after finishing:
I loved reading this book!! It gave a lot of good laughs, and the romance was so sweet. There were fun parallels with Pride and Prejudice—I also loooove enemies-to-lovers—and the GBBO element is predominant and truly is for the fans. The food descriptions are mouth watering!! I wish I could actually visit the bakery.

Just prepare yourself with a full stomach because the mere mention of her mom's delectable veggie baozi and her dad's sesame chicken left my stomach wanting more.
I wanted to love this story. I enjoy books that prides themself with immersing the reader in Asian cultures. Between the simple additions like food or traditions specific to their culture to using phrases or words from the native tongue, it opens up the reader to that part of the world. Overall I genuinely enjoyed this book! I enjoyed the concept of the book and felt like it was executed perfectly. I love a good rom-com especially when baking is involved. I would recommend this to the age group of 14-16 year olds as it is light and fun. Without spoilers, all of the couples were absolutely adorable and I enjoyed their storylines.

This was a really cute concept, but parts of it seemed really forced and rushed. I think I would have liked this better if it wasn't inspired by Pride and Prejudice - the plot points I liked the least were the ones that seemed to be trying to keep it in like with the P&P plot. I did like the characters and especially the friendship between Liza and Grace. Not a ton of chemistry in either of the main romances, unfortunately.

I appreciate the book for it's voice--one we don't quite get to read often enough. However, I felt the romance lacked chemistry. Loved all the baking references...I'm now hungry and wishing there was Yin and Yang near me.

a pride and prejudice retelling with asian family shenanigans?? a must-read.

There are probably infinite ways to retell Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, and half the fun is seeing beloved characters recast and reset. Liza is the younger daughter in a Taiwanese immigrant family who have made a place for themselves in Houston running a family restaurant and bakery. She’s exasperated by her mother’s strictness and blatant attempts to set her up with a nice Asian boy, and Liza feels frustrated in her desire to pursue baking , since her parents want her to go to college to

I was looking for a light, fluffy romance and I devoured this one in a day. It was so much fun reading about all these great Asian desserts and the baking competition that Liza helped her mom model after The Great British Baking Show. Yen also did a great job introducing the characters and I really believed that Mrs. Yang was enough of a meddler to sabotage her own baking show in order to set Liza up with someone. I was laughing out loud as the contestants were introduced!

3.5 rounded down, received an eARC from Penguin Teen. This was really cute, and exactly what I needed to get out of my slump. I really loved Liza, and honestly I’d really like to try all of these recipes stat. Normally I hate an overload of descriptions of food, and typically get bored when it’s described to me in such detail, and it definitely lagged at times during those parts, but overall it was pretty enjoyable. It definitely should be a movie so we can all see the delicious creations. My pr

I really liked the concept of this book, and the characters were adorable. The story line was nice with potential to be so fun. For me though, this book fell kind of flat, the character development wasn't there like I had hoped. And the book was fine, just seemed to lag at times. It seemed that sometimes the story got stuck on off moments, and didn't keep it's flow to keep the reader invested. Sometimes the side moments seemed to take so long rather than getting to the meat of the story. It was
