I'm a huge sucker for all things historical and this story has surpassed my expectations because I was pulled into this story from the moment Gabrielle's was born. This author has done a fabulous job of portraying the emotions of each character and she also gave me vivid descriptions of Lord Guillomot's estate. Besides watching Gabrielle grow up, I got to tag along with Madeline and watch her grow into the woman she was meant to be and I truly enjoyed watching Gabrielle and Madeline's friendship ...more

As a Lesfic historical romance junkie, this book couldn't be more perfect. Two girls, from different parts of society befriended one another as they grew up together and eventually fell in love. - Easy 5 stars there.

However, they had to go through too many checkpoints on their way to HEA. That's good says you? Yea, I don't mind hurdles to strengthen up the relationship but it came every single time when their relationship progressed. One step forward, 7 steps back. Lost a couple of stars there.

'Donning The Beard’ is a beautifully written historical romance, set as the French Revolution begins to take hold. Madeline is a servant girl, brought to live in the household where her aunt works for the high-ranking nobleman Lord Guillemot. She becomes the trusted friend and confidante of the daughter of the house, Gabrielle. Their feelings for each other become more intense as the years go by, and come to a head when it is time for Gabrielle’s father to find her a husband. Neither know what ...more

Magnificent read!!!

The author truly provided a magnificent read. I, as a reader, was transported to another world where everything was questioned, such as love, feelings, and “unnatural” unions. Yet, everything appeared so very natural. The author’s capability of creating a story worth reading is very evident. Wow, is what comes to mind. Thank you for this story, thank for the lovely characters, thank you for an interesting plot.

Ms. Kafkalas is guaranteed to immerse you in a storyline that never quite conforms to the norm. Main characters Madeline (Alexandre) and Gabrielle captured my imagination from the start and supporting characters added well to the overall strength of the plot. I was easily transported from France to England caught up in the drama of a travelling company of actors, leaving sadness and turmoil behind. The romance is slow but true with angst, drama and worry so well woven that I read through the ...more

Donning the Beard is a magnificently written historical romance. It is set in France during the late 1700’s, just as political upheaval is consuming the French colonies. The story continues to unfold throughout the French Revolution, a time that is marked by periods of violence and political turmoil. This cataclysm eventually results in the overturn of the monarchy.

The Guillemot’s are of higher status and nobility. Gabrielle Guillemot’s father is a high ranking nobleman and her family estate is

Not a huge fan of historical novels, but I enjoyed this one a great deal. Perhaps my tastes are changing. Definitely recommend it.

This is one of those books I enjoyed more as it wen on than I did in the beginning. the entire story happens in snippets, it jumps time fairly quickly in the beginning to highlight significant moments between the two main characters. We see the feelings develope from early childhood this way. The jumps get smaller after the main characters confess their feelings and this is when I started enjoying it more.

I actually enjoyed all of the characters a great deal, both main and supporting ones.

I wanted to like this book as it is a combination of interesting genres - historical fiction with a lesbian twist. I did like it well enough but it had some unrealistic parts that made it hard for me to embrace it. Two young girls of different stations grow up together and fall in love as teenagers in France just before the Revolution. Madeline becomes Alexandre so that she can court her Gabrielle with the help of a cousin. She learns to use a sword and fight in a matter of weeks. She isn’t ...more
