Katy Kramer Cozy Mysteries #1

The Case of the Wayward Witch

Rate this book
Witches are supposed to be the bad guys, right?

In the Kramer family, everyone is a witch hunter – well, everyone except the women. But with Uncle Faster out of action, and a boyfriend-killing witch on the loose, it might finally be Katy’s time to shine.

Going deep undercover at a necromancy supply store seems like a terrifying plan, but Katy soon discovers that her new friends and neighbours aren’t quite as evil as she was led to believe. She begins to suspect that she might be tracking the wrong witch, after all.

Will Katy discover the real killer in time? And will she prove, once and for all, that women are up to the job?

In the latest tale from A.A. Albright, you’ll meet the feisty Katy Kramer, a wizard-turned-dog called Hamish, a sarcastic cat called Cleo, and a whole new cast of characters. A few old favourites might also pop in to say hello…

This is the start of the third series within Albright’s magical world, this time seen through a (human) witch hunter’s eyes. Just like always, mayhem and hilarity ensues.

There’s a new cast of characters to fall in love with (HAMISH!) as well as some cameos of old favourites.

Seeing the world through Katy’s perspective was really fun and the mystery was as good as Albright always writes.

Fun read

A very good unusual storyline filled with madcap engaging characters and lots of humor, magic, and snark with twists and turns to keep you turning pages. Follow the heroine of this tale, a burgeoning incompetent witch hunter as she bumbles her way around her newly discovered magical world. A good fun read well worth a look, Baz.

Meh

I was disappointed in this book, it wasn't what I expected at all. I don't recommend it. Characters seem ok.

I found this one to be a nice distraction from the chaos that is my life these days. Having a puppy with cancer is a daunting and exhausting emotional journey I wish no one had to endure, but that is the one I find myself traveling these days.

This book allowed me to set that aside for a little bit and for that I'm thankful. I don't think anyone will ever pick up a paranormal cozy and expect great literature, so I didn't exactly expect anything other than the distraction I was seeking. This delivered!

There were a couple of times I found myself saying "Just get ON with it already!" while reading, but I think that was more me than the book. I did find it a bit jarring that I had that experience and then the book ending felt so rushed. It's kind of odd, but not terrible, so I cut the author some slack. At least there was an actual ending. I HATE cliffhangers in books and it seems to be a bit of a trend these days, so when I find a book that actually gives me an ending, I'm happy about that!

Will I read more in this series or from this author? Most likely!! I hope future books don't feel as rushed as this one did at the conclusion.

This is a cozy book to read...

Katy quickly learns that she is a witch hunter and is introduced to a whole world within the world she thought existed. However, her uncle and mentor turns out to have a very warped view of witches and supernaturals. Katy embarks on an adventure that quickly becomes a murder mystery mystery with plenty of suspects. The story nicely brings Katy’s new world to life while we get to know Katy and her new friends.

There is light humour throughout this story as Katy & her newfound 'friend's track down a serial killer. My favourite character in this book is Hamish a talking dog that wears a red wizard's hat. A light-hearted book to wile away the stresses of the day.

The book begins a series and opens a lot of future story arcs. It is a complete story with a clear finish. Definitely worth the time to read.

A Fun Read

Katy is a young woman who hasn't found here calling. Then her uncle returns to town and needs her help. He has two broken legs so he needs Katy to do some leg work in his P.I. Business. But Katy learns her uncle is no typical P.I. He tracks and kills witches. Thankfully Katy is a lot brighter than her very old fashioned uncle. But there is a murderer out there, a serial killer. And Katy is going to find out where the suspected murderer is. This was a fun book. Usually first in series is slow due to character and world building. Not so in this book because the characters and the new supernatural world Katy is exposed to are fascinating. Never a dull moment in this book. The characters made the story awesome. Loved it.

A Nice Mystery and Introduction to Witch Hunters

Katy quickly learns that she is a witch hunter and is introduced to a whole world within the world she thought existed. However, her uncle and mentor turns out to have a very warped view of witches and supernaturals. Katy embarks on an adventure that quickly becomes a murder mystery mystery with plenty of suspects.

The story nicely brings Katy’s new world to life while we get to know Katy and her new friends. She seems to stumble at times but is good at being a detective.

The book begins a series and opens a lot of future story arcs. It is a complete story with a clear finish.

Definitely worth the time to read.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot)

How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see 3* differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Cute book

Katy Kramer’s Uncle Faster is a witch hunter with a couple of broken legs. Faster believes that women cannot be witch hunters but Katy proves that theory wrong and goes undercover to help Faster find a witch who is murdering her ex boyfriends. With a cast of characters that includes a cat familiar, a wizard turned dog, and a necromancer how could you not enjoy the first in this series. Cute cozy read that will make you giggle in spots and question your theories in others. Highly recommend.

It was a decent read for me--3-1/2 Stars

I did end up liking this book. Which was surprising in a way --because I never got attached much to the main character, Katy.

There were enough other interesting characters in this Supernatural town to make up for the lack of depth on the Heroine, however. The plot was OK for a first in the series, as it sets up the scene for the new Detective agency for upcoming books. I'm hoping to get to know the Heroine better in the next installments.

A charming book.

This is a cozy book to read. Katy is a likeable witch hunter in a supernatural murder mystery. There is light humour throughout this story as Katy & her newfound 'friend's track down a serial killer. My favourite character in this book is Hamish a talking dog that wears a red wizard's hat. A light-hearted book to wile away the stresses of the day
The book cover is good too.👍

Wayward witch. Katy Kramer

This is the first book in this series that I have read. It’s is fairly well written with few grammatical errors. The story is week done and interesting. Katy has to help her uncle recuperate from having both legs broken. When she arrives she can read writing on a knife that was owned by her father. Who she discovers is a witch hunter. Funny she thought he hasn’t reached out to her in 20 years because of the boy band he joined!

Starts off a bit slow but once you dig your teeth into this it is a good read. About a young woman deserted by her father and a mother who doesn't have time for her and a grandfather who is a private detective. Nothing is as it appears to be and this young lady finds out her grandfather is a witch hunter and things get even crazier as the story continues. No further clues about the story will be given but I think all that believe in magic and witchcraft will enjoy the story!

Truth

Male dominance or simply female suppression? In any course it's lead, follow, but just get out of my way. So many empowered creatures in Ireland it's a wonder that year mortals are allowed, let alone given the illogical belief that they are the superior species. Bumbling through investigations is one way to learn reality, provide you don't die from the experience of course.
Cozy quick read, very enjoyable.

Enjoyable

A new character (creaure) is added to known supernatural beings--the witch hunter. Enter Katy Kramer, a girl whose uncle and aunt are hunters and come from a long line of hunters. She discovers more than she bargains for as she studies her aunt's journal and as she tries to solve her first case. There is plenty of humor in this book. The story is catching and fast-paced. The characters are humorous and witty. An enjoyable start to a series.

How thick can you get. ugh.
i barely made it through the first one. it reads and feels like it was written by a teenager.
Katy's supposed to be 25, more like 15
the ending was all rather convenient. endlessly bumbling around spouting stupid silly nonsense and all of a sudden ey presto e voila she's got it all figured out.

An enchanting mystery

Katy Kramer, the lead character has beliefs that were fed to her for years. The realizations she experiences are quite different.

With new friends and her own instincts she becomes her real self.

This is a great story. It leaves you wanting more.

The story started a little slow and I thought I'd be giving it a low rating; however, things picked up nicely and got to the point where I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I definitely want to read the next book in the series.
