    CLARA'S WAY deftly makes historical facts come alive when paired with the fictional character of Clara Tyler. When Clara travels to the Panama Canal Zone to help nurse her ill brother, she is met with personal tragedy and hardships. Carr does an excellent job of describing the price of human suffering that helped build the Panama Canal while weaving in Claras own internal struggles with her new-found independence. ...more

    Claras Way is an historical fiction story set around the building of the Panama canal.

    Claras brother works in Panama and the book opens with a letter admitting that he too ill to travel home alone. Clara is trained as a nurse, so she journeys from their small town in Ohio to rescue him.

    She discovers appalling conditions, with mosquitos spreading malaria and yellow fever. Many of the workers live in squalor; fresh food is expensive and scarce, while the hospitals struggle to cope. Sadly, Claras

    This is an interesting book about the Panama Canal. Clara is a young nurse from Ohio who makes the journey to the Panama Canal in 1904 when her brother Samuel get sick. He sends for her & she courageously makes the journey alone to find her brother at deaths door. She decides to stay in Panama & work at the hospital there where most are sick with yellow fever & malaria.
