BUT, he seems to have gained the ability to see & hear ghosts. He wants life to go back to the way it was before the accident-he was happy, popular, an athlete, & not struggling w/loss. Bones in the Wall
(Ghost Hunters #1)
by Susan McCauley
This is a middle grade fantasy/paranormal book that adults will enjoy reading. No teen angst, no childish behavior either. This is a great story with heartfelt emotions, friendships, discovery of yourself after loss, making new connections, and then there is the ghost thing😉! After a terrifying accident, Alex is able to see and hear the dead. This isn't a world like we know it, spiritualist opened something they shouldn't have and in 1900, ghos

*Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.*

This was so much fun. Spooky but not too spooky. I didn't walk into it expecting it to be urban fantasy, so that was a nice surprise. If you're wondering what the world set-up was like, think The Screaming Staircase but modern. And I loved that. A very unique and fun twist on a regular old ghost tale.

The characters, especially the protagonist, were likeable and compelling. And the dynamics betw

Ghost Hunters: Bones in the Wall is a middle grade (aimed at roughly ages 10-14) novel. The story features a sort of alternate reality in which the spiritualists of world caused “The Great Unleashing” in the year 1900. Since then, ghosts have overrun the world. Children are tattooed with protective symbols at young ages, and parents worry over whether their kids will show psychic abilities (seen as bad, very bad) before their obligatory testing at age ten. School includes classes like Occult His ...more

I loved Susan's book The Devil Tree so I couldn't wait to start reading this one. Ghost Hunters - Bones in the wall is young adult horror that is at times scary due to the spirits that twelve-year-old Alex begins to see following a car accident that kills him mother and leaves him unable to play sports again.

There is a lot in this version of our world that has happened, spirits have been released and the untouched (people who can't see spirits) blame the Psychics for the state of things, everyon

This book imagines an alternate reality in which ghosts were released into the world in a cataclysmic accident back in 1900. Because of this, people regularly ward themselves against ghosts, which are a normal, if unpleasant, fact of life. Some people are spiritualists who can detect supernatural activity in various ways, but these people are looked at suspiciously or with downright hostility because they were the ones who caused the ghosts to be released in the first place (even though it was h ...more

I received this book as part of an ARC review. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to more in this series. The world in the book seems based on the psychic craze in the early 1900's and the ghosts over running things. People adapted and use protections of sigils and amulets. Despite the knowledge that psychics caused The Problem, the untouched rely on them. The three classes of psychics with A being the highest work overtime to move spirits on. Unfortunately psychics are too few to deal ...more

It's been a busy week, so I almost completely forgot about reading Ghost Hunters: Bones in the Wall until yesterday. I spent the majority of my morning reading this book while sipping on a cup of coffee.

Like most books I've been reading lately, I didn't read the blurb. I only signed up to review the book based on its cover, which I thought the plot was going to be an adult horror story. However upon reading, I quickly learned this a middle school story. (FYI: I do like reading kids' books!)

To be honest this was my first horror read and I absolutely loved it. And now I'm eager to read more of her works.

The story revolves around Alex, a 12 year old who lived in the a city where living among ghosts was a normal thing. He was a champion in playing ghostball for his school team until he had a car accident, which changed his life forever. After the accident he suffered severe hip injuries but gained a rare power of seeing & hearing ghosts. Not believing in his new ability , he tried to

On his way to the championship game, Alex and his mother are in a terrible car accident, and he is severely injured. When he wakes up in the hospital, his mother is there holding his hand. They talk briefly, then she gives him her amulet and leaves the room. But later, his father tearfully explains that his mother was killed in the accident. Alex first dismisses it as a dream or delirium from the accident, but then later at home he sees a kindly ghost named Mrs. Wilson, and then the ghost of a f ...more

Received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A middle school story that's like an alternate universe similar to our own except ghosts, spirits, and the Unknown run rampant after an accident years earlier. Alex is an average kid until the fateful car accident that leaves him with psychic abilities, which is supposed to be *rare* in the first place!

I really devoured this in one sitting...it's really entertaining and I love the alternate universe concept. Imagine having to take

Thank you to NetGalley and author Susan McCauley for the ebook copy to read and review.

I really loved the concept of this book, that everyone was living in a world where ghosts are present constantly but only a few see them and that they have to use protective sigils around them so the spirits cannot get to them. It was so original and so innovative.

For me personally I didn’t care for the protagonist he really annoyed me, however I really liked what he could do I liked the speed he learnt it a

Alex was a typical middle-schooler until an accident binds him to a wheelchair. When he woke up in the hospital with a mangled leg, he discovers that he could see ghosts. And the first one he saw was his mom, who died in the car crash that broke him.

Though it started off with a human touch, I thought this story was sort of weird. Like Harry Potter going to wizardry school, Alex went to a psychic school, except he wasn’t a psychic (I guess, now he was.) He had classed in Occult History and played

I received an advance reader copy of this book through Net Galley from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

When sixth-grader Alex breaks his hip and loses his mother in an auto accident, he gains psychic abilities. In a world a lot like ours where ghosts and malevolent spirits threaten the peace on regular basis, but are often kept at bay by the frequent use of mystical wards and sigils. When the wards and sigils don’t work, the psychics get called in.

Alex is hesitant to acknowledge h

I thoroughly enjoyed Bones in the Wall and am eagerly awaiting the next in the series! Alex is a kid who has gone through an unbelievably hard moment in his life, and is struggling with his 'new norm.' Only his new norm happens to be seeing, hearing, and feeling ghosts!

This story was everything I wanted it to be. Supernatural sleuth? Check. Coming of Age story? Check. Spooky moments followed by humor? Check. Fantabulous writing? Double check!

Ghost Hunters Pirates Curse was a great middle-grade YA book about a teen psychic and his latest job involving a pirates curse. I thought the story was really solid. I enjoyed the psychic stuff and loved hearing about the different sigils and charms involved in the business. The characters were well-written and the setting was perfect. New Orleans during a hurricane is a great setting for a spooky pirates tale. I look forward to reading more by this author.

Ghost Hunters: Bones in the wall, follows the story of 12 year old Alex, who was involved in a terrible accident that cost him his future career in sports. After waking up, however, Alex starts to notice that he has gained the ability to talk to ghosts!
