Robert Joseph Randisi was a prolific American author, editor, and screenwriter, best known for his work in detective and Western fiction. He wrote over 650 books, including The Gunsmith series under the pen name J.R. Roberts, and edited more than 30 anthologies. A co-founder of Mystery Scene magazine, the American Crime Writers League, and Western Fictioneers, he also established The Private Eye Writers of America and created the Shamus Award. Randisi collaborated on novels with Eileen Davidson and Vince Van Patten, and created memorable characters such as Miles Jacoby, Joe Keough, and The Rat Pack. He received multiple lifetime achievement awards and the John Seigenthaler Humanitarian Award.
This is a good, solid, entertaining collection of original private-eye stories. A glance down the table of contents will tell you which ones are sure to be really good: Lawrence Block, Bill Pronzini, and Marcia Muller rarely fail. Max Allan Collins, Loren D. Estleman, and Julie Smith are also sure to provide good stories. I can't tell you why, but the Jeremiah Healy story, "Someone to Turn Out the Lights," is particularly satisfying. The other stories from less well-known writers are, as one might expect, a bit less skillful, but are all worth your time to read. If you like private investigators, which I most emphatically do, this is a good book to read.
The title is "Justice for Hire" and it is a good collection of Private Eye short stories. Spotted on a library shelf while looking for something else. Well worth your time.
