Flame #3

Insanely Hot, Then Not

Rate this book
Known: They share some serious stranger on the train chemistry. Tonight, he’s finally taking her on a date.
Unknown: He’s just inherited billions and plans to tear up his deadbeat dad’s building for some closure. And she’s the single-mom he evicted from his building to make way for the bulldozer.
One question: What could go wrong?

Scarlett
I’ve got one rule as a single mom: My daughter comes first. So when it comes to romance, so far, I’ve limited myself to fantasies about the gorgeous green-eyed guy on the train. For months, he’s been the bright light in my otherwise dull work week. Our eyes meet, electricity jolts between us, my body goes to mush, and then we lose each other in the station and I’ve got enough to keep me going for the next twenty-four hours. He’s that hot. But it’s more than that. I swear we have a connection. But then one day he disappears.

Our big loft apartment in San Francisco is our happy place. It’s big and bright and sunny, and the one constant in Zoe’s life.

So when someone moves into the top two floors and starts making a racket that keeps us up all night, neither of us are happy. Next, I get a letter that we’ve got to move out because Mr. Big Bucks upstairs is making our apartment into a home gym. Hell no. After a couple of jumbo glasses of wine I slip a note under his door letting him know what I think of that.

Lachlan
It’s incredible, the way I can’t stop thinking about that curvy girl on the train with the sexy pixie hair. When my father dies and I have to go back to Australia to deal with all the legalities, it’s like she’s with me, providing the tenderness that he never did. I swear, she’s the only reason I got through all that. I spent years avoiding all the insecurities his abandonment created, but his death has ripped all that wide open. My friends say, I bet the two billion dollars he left you helps. And it does. A little.

When I get home and see her on the train, I know this is going to be the day I talk to her. It helps that she seems just as hot to see me as I am to see her after my month away. She agrees to go on a date with me that night. But when I realize she’s the tenant in my building whom I’ve just evicted, I know I’m in a whole lot of trouble.

*This is a full-length romance with a guaranteed HEA. The Flame Series books have some crossover characters but can be read in any order and have no cliffhangers.

Scarlett Miller lives with her three-year-old daughter Zooey. She has the hots for a complete stranger whom she has been seeing every day on her commute to work. In fact, both of them have been eyeing each other for close to a year. But suddenly he disappears. With her ex-landlord dead, she lives in fear of being evicted any day. The building she lives in is empty, and she doesn't want to create a stir by complaining about the racket that the new owner is making while renovating the place upstairs.

Lachlan Close was in Australia all this time, helping out his mother with some legal issues. It was only recently, after his father's death, that he took over the latter's vast business empire in America. Abandoned by his father at a young age, Lachlan has deep issues with him as he chose his ambition over his wife and child. He's working or at least trying to work through them, but when he comes to know about the compassion he supposedly showed to the beauty he has been eyeing for months, he can't quite reconcile the image he has of his father with the image the latter projected to his family.

The story played on the trope of a fated union, but many instances throughout the story felt too judgemental. And I so didn't like the stress on Australians. I mean, okay, I get it that they are great, and this, and that, but it was just so annoying the way it was narrated. It did seem to me like a tour guide droning on about the star attractions of a particular city (read: people).

Book Three of the Flame Series, this is narrated in the first-person dual perspective. Scarlett works as a photoshoot producer. Lachlan is a property developer. While there is something really cool about those name, their professions were barely touched upon, rather it was either his obsession with hating/questioning/doubting his dead father or her worry of what he will think if he knows she has a daughter and whether or not she's doing right by her little girl.

At thirty-two, Lachlan is successful beyond his wildest dreams. More so since he inherited his father's business. But it greatly irks him to see that everybody had a high opinion of his father except him. It went on to the point that I had to agree with Lachlan when he said:
Who was this man? Why couldn’t I let him go?

Yes, Lachlan. Why couldn't you let him go? But, it is revealed right at the very end the reasons that would've enabled him to let go much earlier. But there wouldn't have been much of a plot then. Sigh! Too little, too late.

As much as I love damsel-in-distress stories, there was this mini-rant about the 'Me Too' Generation which didn't sit well with me. I think the author got the terminology wrong. The following paragraph made my reading experience completely distasteful.
We went through the Netflix menu options, chose a movie we’d watched several times about some princess or another tastefully updated for the #Metoo generation, who didn’t need a man to fix everything, and yet still falls in love. I tended to think we overcompensated, but who was I to say. What was so wrong about needing people? Men needed us too, didn’t they? Not the one I once had, but if I went in with that kind of attitude, surely, I’d never get anywhere.

First of all, #MeToo is not a generation. It is a movement against sexual harassment and sexual abuse where people publicize allegations of sex crimes committed by powerful and/or prominent men. A simple Google search would tell you that. There is a big difference between needing people in our lives/ falling in love and staying quiet in the face of abuse by those same people. When the author could create a wonderful character in Lachlan, why did she feel the need to belittle what another woman may or may not want?

The story concludes one year later with again a dual perspective (which I loved). And Lachlan and Zooey's bond is something I cherish in this story, especially at the end.

Thank you to Candi Kane PR for an e-ARC of the book.

This was a good read. Scarlett and Lachlan take the same train. Both are into each other and finally go out together. Things were going great until something comes out. Thankfully in the end it all works out and they get their happy ending.

This was a very good read. Scarlett and Lachlan both had issues that caused problems for their relationship. That they met on a train and had insane chemistry was just the start of it. I loved how Lachlan loved Zoey. She was such a sweetie and when she called him Daddy, he just melted. The story had several twists and turns as they struggled to trust each other. When they put their demons to rest, everything worked out perfectly.

Scarlett and Lachlan are two people looking for a happily ever after, they just don't know it, while putting themselves on their own self-destruct courses of their own makings. The two of them are dealing with so many inner demons that they are lying to themselves and each other. Scarlett refuses to admit she is a single mom to Lachlan and he does not want to admit that he is ready to give up the partying single life and has hard feelings for his father who left him. They are so set on not letting the other see into their real lives, that they have fabricated some made-up world for themselves thinking that would find them happiness, if only they could see that the truth would bring them happiness, because they are their own worst enemies. If you want to find out what happens for Scarlett and Lachlan you will need to read this great page turning can't put down book!

This is the third book in the Flame Series and the best one yet. Scarlett is a single mother of a three-year-old daughter who takes the train to work. One day, she catches the eye of a sexy man, Lachlan, on the same train. The two are attracted to each other and after some time passes, Lachlan askes her out. The more time they spend together the stronger the bond grows. However, each one is keeping secrets from the other and they seem to be content to live in a fantasy. As the relationship grows, they realize that they each need to deal with their feelings and come clean in order to move on. Can Scarlett and Lachlan get past their issues and have their happily ever after? This is one storyline that brings out the warm feelings as these two characters grow together as the truth comes forward.

Enjoyed it immensely!
Not having read anything by this author before, I was more than pleasantly surprised. Scarlett and Lachlan were delightful characters that had both had disappointing relationships in the past and were somewhat damaged. They both ride the same train to work each morning and are attracted to each other. They are destined to meet when he realizes that she is the tenant he is getting ready to evict from the apartment below the one he is remodeling for himself. The story has its ups and downs as in “real” life. Delightful story and characters are brought to life by her talented writing. (I’m going to read the first two books in this series I enjoyed this one so much!)

"𝑰'𝒎 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔. 𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒃𝒊𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒔. 𝑻𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒊𝒕," — ‘𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒆𝒍𝒚 𝑯𝒐𝒕, 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒏 𝑵𝒐𝒕’, 𝑫𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒂 𝑩𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒔𝒌𝒚.

My first ever read by Daniella, and she takes it all.
I absolutely loved this entire novel. It had heat, secrets and a journey of discovery.
Scarlett and Lachlan, a single mom and an Australian businessman, were a meant to be.
The secrets, little lies and demons of their past held them back until they could no more.
There were hurdles in their path, but their intense chemistry and love was far superior than the hurdles that came their way.
Zooey was a delight to read about. She, personally, was the star of the book for me. Stole my heart with her purity.
The connection formed between the three of them is one that warms your soul.
Daniella Brodsky has written one heck of a novel and I can't wait to read the next in this series.

Scarlett is a single mom who's fantasizing about the handsome man on her train. Lachlan is equally enamored with the beautiful Scarlett. Fate has a funny way of working sometimes. There's secrets that their both keeping that could influence the fragile relationship they've started. I enjoyed most of this book, but felt that Lachlans inner dialogue a bit too much. Too much repeating and pondering. Although I understand the writer was trying to give his background info, it was just over the top, and very repetitive. If most of that had been left out, and he retained more mystery about his issues I would have given this book 4 stars.

I did really enjoy this book, I felt like a few of Scarlett’s decisions contradicted her character traits but other than that was a really great read. This is the first book I’ve read from this author and I’m definitely interesting in checking out some more of their work. I loved Lochlan and Scarlett’s relationship, they’re a passionate couple and finally get their HEA with Zooey. I’d love to see her Scarlett’s sister have her own book, she seems like such a great quirky character with a wild side. I read this book as an ARC.

OMG!!!!! This book is to die for! I could not get enough of Lachlan and Scarlett! I was hooked from the moment I started reading and could not put it down.

This book has everything you could possibly want in a story. The writing is fabulous, the characters are amazing, the story line draws you in and doesn't let you go. There is some drama, suspense and HOT HOT chemistry!

I was on the edge of my seat wondering how things were going to work out. I promise, this is a must read book for sure.

I loved the premise of this title. Loved it.

Unfortunately, the romance between Scarlett and Lachlan didn't live up to the attraction I felt to it in the blurb.

I ended up skimming the story and trying to pick it up in the middle, to see if it was more of an appealing story in the middle, but unfortunately, I wasn't able to be drawn into this story.

I am not able to recommend this title.

I loved this sweet, single mom romance. It’s very well written. The characters are great. And the story is phenomenal and so sweet. I couldn’t put it down without finding out how the story would end for Lanchlan, Scarlett and the adorable little Zooey. A couple of twist and turns and a totally unexpected connection between Scarlett and Lanchlan kept this story entertaining from the very beginning. An absolute must read for all romance lovers.

Lachlan and Scarlett have a love at first sight kind of romance. They met in a train and couldn't stop thinking about each other. When they finally talked to each other they could no longer deny their attraction to each other but they had a few secrets they needed to work out first. Lots of steamy and sappy romance between them with an adorable little girl and a billionaire worth falling for.

Loved it.

Insanely Hot, Then Not is my first read by Daniella Brodsky, and I really enjoyed the story, it’s the third in a series of standalones which I’m sure I will read as well.
Scarlett and Lachlan have traveled on the same train for almost a year. But, they’ve never spoken a word to each other. That all changed after Lachlan had been gone for a month and had spent most of his time away thinking about the gorgeous woman he’d ogled on the train.
When chance gives him the opportunity, he asks Scarlett out and they start an intense and voracious relationship.
It’s not all sunshine and rainbows though, Scarlett is a single mom and that comes with its own complications.
Lachlan has been let down in childhood and has fears and trust issues. But, the chemistry they share is undeniable and completely irresistible. Add in a precocious, funny, and adorable three-year-old and a wonderfully caring sister, and you have a great story.
These characters, although flawed, were human and real. I loved how they loved… eventually, lol. Grab your copy today.

The plot in the story was spot on!

I absolutely loved it! This was an absolutely amazing story. The plot in the story was spot on. There's so much drama, some humour and a lot of emotions mixed in with this romance. This is one storyline that brings out all the feelings as these two characters grow to get their HEA. I read it all in one sitting and seriously will be going back to read books 1 & 2! Happy reading everyone!!

Let me tell you a bit about Lachlan (Lachy), the Aussie Billionaire Alpha from Insanely Hot, Then Not.

He's:
🖤 Mourning the loss of a father who abandoned him as a child
🖤 Currently living said father's life, walking in his shoes (literally), trying to find a way to make sense of his newfound billionaire existence as the son and sole heir of this stranger, whom everyone reveres
🖤 Been having a ridiculously sexy stranger-on-a-train thing with a woman he cannot stop thinking about
🖤 Just back in San Fran from Sydney, and not going to let another morning go by without talking to that sexy, brown-eyed stranger

I ❤️ LACHY.

Have I convinced you to add Lachy's story to your TBR list yet? Let's have a moment of silence for this damaged, but definitely not effing broken--never broken --man with the jawline that won't quit.

Slow read

I was really rooting for this book but it was really slow. If you don't mind much narrative, description and inner dialogue, then you'll enjoy this book. But if you enjoy dialogue and fast spaced books, you may struggle with the book. It was pages and pages of narrative and few lines of dialogue.

I wanted to like Daniella Brodsky's "Insanely Hot, Then Not" more than I actually did. It wasn't a terrible book, but the insta-love between main characters Lachlan and Scarlett was a little too over-the-top for me. They were both likeable characters, but there was virtually no relationship development between them; they shared heated glances across a crowded train car for the better part of a year, then pined for each other because Lachlan had to take a trip to Australia so they didn't see each other for a month. They finally spoke for the first time on the day Lachlan returned, went on their first date that same night, and somehow were "in love" by the time they went on their second date a couple days later.

Lachlan's relationship with Scarlett's young daughter, Zooey, was cute, although that also developed at lightning speed. I had to laugh at his efforts to teach her to call Scarlett "Mum" instead of "Mommy." However, I did not appreciate that Scarlett lied to Lachlan and kept Zooey a secret for so long. She kept piling lies on top of lies and I knew that things were going to go badly wrong between them because of it, and there was no good reason for all the secrecy. Lachlan was keeping secrets of his own, which bothered me for different reasons. Bottom line, the two of them were not very open with each other for most of the book, and it really made me doubt their feelings for each other.

Unfortunately, I don't think I can recommend this book, but I would give Daniella Brodsky another chance in the future.

Scarlett meets Lachlan in person after many months of them sharing hot glances at each other during their morning commute. It’s clear they are attracted but each has secrets they are not ready to share with the other complicating what should be simple. What they don’t know is how their lives are connected already.

Ok, I really wanted to like this story. The synopsis was good so I thought let’s do this. I started reading and it seemed ok. It was descriptive, but that often adds to the storyline. However, as I read on, the description of feelings and character inner thinking was so intricate that I kept losing the flow of the story. It was so distracting that I considered not finishing the book.

I kept going because the story wasn’t bad at all, I just think it could have been more succinct.
Also Scarlett did a big no-no in my opinion so she lost major points with me early on.

If you have read other books in the series and like the style of writing, I recommend this to you.

Disclaimer I was giving an arc of this book for my honest review

This book wasn't bad but it also was at my favorite. I really felt like this book was rushed and I wanted more of their story to evolve versus being just thrown into something. I really wanted to know more of Scarlett's story. Scarlett is a single mother raising her daughter just basically trying to make it by and live her life. Lachlan is a billionaire with daddy issues basically, they make eye contact on a train after a few times they meet in their story happens it's very fast it's quick it just didn't give me everything that I wanted. And also I feel like there are certain things when it comes to discussing a woman and her wedding dress and how she looks and I felt like this description to me was very vulgar and I didn't really care for it

Scarlett and Lachlan both take the same train each day. When they finally act upon their mutual attraction, a connection begins to form. However, secrets between them threaten what they are starting to build.

This was a fun, quick read over a weekend. The characters and story didn't quite hit it out of the park for me, but I did enjoy the writing and want to check out the first two books in the series.

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.

This is the first Daniella Brodsky book I've read and I'm impressed.
Scarlett meets a stranger on a train every day and for a year they make small talk. Then Lachlan and Scarlett get together - they both have issues - skeletons in the closet so when Scarlett's little girl, Zoey calls Lachlan Daddy - well, things can change and priorities can be more easily defined.
An easy read and highly recommended

YES! I hate the miscommunication trope but I also can't stand the "oh I just will take everything at face value and won't question anything you say" trope so this book was PERFECT. Both MCs realized that the other had a reason to keep things a secret and didn't often hold it against them. When there was some anger, both characters came to their senses and talked it out. You don't see this perfect balance very often and it was super refreshing.
