A little extract from the book that I personally liked

She remembered the day clearly when their vicar charged into the kitchen without invitation, slamming the scullery door behind him. He walked straight towards her, looking deeply troubled, staring briefly before turning towards the hearth. He reached for his bright red handkerchief and blew his nose, loudly, before wiping his eyes, as he rested one hand on the mantelpiece, staring into the flames. She was perplexed as she realised something

It's only recently that I've started reading historical fiction. I studied History as a GCSE and A-Level, so I've always been fascinated with history. But, what I studied and learnt is basically just a lot of facts and figures and lots and lots of dates. The deeper knowledge and humanity behind some of the atrocities were touched upon but not to a huge extent. I've read a few books now which have the Great War as a central setting to the plotline, but the detail of the war is very minimal.

I liked this book. I was drawn to this book due to the time period. I like military themed books. What I really appreciated was the fact that the main character was a female. It is not always the case in these types of books.

The female "Ed" was the star of the book. Her brother took a more background seat in the story. While, I did enjoy reading this book; I did find that it moved at a slow pace. More slowly than I would have liked. Almost the first half was about Ed and Ed just getting used to

I was intrigued by how the author would follow through with this story of a sister taking her brother’s place in the war. But John Kimbrey does this just fine. In Her Sights is a well written novel with lots of historical detail. It’s pretty unusual to have a female lead in a military novel – I like it!
