Miss #1

Miss Understanding

Rate this book
Liam Davenport is the most infuriating man I’ve ever known – and he’s my boss.
Worse, he’s undeniably sexy. At least until I’m subject to one of his trademark sighs of disapproval. I’m counting the days until I can walk away from this job. But first, I need to survive the trip from hell he’s dragged me on. One entire week with his arrogant smile and my unexpected naughty thoughts.

I might get fired.

He just might be worth it.

Kendall Tate is the most distracting woman I’ve ever met – and she’s my assistant.
She’s irritatingly clever, and much too nice for the likes of me. I need to remain professional, even if the smell of her strawberry lip gloss is my kryptonite. No matter how much I want her, Kendall is off limits.

Growing closer to her might be a mistake.

I might just take the risk.

4 Stupid Girl Stars ⭐

I’d be lucky if I didn’t murder my boss by the end of the week. Then again, I looked terrible in orange and was certain I wouldn’t like prison. Such a shame.

Miss Understanding was the perfect afternoon read. An office romance involving a bastard boss, the ridiculously accommodating assistant and many wrong impressions, I seriously inhaled this book.

Kendall Tate is the assistant to a boss that barely acknowledges her, nor her work. She has spent the last four months wanting to quit. Since that’s not a possibility, she passes her time dreaming about the little things that could possibly happen to Liam, the twat.. She doesn’t necessarily want to harm him, but would a voodoo doll be too much? Where she thought Monday to Friday was insufferable, she almost hyperventilated when she had to attend an emergency business trip with him.

If I ever wondered if I could be attracted to my boss, he only needed to open his mouth to assure me that would never happen.

Liam Davenport is in self-preservation mode. Perceived as arrogant and unappreciative, he has his reasons. Professionalism is king. He has worked extremely hard for his position at the law firm and has no time for distractions. Yet somehow Ms Tate has managed to worm herself under his skin even though he’s gone to extraordinary lengths to avoid that. However, Liam is completely misunderstood. Because once you take the time to peel back the armour, you will find a man irrevocably damaged. He is the master of self-sabotage and almost incapable of happiness…

I wasn’t enough, therefore I constantly push myself to do more.

Kendall never imagined that she could possibly be attracted to the likes of Liam. But watching their working relationship begin to simmer, was humorous in parts, sweet, sexy and heartbreaking. Who ever thought that non-relationships could work are idiots. Because nothing is worth compromising your self-worth over. It was beautiful watching Liam finally acknowledge what he rightfully deserved and what he could have with Kendall, once it slapped him in the face.

But I’ve come to realize sometimes the best things to ever happen are those you don’t plan. Like falling in love with you.”

…meets Mr Oblivious

How frustrating would it be if the beautiful man in front of you was an absolute DOUCHEWAFFLE? I’m not talking egotistical jerk or even an arrogant manwhore type of douchewaffle... this douchewaffle is Mr Oblivious. Sure, he notices some things in his peripheral but generally, he’s absolutely oblivious to everything outside of work. Mr Oblivious is also Mr Workaholic. The beautiful man has no social life, forgets to use his manners and has very high standards when it comes to his work. You could even say his standards are a wee bit unrealistic. Luckily, he has a very understanding person working for him, but little does he know, she’s wishing cold sores and gastro on him daily.

Poor Miss Understanding…AKA… Kendall, is Mr Oblivious…AKA… Liam Davenport’s personal legal secretary. Kendall needs this job to help support her family while she also continues her studies in business. It is not her lifelong ambition to stay a legal secretary and if she had her wish, Kendall would be pursuing a career in cooking. Miss Understanding may not hold her position for much longer though because she’s about to spend a week away with Mr Davenport. If he doesn’t stop being a douchewaffle, Kendall might end up in the clanger for murder by the end of the week. How can someone so beautiful to look at be such a jerk?

Liam Davenport knows he is a bit of a douchewaffle and cares too much about work, but he has finally realised that he’s been oblivious as well. After the first day travelling with Kendall, he has realised that the barrier he put up between himself and his sexy secretary has made him look like a jerk. She is a temptation he can’t afford to succumb to if he wants the partnership at the legal firm they work at. His determination to get his name on the door at work means he doesn’t have time for a relationship, but the forced living arrangements are making him reassess his priorities.

Miss Understanding follows a tried and true path in romance. From storylines including enemies to lovers, boss falling for his secretary and relationship scaredy-cat to loving family, we’ve seen them before but keep coming back for more. Aubrey Bondurant does not disappoint and brings us a story about love, forgiveness and sacrifice.

The journey for Liam and Kendall is not an easy one and along the way we see both characters grow their confidence. For Liam, he has finally come to terms with his past and realised his value. For Kendall, she wants to finally follow her dreams and realises she should accept nothing but the best for herself.

I found Miss Understanding very easy to read and I was desperate to return to when I had to stop because of life…stuff. We are treated to dual points of view, so we get an inside view of why Liam does the things he does. The story flows well and the intimate scenes show the characters connection without it being OTT. I believed that Liam and Kendall were right for each other and were destined to a happy ever after.

If you’re a fan of Aubrey Bondurant, you will not be disappointed. Miss Understanding is the first in the Miss series, and I will definitely be back for more.

Here are the things that made me rate this book low:

1. For a 336-page book, it was uneventful and dragging. A romance between the boss and his assistant could always be done in 200-250 pages and this one didn’t have anything unique to necessitate that length; therefore, its length makes it a bit boring and dragging.

*********************************************

2. I expected a bit more humor and a better banter but couldn’t find it. It was not enough fun at all.

*********************************************

3. Although it was a bit emotional, it wasn’t hot enough for such a book. You know we expect a hot book when it is called an office romance, right? Nope, not hot at all. All the intimate scenes were cut short and written without enough passion. I didn't feel their sexual chemistry.

*********************************************

4. In the book, there are many times when the heroine feels a second best to his career (not another woman but his job in this case😊). At first, he ignores her for 4 months, being all cold and indifferent to her. Then when he feels attracted to her, he insists he doesn’t want a relationship and it can only be sex. What bothered me most is that he says no one should know or else, he may not be offered the partnership at all so they keep their affair hidden. He also says he doesn’t want a family. At first, she says yes to anything he is willing to give her but later she wants more, of course.

The hero puts his job and his dreams of an advance in his career before anyone or anything else and it doesn’t change till towards the end of the book. Even on page 285, he still thinks becoming a named partner in the firm he works is the thing he wants most in his life and when they say he won't have a personal life, he is fine with it. He thinks of our heroine for a moment and then quickly dismisses that thought and thinks being a named partner is everything he wants.

His feelings for the heroine outweigh only towards the very end of the book. Yes, in the end, he sees he needs her more than he needs to rise in his career but it was a little too late for me.

*********************************************

5. The heroine is too good to be true. Really "Miss Understanding"... She deserves the name. It sometimes bothered me that she apologized to him whereas he was the one who neeeded to apologize. She is tender, caring, affectionate, hardworking, understanding and forgiving... Really too good to be true...

*********************************************

6. I hate “unplanned pregnancy trope”. That was the final nail in the coffin!

I really really hate it when writers make the heroine pregnant when the couple is at the beginning of a relationship, not having sorted out their problems yet or not having decided they are in it for the long term yet.

Why would they make her pregnant and make them a family when they haven’t enjoyed their couple time yet? And in this case, in this book, the man is not even sure he wants a long-term relationship; why would the writer test him with a child??!

Any book that has “unplanned pregnancy” in it will get a low grade from me because I want my couple in my romance book to be a couple, enjoying each other for a while, preferably for a few years. In the Epilogue, I am happy to see them as a family but before the epilogue, any unplanned pregnancy when they are a couple for only a few weeks or a few months gets on my nerves and the book completely loses me there.

*********************************************

7. I loved the TV show "Little House on the Prairie" but I was 10 years old when I watched it for f*** sake, how would I know/remember all the references to that show?

Using such references in a book is kinda dangerous territory as there may be readers who have never seen it or who can't remember it.

*********************************************

P.S. The book is written in dual point of view and there is no cheating, it is safe.

Whenever someone annoys me now, I’m just going to start a list of ways for them to suffer in a not too violent or long term way. I really liked the slow burn in this and I liked both MCs. Kendall was very sweet and soft spoken but that didn’t mean she was a doormat when it mattered. Liam was an asshole but he had his reasons and wasn’t intentionally cruel just for fun.

It was a good workplace romance and there was more to it than just the taboo aspect of it. The part when they when to his hometown for the week was the best party of the book. It was just as fun when they got back but I kind of wanted more angst.

For someone who prioritized his work over everything, I was expecting big moments he’s miss out on or forget because of it. But it was just that they wouldn’t have a lot of time together which was established from the beginning and never really seemed like an issue. I think that’s why the ending was a let down for me because there were smaller issues building up and since we didn’t get much throughout the book, I was expecting more in the end. It also just didn’t feel as genuine as I would have liked. It felt more like he was backed into a corner and it would have been better if he came to some realizations before everything.

This doesn’t mean I didn’t like the book, I really did but it just wasn’t what I was expecting out of it. I’m looking forward to reading the next one.

Kendall Tate, 24, is a legal secretary with a hot-cold boss. As in he has a cold demeanor, but he’s hot to look at. Liam Davenport, 32, is determined to keep his assistant at a distance. As a workaholic, he doesn’t want anything getting in his way—like a relationship.

“Cinderella had her dress. Now I just wondered if my Prince Charming would be a dick at the ball.”

Liam starts out pretty cold and abrupt, but he grows as the story progresses (with his family background being explored/revealed) and learns to be more cordial and less rigid. Kendall certainly brings out the best in him. I came to really like Liam as a solid responsible guy who wasn’t a player or a creep and who displayed integrity with his work ethics and standards.

Kendall handled him well so kudos for the presentation of a capable heroine who wasn’t weak or wishy-washy. Kendall was articulate and hard-working with goals for a career that better fit her passions.

While their professional relationship takes a turn for the personal during an unexpected trip, it never felt rushed or insta-love. Both the characters and the romance are well developed.
“Mr. Robot, Mr. Icy, Mr. I-had-like-fifty-ways-I’d-like-to-see-him-suffer only a week ago was a master at eating pussy.”

Told via Kendall and Liam’s alternating first person POV, the story largely stays focused on the internal struggles both between them and within Liam as he learns to deal with his internal battles.

I do wish some of the sex scenes would have been better detailed (a few were glossed over), and I would have liked to see Liam’s “scandal” play out. But all in all it was an enjoyable, relaxing read.

Spoilers ahead

Kendall has only been Liam's assistant for a short time but she's dreamt up many inventive methods of torture for her boss. He's rude, unappreciative and a jerk all the time.

Liam is a workaholic, a successful lawyer determined to make partner at his law firm. With his attraction to Kendall he keeps things strictly professional by keeping her at arms length. While in the middle of a big case his mom calls with the shocking news that his estranged father had died. As Liam returns to his hometown he insists Kendall accompany him so they can work during his time away. But keeping the line between personal and professional from blirring becomes impossible as they stay in a house to together. Before long feelings develop and Liam finds himself distracted for the first time in his career....attaining his dreams means focussing on work with no other commitments but fate has a way of putting things into perspective

********
1) Ok I enjoyed the initial parts of thus when Kendall dislike him. Her POV during that time gave me the impression of a strong, confident woman who wouldn't put up with any crap......until they actually got involved and she turned into miss understanding.....she understood why he was an ass sometimes, she understood his lack of trust, she understood that he treated her like a booty call, she understood his career was the most important, she understood he didn't want a relationship...... This girl needed to be less understanding and kick his dumb ass to the curb, she apologized a lot of times when he was the one who needed to do so. She started off really well and crumpled like wet tissues

2) There was a serious lack of chemistry between the mcs, I read the sexy times with one eye closed they were just so awkward. This from a reader who very, very rarely reads books without sex!

3) Liam did a LOT of pushing away, I mean a LOT.....until maybe about 80-85% of the book he kept insisting he couldn't have a relationship. I get it, he had daddy issues but I can't root for a HEA for a couple when I spent more than half the book with the H not wanting a relationship! And there were many times he was such an unnecessary jerk to her and then he'd apologize and eventually he'd say some crap again and apologize again......I just did not like this guyl

4) unexpected pregnancy, usually something I enjoy but the asshole's reaction spoiled it for me

5) This book felt wayyyyyy too long as the entire plot was the H and his issues and him running from a relationship

On the positive side it's finally over 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Kidding
I liked the beginning, the h (at the beginning) and the ending.....it's the parts in the middle that caused me some problems 😂😂😂😂

No cheating(always a positive)
OW drama from a high school girlfriend and then from a coworker but he definitely wasn't interested though I felt he could've been firmer with the woman about his lack of interest
Tons of pushing away
Not really OM drama
H wasn't QUITE a manwhore but he mentioned he hooked up sometimes with women but it'd been a while and there were a couple of the dreaded comparisons which I detest "I'd had women before but......" I hate that nonsense
h had 2 previous boyfriends

At this time I have read this book twice.... and both times it had me feeling it all! This is kind of an enemies-to-lovers story, but really that is only because Liam is trying his hardest to make Kendall hate him so that there is no temptation! He is a jerk of the century boss. The kind that no one would want to work for. But then when they finally get together...... H-O-T! This book had me laughing.... I there was no major ugly cry involved this time.... but there were some tears in my eyes (both times I have read it!!!) And there were sometime I just wanted to shake Liam.... but most of the time he was totally making me swoon! I can not recommend this book enough... ESPECIALLY if you are a fan of office romances! This couple is one that you will be rooting for the whole way through......

And you also meet a great cast of characters that I can not wait to get their stories! Especially the doctor!!!

*Updated*
I just listened to the audio of this book! It is PHENOMENAL!!! Ariel Royce & Christopher Rourke are the PERFECT Kendall and Liam! They nailed these characters to a T. LOVED IT! I absolutely can not WAIT for more from this series to be released on audio also!

What a great start to a new series! When I heard that Aubrey Bondurant was coming out with a new series, with the first being enemies-to-lovers/office romance (two of my favorites!), I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. As with all of Aubrey's books, the story sucked me in and I had a really hard time putting my kindle down. Liam is an attorney who has his mind set on making partner at his firm and lets just say, isn't so nice to his assistant, Kendell. Kendell was making do with the situation she was put in being his assistant. Her passion wasn't law but laid elsewhere. I did chuckle a few times...I mean who hasn't at some point wished a little discomfort on their boss when they aren't being so nice?

I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series. I have an idea of who it may (or who I want it) to be about.

Good start.
Boss from hell and his snarky assistant.
It was funny how they bantered. Beginning was interesting.
After sometime things got lull.

I felt that the behavior of the MCs were little ott especially the h. Like how her professional behavior suddenly turned into attitude and snarkiness. How she called him dick.
Her attitude with the H was like she was working with a problem child. She ignored his insults and would again be cool with it, like it doesn’t matter. Her making him stay in a house rather than a hotel or motel when they were outstation. And then making him home cooked meal in spite of knowing how highhanded he is. This all made it feel like she doesn’t take the H seriously. And also it seemed like she is too overconfident.

Maybe it’s just me that thinks this way.

5 SMOOCHES!

I’m a huge fan of the super talented Aubrey Bondurant, and I’ve read everything she has written. She gets better with each book, which is truly saying something since every book has been fantastic. Her writing style is best described as adult contemporary erotic romantic comedy—smutty chick-lit—but whatever anyone calls it, make no mistake, readers will be treated to an engaging, smart and witty story. She writes the kind of romances that just pull the reader right in with a sexy love story, endearing characters and charming details. If Aubrey Bondurant’s name is not already on your TBR, it needs to be. She is a not-to-be-missed indie author that every contemporary romance fan needs to experience.

Miss Understanding kicks off Bondurant’s newest series, the Miss series, and I’m officially hooked. A workplace romance—one of my favorite tropes from Bondurant because she just does them so well—was an emotional, hard fought love story. Liam Davenport, a controlling, demanding and often condescending attorney who is also frustratingly hot, fights his attraction to his assistant by basically ignoring her or being rude. He’s all business all the time, solely focused on his career aspirations, and his demeanor seems to be set to brusque and cold. Kendall Tate is one hardworking young woman. Holding down a very challenging position as Liam’s legal secretary, Kendall is pursuing a business degree at night and working a second job on the weekends to help her family out. Being Liam Davenport’s assistant is not her dream job by any stretch of the imagination, and she’s practically counting down the days until she can leave.

An unanticipated set of circumstances puts Liam and Kendall in close quarters, and he is forced to tamp down the attitude, and in doing so, he actually gets to know Kendall. White hot chemistry and a pull neither had ever experienced has them to crossing lines, and as Kendall gets to know Liam, she sees beyond his grumpy personality to the man beneath.

Miss Understanding was full of genuine heart-tugging emotion, and this well written, richly developed story grabbed my attention from the first page. While Liam wasn’t always easy to root for, I found myself doing exactly that in the end. An absolutely addicting story, I devoured this book, and I’m anxiously awaiting the next book in the series. Five smooches from me for Miss Understanding by Aubrey Bondurant!

Loved Liam & Kendall!!

I absolutely loved this! Enemies to lovers is one of favorite tropes, and then add office romance into the mix? Yes, please!!

Kendall is the perfect heroine. She’s strong and confident and sassy and knows how to hold her own...and surprisingly hold her tongue, when really, she’d love nothing more than to tell Mr. Sexy Pants boss man where to shove it.

Liam...so grumpy, so uptight, so...bossy. And anti-relationship and cold and sometimes rude and seemingly heartless.

I was immediately drawn to both of them. Even more so when sparks started flying and the sexual tension started getting thicker when they went away for a week. I could feel everything.

Watching their boss/assistant relationship grow into more was highly entertaining, super sexy, and it was more than satisfying. This story has humor, charm, and toe-curling goodness that had me never wanting to put it down.

This is the first book in the series.
Can not wait for book 2!

Miss Understanding is a hot, fun, sexy office read! Kendall and Liam drew me in right from the start, I read this book in one sitting! The writing was strong and I like the character development and depth of their history. For me the actual story line/plot was familiar and a little predictable. It did not take away from the writing or my love for these characters!!

Wow watching Aubrey learn her craft and get better with each book leaves me feeling like a proud mum. This is her best book to date. it is amazingly written and I simply could not put it down. Liam is a cold and infuriating boss but is he as unfeeling as he appears?. Kendall is pretty kickass and his legal secretary. I loved the banter between these two the writing was just superb. The emotions were delicately written but packed a punch. The sexy time is off the charts but also written in a way that isnt too graphic but a serious turn on. I really really loved it. 😍

MISS UNDERSTANDING is an example of the kind of romance books I love to read. There’s a credible storyline, the plotting and pacing is spot on, there’s humour peppered throughout, I like the main characters and I think they make a great couple.

Liam Davenport and Kendall Tate are both strong and hard-working individuals. Their underlying vulnerabilities made for complex characters that I was interested in reading about. They often butt heads, making for some very funny scenes, but what I loved about them is that the lines of communication were always open. Yes, there were misunderstandings and hurt feelings but they both actively worked through these times to come to a place of understanding. It’s refreshing to read a romance where the couple act like rational and reasonable adults.

I highly recommend this book and will be eagerly waiting for the next book in this series.

*First time reading author

Miss Understanding starts out as a funny cute story that turns into an interesting, romantic and seriously romantic story. Aubrey brings a real story to life and takes you on the journey of discovery between these two characters that are boss and assistant.

Liam and Kendall are not a normal love couple. These two do not get along at all, Kendall absolutely hates him and Liam tries everything he can to stop his attraction towards Kendall. But when Liam's father dies and he has to take time away from work he makes Kendall go with him. Close quarters make for interesting conversations.

This was a well written book about office romance. It was just. Little boring from my perspective. The main conflict being his level of work priority and her need to be in a relationship. She wanted to not be all demanding but was anyway. The hero at least had some growth in the book having learned that his priorities were determined because of his childhood of never being good enough.

The constant reference to little house on the prairie was weird I barely remember the show. I know it’s relating to the nan character but maybe they could have been addicted to game shows! The heroine could be accused of being a workaholic too only she had to he wanted to.

He needed the mature relationship advice from his sister to make relevant changes it was worthwhile reading that insight but it was still a slow moving book.🙃

5 star Review Miss Understanding (Miss Series #1) by Aubrey Bondurant

Aubrey Bondurant is a relatively new author to me I am so glad I found her. This is the first book in her new series and if this one is anything to go by, she is off to a flying start.

Liam Davenport frustrated me so much at times with his jerk like behaviour. He is arrogant and totally in control, until Kendall Tate barrels in to his life. He is determined to ignore the attraction that sizzles between him and his assistant and yet despite himself he finds it increasingly difficult.

I really loved Kendall, she is such an amazing character that I found I could relate to with ease, whilst Liam grew on me and was certainly swoon worthy.

The chemistry between Liam and Kendall is intense, whilst their banter is humorous. I really was cheering for these two to get their happily ever after. If only Kendall can get beyond the surface to the real Liam.

Miss Understanding was one heck of a read. There were moments of humour that brought a smile to my face and yet there was some drama sprinkled throughout the story which made the story feel realistic.

This is a well written, heart warming love story which was had me captivated from the first to the last chapter.

First I want to say I am a big fan of this author and was super excited to get my hands on this gem. And Ms. Bondurant did not disappoint with Liam and Kendall. I could not put this book down once I started it. I just loved how their story unfolded and the flow in which it was written. I totally fell head over heels for Liam even when he was being a jacka$$. I was still rooting for these two. I honestly can say I will be rereading this one again. Definitely recommend. Can't wait to see what is next!!

This is the first book I've read by this author, but I enjoyed it. Liam comes across as the biggest jerk to walk the planet at the beginning, but I quickly warmed up to him. I liked the Liam we got to know in the end. Liam and Kendall together were a force to be reckoned with.
The only thing that stopped me giving a solid five stars was a few plot inconsistencies in the book. All in all, it was a pleasant read. If you like contemporary romance then this is a book for you

Miss Understanding is the first book in a new series by Aubrey Bondurant. The Miss series.

Miss Understanding is about Kendall who works for the most infuriating man she has ever known. Liam Davenport is also very sexy. Kendall can't wait until she can quit, but first she has to spent a week on a trip with him.

This book was well written. I really liked the story and the characters. Liam and Kendall belong together. Can't wait for the next book.

Their chemistry was undeniable, their banter hilarious, and once they succumbed to their desires - it was passionate, desperate and fiery.

I really didn't like Liam in the beginning. He was cold, calculated and definitely in the "bosshole" category.

Kendall, on the other hand was caring, considerate and very 'understanding'.
Seeing the change happening- not only in their relationship- but also in Liam, was fascinating.
I didn't want to put it down!

I am super excited to read more in this series. This book was playful, sexy, packed full of drama and tension, and had some great surprises along the way.

If you are looking for a book to get you out of a book slump look no further! When I started this book I had a lot going on in my life. I wanted a book to give me an escape. This book did that plus a whole lot more. I have been an avid reader of Aubrey's for sometime. I have to tell you I might have a new favorite book. Kendall's heart is so big and putting others before herself. Liam coming across as a jerk when in fact he is just a little broken. The back and forth between these two along with the visuals Aubrey gives you makes it like you are not just reading it, but could easily be watching this as well. I love the classiness of Kendall and Liam's new level of hotness and jerk ways.
The best part of this is I am so excited that this book opened up characters that will hopefully get to read down the road and still see glance of Kendall and Liam!
