Jack Haynes rings his wife's missing phone, but when he remembers seeing it downstairs earlier in the kitchen, he goes to hang up, only for it to be answered by strangers who've broken into the house.
The strangers are looking for something specific, something which involves his daughter, Lucy, who's witnessed a murder the night before in the woods.
But will they find something else - will they find Jack's biggest secret?
Jack finds a small, old leather box in the cupboard in the corner of Lucy's bedroom, containing something inside.
When he finally opens it, he uncovers secrets worse than he can ever begin to imagine.
Imagine taking some pictures of the sunset, carefree and happy with your ( half secret ) boyfriend and whilst doing so witness a brutal double murder and continue taking pictures, to then be seen by the killers..
Lucy will forever regret doing the above and this fast paced thriller is then focused on the chase to get back these pictures and the struggle to basically stay alive, involving her family is just the start of the problems
But the book is so much more than this story, it is layer on layer of other interwoven stories that all meet up and in some way affect everyone in the story, its busy, very busy and there are lots of angles to follow and lots of characters to keep up with, there really isn’t a second to be bored as each page is full of adventure and intrigue, it 100% kept me on my toes
It’s tense and exciting and literally anything could and does happen and I was surprised many times by ‘what went on’
The writing is reader friendly and the plots explained well, important when so much is happening
The last line was chilling, very chilling and VERY unexpected!
A fab debut book and read and I also enjoyed the heartfelt acknowledgements at the end which showed just what this book meant to the author to be published
Well... what a disappointment. This one definitely did not work for me. I’m rating it 3 stars for effort. It started well and I was quite pleased with the writing, especially with the narrative, but unfortunately the dialogues did not have the same quality of the narrative. The plot was so unbelievable. There were too many side stories, too much happening too fast. I wished the author was focused on just one side of the story or at least had given more thoughts about developing the story and characters. I’m sorry C.J. Grayson! I really tried. Perhaps your next book will be better. Yes... I will purchase a copy.
Good first novel, had lots of twists and turns I had to keep reading just to see how it would end. I would like to see more character development as I didn't really empathize with the characters but it was well written and not a bad plot even if was a little bit unbelievable. Possibly too many side stories, and too much happening too fast. I’m sorry Mr Grayson! I really tried. Perhaps your next book will be better. I have given 4 stars as for a debut novel it wasn't bad. I will definitely try another book by him.
When teenager Lucy Haynes witnesses and photographs a double murder, it sparks an horrific chain of events as her parents Jack and Joanne are dragged into an urban nightmare from local thug Alexander Hunt. In fairness this is a very short telling of the opening few chapters as the story expands, twists and turns leaving the reader wanting answers. Secrets from the past suddenly come back to haunt Jack and many of the chapters are told from his - often confused - viewpoint. It's a cracking thriller that hammers along at relentlessly fast pace and for a debut novel it's well worth a read. It is violent and not a cozy read at all but I'll certainly be searching out more from the author soon.
A great debut thriller packed with tension, secrets, lies and betrayals. This book continues at a fast pace throughout. The search for incriminating photos leads to terrifying events for the Haynes family. So much going on in this book but as the plot unfolds there are some surprises along the way.
I got into bed 3 hours ago thinking I'll just read a few more pages before I sleep. Famous last words. The first half of the book builds the characters, their stories and hints at some of what's to come. Someone's There goes from nought to 60 at about the halfway point and it cannot be put down! Loads of twists, so many twists! Some you can see coming, some you'll try (and fail) to guess but most come from nowhere and totally shock You! Multiple stories all intertwine to make a fantastic debut! Can't wait for more.
Wow. Talk about a dysfunctional family! I loved this book. So many twists and constantly kept me guessing, which is rare now days, for me anyhow. It’s the kind of book you don’t want to put down because you’re dying to know what comes next. I can’t wait for more from this author.
Good first novel, had plenty of twists and turns and the shock factor...and I had to keep reading just to see how it would end. I’d like to see a bit more character development so you really empathise with the characters but it was well written and cleverly plotted.
I’ll admit... the first few pages I didn’t enjoy, I wasn’t sure I liked the writing style and I worried that I wouldn’t enjoy the book as a whole! I was very wrong! It turned into a real page turner and despite the fact I think in some cases there was a little bit too much going on all at once I really enjoyed it and was surprised by the constant twists and turns! Brilliant book and I will be reading more from this author! Will be passing this book onto my friends/ family for them to read as I’m sure they’ll love it too!
The book was good, but the ending I never expected from the minute Elaine turned up for Hunt (which I did expect) everything after had me on the edge of my seat! Couldn’t put it down.
This book has got to be one of the best ones I’ve read recently. It’s a debut novel for the author and I think he has really set the bar high here. Jack Haynes finds he and his family are targeted by some not very nice people who want the photos that were taken on his daughters camera. The book has quite a few characters in it, some likeable, some not who all have their own secrets that are revealed as the book progresses, and play a part in the story. I really, REALLY enjoyed this book. It is written very well and I found it to be an absolute page turner. It held my attention from beginning to end and there were so many twists and surprises, most I would never have guessed !! The ending was a real shock. I will certainly be wanting to read future books by this author and highly recommend this one.
This was an excellent debut novel. It was extremely fast paced and kept you guessing throughout. I liked the idea of the book and enjoyed reading the snatches of rose put on Facebook. The book was different to what I expected but in a good way. There were lots of twists and turns and unexpected plot changes. I was sad not to have liked any of the characters. That would have made it five stars from me. If the next book takes time to make more rounded, likeable characters there will be no stopping the stars from falling.
Finished it last night, I found it a little difficult to get into the characters to start with but it was great to see how they all interacted and came together in the end. And I was not expecting the last page. Good read would recommend.
A book which keeps you guessing throughout, and keeps you on the edge of your seat as the suspense builds. A stunning debut thriller. Can't wait for the next one!
Once I got into this book Someone’s There I could not put it down I had to find out what happened. A bit unbelievable at times but I really enjoyed it. Cannot wait for the next one.
Jack Haynes; his wife, Joanne; and his teenage daughter, Lucy, ready themselves on a quiet morning to leave for a much anticipated vacation. Suddenly, Jack hears sounds coming from downstairs. Someone is in the house. There is more than one of them. They know the family is home, and they are coming for them. Footsteps trample the stairs as the unknown assailants make their way toward the family in a frightening home-invasion scene that is everyone’s worst nightmare. With the family is Lucy’s boyfriend, Carl. The four of them hide within the house. But why has Jack’s home been invaded? What do they want with Jack and his family? The answer soon becomes clear. Lucy is an expert photographer. She and Carl took pictures in the woods the night before and inadvertently captured the heinous mob murder of two brothers. However, Lucy and Carl were seen, and the mobsters tracked them back to Jack’s house. They want the pictures Lucy took, and they will kill to get them back.
“Someone’s There” is the debut novel by CJ Grayson. It is a fast-paced, frightening thrill ride from the first page to the last, and an outstanding accomplishment for a debut novel. The book is packed with twists and turns, making it literally impossible to put it down. Grayson’s writing is clear, concise, quick, and astounding, capable of making the reader’s heart pound page after page.
The invaders fail to find the hidden family, but Jack is dismayed by what they did find, his own dirty little secret—a safe full of money no one was supposed to find. Alexander Hunt is the ruthless, psychotic mobster hell bent on recovering the pictures. He now knows Jack’s secret and is blackmailing him, but he’s not the only one. Jack installs a top-notch security system, but black vans with watching eyes still stalk the house with intimating efforts. The cops cannot be trusted. Not only is Officer Johnson on Hunt’s payroll, but if Jack tells the whole story, he risks the revelation of his own secret.
The characters are genuine, intricate, and laced with secrets of their own. Jack’s brother Mark and his wife, Elaine, come to Jack’s rescue often. They are supporting characters with tales of their own. Throughout the book are buried pasts and secret identities that leave the reader guessing, protagonists who are cheered on and antagonists who infuriate. The book leaves the reader with a dark message that someone is always there, watching, no matter what you do.
“Someone’s There” is a heart-pounding thriller where worst nightmares are fully realized. It is a masterpiece debut work by CJ Grayson, who will surely become a hit, if not a best-seller.
This was an enjoyable read filled with action from beginning to end. There were almost too many twists thrown in (writers have to be careful not to overdo it in that aspect), but each one doubled back to an earlier scene/clue, and there were no unanswered questions. It was hard, however, to like any of the characters (beyond Lucy) as each had some pretty awful characteristics. This may have been a metaphor to show that everyone has a dark side, and the brutality through which each character suffered almost seemed deserved. And while I won't give it away, the ending was unexpected, but it was unfortunate to see the story taken in that direction. All in all, this book kept my interest from beginning to end, and that's always a good thing.
A very entertaining and exciting read. A fabulous debut novel. Ok, it was a little untidy, typos, grammer etc but they were trivial. No way was that going to stop me giving this book the 5* rating that it deserves. It is a fast paced edge of the seat story. What a great imagination Grayson has, I flew through the pages. It was hit upon hit of revelations throughout, taking me deeper into the darkest and shocking secrets of the Haynes family. Some parts came across a little bit over the top but hey did I care? No! It was too exciting and I was totally engrossed and enjoying the movie that was coming to life in my head. Brilliant! Although this is a debut novel I have read two books previous to this by Grayson. So good. Recommended.
Loved this thriller it kept me interested right to the very last page. Jack Heye's wife has a past which Jack does not know about but all will be revealed in this fantastic stand alone thriller.
Jack finds an old leather box which has hidden secrets inside it in his wife's wardrobe. Jack's daughter Lucy and her friend witness a murder whilst practicising photography in the woods which escalates a series of events which endangers all their lives. Jack also has a secret which is revealed and the consequences are dire. I am looking forward to reading more books by C J Grayson.
This is the fourth book I have read by C J Grayson. I have already enjoyed Never came home, No one's safe and That night.
I don't know how to rate this book, it's either great or horrible.
There is tension and intrigue and suspense on every page. But EVERYBODY is a dirtbag. There are despicable people, every single one of them without exception. I guess I was hoping that even just one of them could be redeemed. But no, they each fall deeper and deeper into depravity.
Why did I read the entire book? Well, why did I watch that video of the tsunami? Why can't people look away from a car wreck?
The author should sell "I Survived 'Someone's There'" t-shirts.
This book hits you from the first page, and being a debut novel it is fantastic. Nothing is as it seems with its pages, it is a master of 'subterfuge and evasion' The author leads you down these paths, and what is revealed at the end bears no reference to how and what you were expecting. This book is fantastic!!! A must read for anyone who loves crime and suspense... The author is up there with the greats!!! As for the end... well I was astounded to say the least. I highly recommend this book, and I can't stress that enough - buy it!!! You will not be disappointed. :)
