Each chapter highlights a different nation and how the revolution to “tear down the wall” of communism was not merely political but deeply inspired by Faith.

I took this book on a long road trip. I love to read true stories that show the triumph of dedicated Christians. This chronicle of the liberation of several Eastern European countries did not disappoint.

Focusing on key players in five Soviet satellites, this book shows step-by-step how committed Christians brought about social and political transformation in East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and Romania. What we saw and heard on international news outlets was nothing like what went on behind the scenes. Read how conscientious individuals awakened to the need for change, how they peacefully worked to bring it about, and what it cost them to see their dreams realized.

The author, CNN journalist Bud Bultman, masterfully incorporates information from news sources, other historical/biographical books, personal interviews and journal entries to weave an engaging story. Although laid out in a diary-like format, with dates and descriptions of events that took place in each country, the book is not at all dry or boring. You see history unfold through the eyes of those engaged in the epic struggles of little people against political powerhouses. You thrill right along with the men and women, as you watch their totalitarian regimes buckle and then fall in face of unified, but mostly peaceful protests.

Are you passionate about bringing about change in your own government? This book will give you the courage and a model of how to go about it in a Christ-like, God-honoring way. Even if you are not an activist at heart, these stories of faith, courage and self-sacrifice from our not-so-distant past will bolster your hope for the future.

I can't believe it's been 20yrs already! I remember these events so clearly, yet with the passage of time, it all seems so unreal. I like the way Bud Bultman wrote about the people who were involved in this great drama. Their stories are so unbelievable, even thought I lived through the truth of that time. Freedom isn't free.
